Hey Mr. Edholm, Just wanted to say that I have enjoyed your videos for a while now and I have admired your work. You remind me of a current age Albert Etter. Your work is excellent and needed. I wish the best of luck for you, your plans and future goals to further yourself and the new apple varieties you’ve worked so enduringly to manifest and produce. And to hopefully share with the world someday. I can hardly wait, and I know I’m not the only one! You’ve inspired me start my own orchard and baby step grafting and pruning. And I look forward to enjoying some of your varieties and helping you along the way in the future. Keep up the good work!

Great to see Rox Russet getting high marks on the west coast. I can't find any information in the usual places on that apple you called Saorit. Seems very intriguing for my collection, I don't have many late hanging apples. Everything has already fallen off. So cool to see that many varieties in one place.

I thought I had seen pics of it, but maybe just the ones chris sent me. I will probably have a handful of scions this winter. It really lacks character, flavor, even sugar, but very interesting texture and keeping/hanging quality.

Hudson's Golden Gem. In North Texas heat the entire apple is covered in a coper russett. I keep leaving them on the tree until they fall offf rotten. Which happens in mid September, and it's saposed to be a late apple. Not here. I haven't tasted it yet. Mine has only fruited two years and only a few. So I'll have to see. I have hight hopes despite youre review.

Great new stuff you posted! We have many new things to see and learn from you (as always)! If i got it right, when you move you'll take with you just the apples you like the most? After all this time you still inspire me with every new video you upload... you gave me so many new ideas and will to keep going with my orcard (beside apples im also into pears now, they are my new "thing" now). Wish you good health and tons of energy to keep going!!! Luka, Croatia

I've been following you for years and always love to watch your fall taste testing. I've been growing apples from seed mostly for grafting use, but the deer love young apple trees. I assume you have similar issues. Is there any deer prevention that really works outside of fencing? At this point I just live with losing most of what I plant. Still great fun. Thanks for the continued updates!
@SkillCult

aside from a vigilant dog on patrol 24/7, fences are pretty much it. You can spray with stinky stuff, but you have to reapply all the time. Not really a long term solution.

I currently have 8 gala apple seedlings that sprouted this spring 2023 in 3.7 gallon pots (because I don’t have any land ) and they are almost 6 feet tall and with hanging branches instead of branches pointing up , they all came from the same bag of “organic” gala apples and they all have different looks and morphology

Inspiring videos. I am in the UK (the dryer East side). I'm too old now for an extensive apple breeding adventure (but I will continue to do more grafting). However, I am going to try and inspire my grandson by doing some cross pollination with him in his dad's orchard. He has a collection of old apple varieties including two that I thought we may start by crossing together. Pitmaston Pineapple does have a unique taste but the fruit is very small on quite a small tree. Blenheim Orange on the other had can be a very large apple on a very strong tree. What do you think?
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 8 ай бұрын
If you can imagine the result of crossing two apples being really good, it might be. I have pitmaston, but it is not good here. and I don't have the other, so I can't comment much. There is a thing where large apples can be sort of diluted in flavor. not always, but commonly. So, you may not end up with the rich flavor of pitmaston in a larger apple. Only one way to find out though. I do ship pollen overseas, but what I have varies and people can snatch it up pretty quick. but it is not totally infeasible to ship it there in time to pollinate, depending on the pollen and your bloom time.
@ByronBTB
@ByronBTB 4 ай бұрын
Blenheim Orange is triploid, so that limits what you can breed it with. They're amazing, but they've typically been dead-ends breeding-wise.

Crimson gold is an interesting apple. There was apparently a mixup at some point with crimson gold and wickson (greenmantle nursery has a story about it), and people say Cuyama is inadvertently selling wicksons labeled as CG. I grow them both, but I like wickson more. CG reminds me of pina colada, maybe a bit too much on the acid side for my taste. I'd say your CG is the legit one -- flatter, bigger, and redder than wickson.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 8 ай бұрын
I've had those cuyama orchards Crimson Golds and they didn't seem like Wicksons to me. I've never seen them mixed up myself so far, as near as I can tell. The shape is different and average size difference as you said. Crimson gold is savory, but considerably less than Wickson. I wish my crimson gold tasted like pina colada lol. I'll have to pay attention to that.

Which growing zone is your orchard? Do you sell any Scions?
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 8 ай бұрын
I'm in one of the zone 9s the colder one. I do sell scions in the winter time. If they are very limited new varieties, I auction them on figbid.com Most are in the webstore. Best ways to find out when they drop in order are patreon, subbing to my blog, instagram, facebook, youtube.

Do you find there is more variation between first generation hybrid apples (on a single tree/graft) compared with established hybrids?

@@SkillCultI believe he's asking if the test trees taste different from the established tree. with sometimes only one branch holding the fruit, does fully establishing a tree rather than a branch produce different flavors? Or does the hybrid retain almost identically from first generation branch to fully established tree?
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 8 ай бұрын
Oh, that makes sense. It has been somewhat interesting. I suspect there can be a big difference, but I haven't decided yet for sure. Pink Lemonade is way different, almost like a different apple. so is genadine gold rush 11/5, to the point that I think it may be mislabelled. I think I will observer more over time. one could set up experiments, but it might take a lot of resources. @@KYRonDonTongLongSchlong

hey, if i could only have 2 varieties as a pair, what should i get? my uses are fresh eating and apple pie. they should be commonly available as well. im in zone 6b massachusetts if that makes a difference. thanks.
@SkillCult
@SkillCult 7 ай бұрын
The best answer is don't do that :) Learn to graft, then you can have two trees with up to dozens of varieties each. Even if you just make each branch a different variety, you could have 10 or so. Gold Rush is a very good home variety, but it is a winter apple that has to be picked in fall and stored to ripen. As far as others, it is just too hard for me to make recommendations for a place so different. Try joining the growing fruit forum. Nice people there from all over the country and the world that might be able to make suggestions based on experience.

...there's always grafting a scion (or 3) to an existing tree...just DON'T ask me to do the grafting; Not ONE of the 40+ grafts I've tried on apples or stone fruits trees over the last 3 years has survived more than a month.. I need a Hands-On class -- and mebbe swinging a dead chicken over my head to appease some Vegetal Spirits...
@TXVETJEB

@@neclark08 Don't give up hope. I'm only at about a 50% success rate for my grafts. I bought a Black Strawberr scion from Steven that took and as your experience, prombply died a month later. Fire blight got it. I might buy a Sundance scion. I've got 2 Kin David seedlings to graft out next spring, so why not add another.
