Actually this is very common practice, people that have the money for it would send out scouts to different countries and have them pick out fish for them just to compete or sometimes they them and leave it in the facility to grow out to be able to compete

that's normal for other types of fish shows in our country as well. But the other competitors do harbor mixed feelings as they bought and grown the fish themselves while another competitor, possibly a newbie, swoops in, no name, and just grabs the best in show trophy with a fish they bought from someone else that's ready to be competed in shows. It automatically sets for a bad reputation and we value reputation more than the trophy itself.

This is a hard moment for me, because I like nearly every video of Paul and I always thought he is an exemplar to every content creator and fishkeeper, including myself. Paul, please forgive me but this time you made a mistake, a colossal one. You know most of these dudes at the show are professional breeders, I dare to say some of them put like 3 decades(!!!) to raise these beautiful koi carps to perfect eye candy, this is art and devotion at the same time, which deserves a trophy at least, but even more. My family keeps fish since 5 decades with smaller pauses, my own experience with own fish is above 2 decades. And then you make this video, entering to a competition for PROS with freshly bought koi carps which you never seen before, therefore anyone can say you did put an absolute total of zero effort to raising them or care about their lives and yet you dare to touch the trophy????? You know as a fan of you I could accept this as a joke under 1 condition. If you would tell them them the truth about "your" koi carps and amit you would like to prank them and after that you should give the trophy to the breeder who placed second, right after you. Then my good fellow you could have been a decent competitor but this is simply low. Again, as a huge fan I morally disappointed in you after this video. I don't want apology or explanation but...I need like...days to reconsider if I want to follow you or not on KZbin and this is sad, because I watch your content since more than fourteen months and I respected you and what you do through all this period. 😓

I think it was mostly performative in nature on his part as a way for the company to reach a wider audience and potentially have a better opening into the US market. I do see your point of view though on the frustration of buying your way into something that people toil over for years.

The other part is that how disrespectful was this act towards professionals who put up their life to this and reached excellency in koi breeding, some of them might be second or third generation fishkeeper and breeder like myself and have family tradition behind the whole thing...and then comes Paul with a prank or some strange merchandising strategy and ruin someone's effort who is actually worthy by effort and legacy to get that trophy. The life is unfair, yes, but I always admired Paul and known him as a nice guy who is far from such trickery and mocking good people, this one case were such a slap for me that I can't tell what should I do now, as I wrote I have think about it for a while and we will see, but there's a fat chance I cannot forget this incident as long as I live, the reason is that I come frome a looooong bloodline of great fishkeepers and this competition video was like spitting on the legacy of my ancestors and every fishkeeper / breeder from the big old ones. I'm sad because of these reasons and also shocked. That's all.

Yeah this is gross, for all the reasons you listed, plus: Paul never really uses his platform to educate about these animals or how to properly take care of them - we had to whine at him over multiple videos before - but only with Caribsea's donation of materials - he finally built proper habitat for his community reef fish. (Like, he should be educating people on why they SHOULDN'T let their cats roam free, especially in Florida, but instead he does nothing which shows his lack of care for our planet. Responsible cat ownership means either keeping them entirely indoors or building them a safe escape-and-predator-proof enclosure so that they can't prey on local endangered wildlife (which they have an absolutely devastating effect upon,) or get killed by the miriad of threats which kitties face outside. Outdoor cats like his live significantly shorter lives (2-5 years) than those kept indoors or properly safely contained (12-16+ years average but 20+ years isn't unheard of for a cat. They're capable of living significantly longer than dogs.) Paul's channel can be summed up as 'watch rich white boy blow his bizarrely limitless money on increasingly expensive exotic animals and enclosures for no apparent reason other than to get a bunch of likes.' He never feels particularly genuine or caring to me, and it's creepy how on this particular video there's multiple comments that are all just the exact same line copy and pasted but posted 😢from different accounts. Paul has so many animals now that I bet he needs at least one fulltime staff to take care of them all. He's got so much reach but he isn't really doing anything good for the world with said reach, it's so disappointing. At this point I think the only reason that I am still even watching is out of morbid fascination and with every video I watch I consider never returning.

The best Koi are the Japanese Koi, if there's a second to it they are the Indonesian Koi. And Btw, if you ever want to put Kois in a show, your first choice should be any Gosanke (Kohaku, Showa, Sanke), and if not then other varieties. But points to remember, first, the body structure, a proper torpedo shaped long body fish. Second, pattern based on the variety you choose . Lastly, remembering to choose show quality fish only from the tategoi selection of the breeder.

The thing with Tanchos is the red circle sometimes changes with age and you have to watch out for one's that have been altered through surgery.
