At any point from like 9:02 until around 9:20 he could've moved his rook up one to their back rank, keeping the king from getting too close while still protecting the pawn. Kinda surprised he didn't see it.

Nop, because that pawn is protected twice and attacked twice, so it would have been a rook + queen in exchange of pawn and queen. A losing trade
