When I first got my spYder I stood up at a stop sign took my foot off the brake and without using the foot brake and promptly launched myself through the intersection, luckily I was way out in farm country and all I needed was a shower and new under ware. Glad your OK , vehicles can be fixed people not so much.

That Spyder also had a Pedal Commander, so a small slight twist of the throttle, it took off very fast, without the Pedal Commander, the outcome may have been different. I have not nor will I install a Pedal Commander on my new Spyder.

That was painful to watch. I’m glad you weren’t hurt. I ripped part of the bottom off of my Spyder a few months ago backing it out of my toy hauler. It’s a sick feeling when you realize you’ve had a catastrophic event on these machines. As long as we walk away unscathed everything else can be rectified. Stay safe & thanks for posting this video.

I learned that lesson the hard way decades ago in brand new scooter, bike drag my butt for 10ft LOL. Now first thing is park brake and neutral when stop somewhere that isnt a traffic light.

Hello Wayne, I just found your site some great stuff and content, I hear you with the crash, as I have MS I can only get on and off the right side of my Spyder so I have always made it a habit when I stop to put on the park brake, as I have to hope off to open the gates and having MS I can be quiet unsteady on my feet at times and yes mine has take off from me luckily it was flat and it only flattened some grass, I hope your ryde does not cost to much to repair it and the ego is a easy fix have a laugh 🤣😂over your favourite drink about it and you butt is there to remind you park brake 😀😀

That Spyder went to Spyder heaven, after the insurance company determined it was a total loss. 6 weeks after I made this video, I had a new Spyder in my garage, so all's well that ends well. And I won't make that mistake again 😊👍

Thanks Eric. The closest dealer was booked solid until July 19th, my dealer booked solid through July 11th but they told me to bring it in, and they would start working on it if anyone else cancels. I think the biggest delay will be waiting for whatever parts they need to do the repair.

Im still getting used to mine. Ive only had Elvira a year. I was getting confident and ihad her on a state route and slowed down for a curve but not enough. So if I’m understanding this, you were in an easy pass lane and stopped then you got off of the bike while it was in gear and running while holding onto the throttle. Is that correct?

Almost fully correct, got off the right side, my left hand grabbed onto the throttle as I stepped off... I must have twisted the throttle because it took off quick and before I could let go, the Spyder was already sharply turning to the right. Three bad mistakes: 1) Didn't put it in neutral 2) Didn't set the parking brake. 3) Grabbed the throttle as I stepped off

Regardless if the parking brake is engaged, never get off of the bike while it is in gear!

One of the reasons why I always put it on neutral and have always done the on every bike mostly becouse on a "real" bike you can't let go of the clutch when you stop. I guess that behaviour followed me to the spyder aswell.

I usually did the same, and i always do that now. I guess on that day, being in a toll booth, getting flustered, and trying to hurry, I just wasn't thinking straight. But, thank goodness no one got hurt, and 6 weeks later, I was riding my new Spyder and learned a valuable lesson 😁👍
