Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel!
Today's video is a major project I have been working on for several weeks. I created MY OWN version of a commercial break from the 1980s, just as you would see watching your favorite television show.
The commercials included are listed below, including links to their real-life counterpart (if they have one):
0:00 ABN ID ("Only the Best" campaign, 1985-86)
0:13 American Airlines (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqK2oquJlNR-a7c)
0:43 ABN News at this Hour (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpuqi3WAnqubi5I)
1:18 Andrew Ball Show Promo (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZKppHanbL2Yb9E)
1:48 Wake Up America Promo
2:13 AT&T (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m57dfGyam7Fjp68)
3:11 ABN Friday night promo (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZDRgn1vpJKDl9U)
3:32 ABN News promo (kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2HZfY2aet56a9E)
4:02 Metro-Sinai Health System (KBVN-TV ID)
4:07 The Okrah Windfire Show promo (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKC0p56eibdopqM)
4:37 The Law Offices of Wright and Hinkleman
5:20 KBVN-TV ID
5:27 Channel 7 Eyewitness News update
6:27 10PM PSA (KBVN-TV ID)
This is the most labor-intensive video I have ever worked on. I have tried to calculate how many hours went into this, but I can't come up with a good number. I worked on at least a portion of this video every day for more than two weeks, including days after work, and pulled two all-nighters for this project. As a detail oriented person, that usually adds time to the project.
Usually I can do a video in about 5-6 hours. I guess if we take that and multiply it by 14 commercials in this video, that's about 70-ish hours. I would say the AT&T and Okrah commercials took the longest to complete. Even some of the shorter videos, like the ABN ID, took longer to create. Then something like the KBVN-TV ID or Metro-Sinai ID was pretty quick to finish. So I would say 70 hours probably averages out.
I am so pleased with how it turned out. I hope you all agree since I have been talking it up for several weeks. This originally started as an idea to make a compilation of commercials I have already done. Then it turned into a mixture of old and new. Then it turned into strictly new commercials just for this video.
It also gave me a chance to do some remakes of commercials I have wanted to do for a while, like the longer AT&T jingle and the Oprah promo.
While the video length is not quite as long as "Scarves," this video by far took more time, both in terms of filming and editing. "Scarves" was one project or idea that flowed together - all the clips had to do with each other. This was multiple different things rolled up into one. It's crazy to watch this and see essentially 14 WEEKS of content (if we are comparing it to what I normally do) in one project.
Hope you all enjoy this as much as I do! Thanks for being here!

Dude! This is wicked!!! You've even nailed the mannerisms and voice tones in the news segments, looking at the notes, using the vocal build on each headline. There's a lot of small details in here some people may not notice but you've paid attention to the little things that make yesterday's TV experience uniquely "yesterday". Incredible job man. Like really well done. I'm going to share it mid morning tomorrow.

If I didn't watch your channel I could probably almost be fooled into believing it was footage from local news stations somewhere just outside the area I grew up in, or before the anchors I grew up with started. Hey there! They call me the Bane Of Every Retro KZbinr's Existence because i nitpick the hell out of this kind of stuff for accuracy. Consider me the final boss of retro content. You did an absolutely fantastic job, tone's on point, lovin' the labor of love in recreating the feelings of the segment, and might i add your knowledge of and choices in women's fashion are PERFECT. You MUST have already known a lot, darling because oh my gosh i can't give you enough praise on that front. Even the graphics, while yeah made on a modern computer LOOKED identical. If you ran them through a tape before uploading i can't tell you for sure i'd be able to tell what i could without that step. You've got a knack for this and might i say i'm very proud of you. I have ooooone little gripe though. The shirt/tie/jacket combos while all on the correct path were very obviously 2010s. There's a certain fit and styling to blazers in every decade, in the 1980s ties were not only wider but they weren't as parallel on the sides, and shirt collars were varied but the length of the blade and the shape it makes above the tie...well usually there's not much of a shape above the tie. That's the biggest deadest giveaway of the 2010s. All the other menswear? Spot on.
@andrewball_
@andrewball_ 2 жыл бұрын
Well, thank you for the compliments. I am a very realistic person and so I try to detail things as much as I can to make it as realistic and authentic as I can. So I appreciate your noticing those details. Yes, I will give you the men's dress shirts. I have to wear a jacket and tie everyday to work, so those are old dress shirts I've retired. It would probably be better if I wore my classic button-down collar dress shirts that have been around since the beginning of time, but I try to keep my work clothes like that and video clothes separate. As for the ties, I'm just curious which ones specifically. The ties used in say "Miami Shores," by me in the Andrew Ball Show promo, or Phillip Moore in the ABN News promo are actual ties from that time period. Otherwise most all other ties (with the exception of the lawyer or Peter Downs in ABN News at this Hour) are classic Brooks Brothers ties that have been made for many years. Maybe not stereotypical 80s, but styles that were made even around that time. For instance, the Green and Navy tie with yellow and red striping (called an Argyll & Sutherland rep tie) worn by David Humley in the ABN News promo was worn by one of the villians in Lethal Weapon 2 (1989). Of course, even if the same patterns of ties were made, the overall shape may have changed slightly over the years. However, I will agree, I need to grow my 80s men's wardrobe. Those kinds of outfits are much harder to come across than say casual men's wear or even women's wear for that matter. Thank you so much for being here!
@WSNO
@WSNO 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewball_ as far as the ties go, i did notice a few were more on-point than others, but in my experience even stuff that's "been made for many years" has some differences to be in line with other decades. Levi's jeans, for example, changes fit and cut even though most of the jeans stay the same. Those must be the ones that jumped out at me. I knew you were on the right path with them because there were some that the shape seemed off (might just be the shirt tbh) but the color shades and patterns were perfect. Really, its the jackets and the shirts. You're going to want to find blazers with medium width lapels (narrow are 2010s width, and wide are typically 1970s), and some with the notch at a different angle than you'd expect it at. Plaids and other materials like tweed and camel hair with the above you really don't see after the early 1990s, and there's a lot more shared between the late 1980s and early 1990s than there is different in TV. Grays are a safe bet but blues and darker & somewhat more muted tones of red and tan were more prevalent than in recent years. And the shirts, go for some extra color, but be wary about patterns if you don't know that its 1980s fur sure. There's plenty of plaid and gigham check in the 80s but 2010s versions look much different. One sure fire way i know to pick vintage over modern on similar styles of clothes (if you're thrifting for them, especially) is modern stuff always has these big silky tags with washing instructions in several languages. That wasn't really a thing before the 2000s. The graphic design on the tags is a good secondary check, but sometimes modern stuff tries to replicate it. And sometimes people cut those tags out but they always seem to leave a bit at the base so know where that tag's usually placed and check if there's any stub there if you're not sure. Thanks for hearing me out!

Had another thought, I’d love to see you introduce a new ultra glam character, maybe someone ala Lauren Hutton in American Gigolo but maybe a more accurate late 80s reference, Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting or Melanie Griffith (not as a secretary) in Working Girl. Think, Softer hair and impeccible sharp clothes which I think was more prominent with wealthier and more higher ranking female business leaders. It would be a nice contrast and help to encapsulate the full 80s aesthetic even more! Maybe even a fashion commercial? Aha

Everything about this is spot on as far as that 1980s feel goes! I even like how you emulated the style of the NBC show promos of that time. That ABC News "America's Choice" promo that you did a takeoff on was also pretty famous, and I envy your editing effects with the multiple newscasters you inserted in there! Please don't give up on this channel. Someone may want to hire you someday for acting, voiceovers, or newscasting based on all of this (you definitely have the intonations of a news anchor).

Thank you so much for the kind words and compliments, Michael. So glad you enjoyed it and could appreciate the spin-offs from the real thing(s). I wanted to be a news anchor for many, many years. That's what I was going to school for up until this year when I decided to take a break. I think I've all but pretty much decided I would much rather do something related to this (KZbin and/or video production) as opposed to broadcast journalism.
