It took 3 years for a guy in our club to make it the whole day on our annual vintage ride on a raider. So many things to possibly go wrong. He finally threw everything at it and tore it completely down. The next year he finally pulled it off making it back under its own power. It hasn't been back on the trail since and that was probably 10 years ago. I think once he conquered it he was also sick of that thing.

When I was a young boy, these 70’s sleds where new. I remember my dad saying “ ride for a day, and work on them for a week”. I haven’t owned sleds myself since the 90’s. My dads comments seemed to hold true. I think the new sleds are a lot better. But, as I’ve gotten older I don’t like the cold anymore. LOL

Because after he got it running good, he realized that the thing just does not handle very good because you can't use your body to help make it turn because you're sitting on your ass. Need to use body english to help turn a snowmobile like a motorcycle.

Vinny is literally like my ex supervisor at the mechanic shop I worked for. He was an ASE Gold certified mechanic and a legend. He would walk out in the shop and listen to the vehicle for a couple seconds and say ok do this and this and it'll be fixed. I would do it and it would be fixed. He kept all us apprenticing mechanics in constant aww.

That is something I learnt to do (been awhile since I have done it tho so rather rusty) but it does come with experience, going by the sound the engine (moving parts are working perfectly fine) somit is either running too rich and bogging itself out ( he did point out fuel was coming out of the carb when not running) or like the part that failed it could be something to do with its drivetrain that is causing it to stall
@greathornedowl3644 Жыл бұрын
Reminds me of my older brother. I was doing the timing on my 70 Ford F100 (300ci straight 6) caps, points, plugs wires, and belts. I was so smart I even bought a timing light. He gave me a side glance and turned the distributor until his ear told him it was perfect.

After you set the float with feeler gauge and assembled your carb you can check the needle valve blowoff pressure should take between 12 and 15 lb before the needle seat releases, need to get good gaskets for your chain case should have about a half a quart of oil in there to keep the chain lubricated it probably sit around for years and the oil drained away.
@seansysig Жыл бұрын
Check the tube that provides vacuum ie; fuel pulse. If it has cracks it will prevent the gas from pumping. The tensioner springs will be difficult to locate, you’ll be able to duplicate the bar.

If your having trouble heating up a screw on a fragile component that has locktite or something to secure it in place, and you don't want to overheat the body of the component, try a soldering iron turned to high and place directly onto the screw or bolt just heating the bolt or screw this usually works well, it may well take a bit of time and patience tho, it has worked well for me in the past.

After watching quite a few of your You tube videos I have to say, Joe your skills as a mechanic are truly Impeccable! A lot of people don't realize that it really takes a lot of talent and experience to resurrect as well as maintain these older machines. The worst part is when you're chasing down parts that they no longer make! Trying to make replacement parts from scratch is a true art. Not many people can do that. Best of luck on getting the Raider fixed. It really is an awesome machine even though it can really try your patience sometimes. Keep up the good work on those videos!

Try hitting the crank saft behind clutch with starting fluid while the engine is running and see if engine picks up in rpm. Could have a crank seal out. 2 strokes rely on a sealed crank case for fuel transfer throughout the engine

A twin carburetor will be fine on it like those ski roule mono carburetor crap, A twin mikuni with dual combine gaz feeder with dual air filter and new coils and spike plug and of course adjusting and cleaning the clutch will certainly help it a very unique sled you got here thanks for the video.

Is the spring broken that goes into that tensioner itself Joe. Sometimes they can snap the springs into.,or the chain that drives the unit due to A dried up.,or locked up bearing to. That was going bad underneath on it.
@johnhicks735 Жыл бұрын
Hey Joe try draining out all of the fuel in the tank. Tape A piece of old garden hose inside of your shop vacuum. To use to suck out the dirt& sand out of the bottom of the inside of your fuel tank with. Cause debris can get inside of it from dirty fuel canister's.& Bad.,or no screens on the gas stations fuel pumps to can cause it to collect dirt.& Etc. Over long time periods also. Just A heads up to you things like that. Have you ever used marine sta bil fuel stabilizer in your machines you're working on. You might.,or could be surprised by the outcome of that with the hard to start issues your having with it.

Honestly that carburetor looks pretty dirty inside I take some Scotch-Brite clean up the inside the best I could make everything nice and shiny so the next time I took it apart if there's any debris in there I know it's dirty there was some sand in there so you probably got sand in small orifices just a thought and put an inline filter before the carburetor so anything in the tank will get caught by the filter hopefully you won't have that problem again
