If it helps, I used Rustoleum self etch rattle can primer on my plane 4 years ago, and topped it with Rustoleum rattlecan paint. NO problems (including chips, delamination, etc.) yet.( if you want a data point for consideration)

Mark, Would you benefit, buy having Aircraft LIFTS, in the hanger to get them off the floor, since you have the height?
@Stratocruizer512 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the key to getting the primer to stick is to treat it with the Bonderite or Prekote to remove oxidation even from new aluminum. Some might think that because the metal is new it only needs to be cleaned with Acetone or Windex before primer.
@AnonyMous-jf4lc2 жыл бұрын
Epoxy primer just requires a rough surface to bond to and is much stronger, this is why Mark is putting epoxy on the main components. However, you don't need to treat with alodine if you are using an etch primer, just a 2k urethane. The etch primer is the same thing as treating as it attacks the oxidation on bare surfaces. You also can't sand etch and should be applying a 2k over the etch within the prescribed timeframe to seal it and allow proper bonding.

Mark, this is off topic to this video but can you talk about how you buy bulk A/N Nuts and Bolts at airshows and how you save money doing this? I think I heard you mention this in another video but I can't remember what you said about it. Thanks

Do you scuff up and the parts before you treat them? I will be painting my 701 in the near future. Just looking for some pointers.

How do you prevent overspray from going over the top of the "paint booth"?
@KitplaneEnthusiast2 жыл бұрын
For spraying small parts it's a non-issue. For large parts like the wings where there's a lot of paint spraying it can rise out of the booth. That's why I move the planes out when I paint.

Mark, is there a need to consider electrical bonding with your access panels ? .. or is the Alodine of the 1200S type (Conductive) ?
@johnfisk46662 жыл бұрын
Are you using the SPI epoxy primer that you used on the cruzer? i thought the big advantage was not having to use Alodine?
@KitplaneEnthusiast2 жыл бұрын
Yes I’ll order more SPI. I used alodine on these covers because I had it sitting around. Might make no difference but I wanted to use it up.

You really shouldn’t wash excess Bonderite down a residential drain. It is a chromium compound that you DO NOT want to wind up in your (or someone else’s) drinking water.
@AnonyMous-jf4lc2 жыл бұрын
Correct, and down any drain for that matter. Chemical compounds wreak havoc on treatment plants and can completely shut down the process if strong enough to kill the bugs.
@MrAaronroy2 жыл бұрын
It is also really bad for your own health due to the chromates in it! They’re a heavy metal that your body can’t expel. Other than that keep up the great work, I can’t wait to see the paint go on

Yes major a no no. Needs to be placed in suitable container then taken to local “household hazardous waste” collection day event or to suitable county dump station.

… I think I wiped that primer right off with denatured alcohol after it had dried
@KitplaneEnthusiast2 жыл бұрын
Not this primer you didn’t.
@TheJasonmurphy20052 жыл бұрын
@@KitplaneEnthusiast I will take a look at the can in my basement. I know it was self etching primer. I had applied it to bare aluminum which may have been an issue also. I was shocked when it happened. I was doing surface prep for bonding cleaned the surface with denatured alcohol and it came right off.

How do you like the Himalayan? Been eyeballing those bikes. Or is that a Scrambler?
@KitplaneEnthusiast2 жыл бұрын
I love it for how I ride. 99% of my riding is on back-country dirt roads going about 35mph just sight seeing. It's perfect for that. It will get up to 80mph on the highway but it's working hard, but I've done it. The other thing I really like about Royal Enfield is that they are basic bikes. I don't need 200hp and electronic this and that. I just want to ride, and they are perfect for that.
@wiplashsmile2 жыл бұрын
@@KitplaneEnthusiast Cool. Yeah, they seem ideal for that type of riding.
