@@equinoxXIIIIt's purely your speculation that she knows, and the idea that she knows doesn't actually make any sense if you think about it for more than 5 seconds. You think she'd actually be okay with Peter risking his life fighting violent criminals every day after she already lost her husband to one? You think she'd be okay with the possibility of Peter getting killed while being Spider-Man and leaving her all alone given that he's the last living member of her family? It's also heavily hinted that she _doesn't_ know, given that she doesn't even like Spider-Man at the beginning of the second film. What reason would she even have to pretend as though she didn't know if she _did_ know? Makes literally zero sense.

Aunt May and Uncle Ben are comic accurate, which wasn't a problem back in the 60's. Today, between cheap cosmetics and better understanding of nutrition, people don't look that old. They were meant to be in their 50's. Today, Selma Hayek is 58. We are used to much younger looking aunts and uncles. This is why they moved toward Sally Field (66-67 at the time of filming) in "the Amazing Spider-man" and Marisa Tomei (54 at the time of filming) in the current iteration. Whenever I think of Aunt May, this version, Rosemary Harris (72 at the time of filming 97 today, bless her!) is the first that springs to mind, mostly because she is the embodiment of the character. Much like how we think Patrick Stewart before James McAvoy when it comes to Professor X. The biggest problem with casting people of this age, is that their this age. It took the MCU 13 years to wrap up their first major story arc. If you employ someone who is 70, there is more than 50% chance that they won't finish a 13 year run.

Rosemary Harris looks like Aunt May from the comic book. Marisa Tomei is not Aunt May.
@axr7149
@axr7149 Ай бұрын
The funny thing is that Marisa Tomei is the most age-appropriate from an age gap standpoint. She is 32 years older than Tom Holland, literally making her old enough to be his mom. The age gap between Rosemary Harris and Tobey Maguire is 48 years (Rosemary just turned 97 a few days ago).

@@axr7149 Aunt May was a lot older than Peter in the comics. She’s his aunt not his mother. And if you read Marvel’s Civil War stories Peter Parker and Mary Jane had already been married and divorced and got back together again. Parker was never mentored by Ironman as a teenager.
@axr7149
@axr7149 Ай бұрын
@@tigerstripe6796 Technically speaking, aunts and uncles are supposed to be from the same generation/age range as the parents. At the same time, it is worth noting that in present day, people look younger than their age than when they did a generation ago. People in their 50s/early 60s back then would be someone in their 70s/early 80s now in terms of physical appearance. Clearly casting is made current to today's times. It seems to me like you are putting the comics on a pedestal and comparing the movies to that, which is a wrongheaded approach to take IMO since it always leads to complaints. There is no one absolute interpretation, and what we need to do is take into account present times while acknowledging where they are coming from at least. Nostalgia only prevents the ability of people to move forward IMO.
@rigrmortis3393
@rigrmortis3393 Ай бұрын
@@axr7149 "and what we need to do is take into account present times" No we absolutely do not need to concern ourselves with present times; that's why we're in the mess we're in with current media. Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, The Witcher, Doctor Who and so many others have been mutilated by morons adding modernity into timeless classics or otherwise enjoyable works. You know what happens when you add modernity into something timeless? You immediately date it and make it something only valid for that fixed point in time. People watching that perversion 5, 10 or 20 years down the road potentially won't have a clue about the themes added in. What people can do, nearly a century after its first printing, is pick up a copy of The Hobbit and get transported from their daily lives for however long they read it. "putting the comics on a pedestal and comparing the movies to that, which is a wrongheaded approach to take IMO since it always leads to complaints. " No that is a fan's inherent right. It's what fans have always done. Whether it be sports fans, movie fans or comic fans the one thing they have always been very good at is roasting / praising their passion. Whether right or wrong and that will hopefully never and shouldn't change. One of the best adaptations of all time imo, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, had people walking out because of this point or that. I obviously don't agree but that is their right. They can at least accurately define why they do or don't like something. The modern audience, besides not truly existing, has never been able to go beyond "I liked it" whereas fans can actually explain why something is or isn't good for hours. Financially, it's also stupid. Fans are free advertising; they literally won't shut up about their passion. I talked so much about the A Song of Ice and Fire series that a friend of my sister's was the one that told me about them making it into an HBO series. Now 20ish years later I feel quite a bit different about my endorsing of the book series. I feel like I owe everyone that started it an apology because that ......person is likely never going to finish the series and has been stringing us along. House of the Dragon had no business being as well received as it has been after that but fans came back. I haven't and won't until the ASoIaF is complete but others did. Because fans are passionate.

It really is all over the place. It's a decent movie, with some weird parts in it. But 3 villains doesn't work. Not if they are so tied to a complex plot. So obviously, the 3rd arc was rushed. And why did Pete forgive Flint, exactly? That story could have been explored and taken its time in a 4th movie, if this one focused on Harry. And Venom would have had to wait for a 5th movie. The studio botched it and didn't let Raimi do his thing.
@genghisgalahad8465
@genghisgalahad8465 Ай бұрын
Agreed. The writer teams for 2 (story by team, screenplay by team, and a third writer, total of five aren't in this one, leaving Sam and his brother and a writer to come up quick with a story squeezing in Venom AND Gwen), and the studio wanted number 3 asap hardly giving Raimi a break so this story went all over the place even if there were some key emotional tie-in's, definitely. Instead of something organic, they decided that the Venom symbiote would literally fall out of the sky! If Raimi had his indy way, there would be 5 Raimi Spidey's culminating in the Sinister Six. But as it turns out, we get the two TAS (with the second almost like this in how it's crowded and least liked Harry but a pivotal scene at the end), animated mIles Morales Spider-Verse, MCU Spidey, a tie in for almost all, and a sequel to Miles! So all in all, not too bad...

The origin of the symbiot Venom suit is pretty close to the comics. The way Peter gets rid of it and how it finds its way onto Eddie is right out of the comics. However, Topher Grace looks nothing like Eddie Brock in the comics. When I was a kid, Venom was a villain but eventually he and Spidey agreed to stay away from each and Eddie moved to San Francisco where the comic series Venom Lethal Protector is set. Something about this movie that frustrated me when I was younger: I was a big fan of Venom and thought that this was their poor way of trying to make a Venom character. But I'm sure that character probably exists in the comics, and I'm just not aware of it.. They waited too long to make a Venom movie. I haven't gotten to watch the Venom movies, except for a small snippet, and I didn't like what I saw. They was doing what you see in a lot of modern movies where they try to put a lot of that cringe humor/jokes in it that's genuinely not funny, but they act as if it clearly is. The people who control cinema in recent years are incapable of humor. It's painful.

The first Venom movie is actually pretty good. There are things holding it back from being great, but compared to the second one, it's a masterpiece, lol. The second one was so bad... the biggest thing holding both is the fact they didn't have the balls to go full R. How are you going to have Cletus Kasady, a deranged serial killer, and have your movie be pg13?
@Gutslinger

@@davidalvarado9957 I can see that being the case. If I ever get the chance to watch the first one, I'll try to. The short section I watched was of a sequel, and I hated it. He was at some fancy restaurant with some woman, an that inner monolog was going on. Then eventually he made his was to a church where Woody Harrelson was trying to marry a woman. Then a fight kinda ensues. And their attempt at humor throughout all of those scenes was painful to watch. I think the people in control of the majority of the movies are just incapable of writing humor.

@Gutslinger I have to disagree with @davidalvarado they do a terrible job in both the Venom movies. Tom Hardy is good casting but they completely changed his character, there is no Spider-Man involved at all and it's full of the cringe humor you mentioned. They then fail even worse in the sequel by introducing Carnage without going full on horror with him being the unhinged lunatic murderer that he is. I like Woody Harrelson but I honestly can't tell if the script was just that bad or if he was miscast, in either case it didn't work. Ultimately you will have to decide for yourself whether to give them a shot or not but as a Venom fan they fell way short of good imo.

@@-Anonymous-. Just the casting of Topher Grace (I think that's his name) as Eddie Brock / Venom negates your theory of this being great. I liked That 70's Show but man he was miscast terribly. This movie was more scatter-brained than Kurt Cobain and we can, as far as I understand, thank the interference for not getting a coherent story; whether good or bad. I can only hope that the original wouldn't have had "Bully Maguire" in it. Enjoy whatever you want but don't try and gaslight people by saying something objectively mediocre at best is "great".

IMO, the actress they chose for Gwen in this was very well cast. She didn't have the personality of the original Gwen in the comics, which was fine because this is variation on that theme, but the look was perfect. It's become a very complicated tale - because they've been writing stories with these characters since the 60s, but Gwen was the first girlfriend for Peter. As for a lot happening in this film ... well, they wanted to bring it all to a grand finale, I think, because IIRC Tobey was like 40 at the time.

Spider-Man 3 was meant Sandman and Harry Osborne is the new Goblin with is Side Story finally being completed with his death but stupid Avi Arad ruined it he interfered Sam vision put Venom in because if he wanted fans to like Spider-Man 3 even more put in our favorite character Venom but Sam doesn't know Venom he said something like he tried to make it work it didn't go well and it cost Harry to be sideline we were supposed to have more of him being evil Goblin and attacking Peter with his suit glider

Not accurate. There were many versions of the Spider-Man 3 script, but they always had two villains plus Harry. It was originally Vulture and Sandman, and Vulture's part was rewritten into Venom's. There is even remaining parts of the original script, like "a cellmate Sandman confessed his guilt to", which was Vulture.
