New to weightlifting here, why do people when deadlifting alternate their hands? For my inexperienced eyes, it would seem easier to keep your hands palm toward you.

It keeps the bar from rotating. Top deadlifters almost never have the grip strength to support their max pull with an overhand grip, and for women it is not even close. When you see strongman lifters or whatever where they are allowed to use straps, they'll almost always go with an overhand grip.

it all has to do with how long your arms are. longer arms and shorter legs make an easier deadlift. Pretty much opposite of bench press

She can lift much more, because it was the grip that gave in on that lift. That means that if she is practising hook grip then she can doo more, so i think aiming fir 600 lbs is a good goal here 🙂
