11:49 In Vietnam, the style isn't eating at a "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant, but at a "window-falling-off" restaurant. The dirty-looking black stuff on the buildings are molds. Many old buildings in Vietnam still have some old-style paints that contain calcium hydroxide & calcium carbonate with organic pigments that allow molds to thrive (like black molds on gypsum drywall in the US). It's difficult to wash them off (bleach & pressure washing). Hoi An may need a master plan to strip off the old paint, and have the whole town repainted with anti-mold paint, but it will be a challenge to create random variation of shade to retain its iconic antique, weathered yellow look, and then they may have to add those "dirty black mold streaks" to make all look authentic.

then the owner, standing in her front living room door, shows up in a Kinks rock and roll Tshirt...that has to be one of the greatest burger joints on the planet.

Tay Son and lord trinh is extremely complicated parts of Vietnamese history lol it is ways more complicated than game of thrones , so you cant really simplify it in one sentence.. Hoi An were most important legal trading port for foreigners of Nguyen lord in the south due to proximity to Hue which were capital of Nguyen lord and then Nguyen dynasty . The destructions of Hoi An probably came from Trinh lord attacking Nguyen Lord with the allegiance of Tay Son brothers , also Tay Son attacked a lot of Chinese , not because racism but because the Chinese pledged allegiance / loyal to Nguyen Lord.

I am not sure who or where you learned the history of Vietnam regarding Hội An from, but what you said is completely wrong about Lord Trinh and Tay Son. I am sorry, but please learn or research carefully about the history of any country before you speak about it.

What is completely wrong about it? Is it not true that Trinh and Tay Son had clashes and Hoi An city was destroyed? I'm open to hear your thoughts
@JohnLee-ek7zc9 ай бұрын
No, it was not. Lord Trinh and Tay Son had nothing to do with each other. Tay Son was led by Nguyen Hue (later, becoming Emperor Quang Trung, one of most admired persons and emperors in the Vietnam history). I am sorry, but I simply don't have time to explain it further. I know you learned it wrongly, but it wasn't your fault.
