In Malaysia we speak Malay hence most of the people you met felt awkward cause some Indonesian words are totally different from Malay and some we don't understand at all. Thus, it is much easier to speak in English with foreigners who speak Indon except the migrant workers at the counter and the lady that sells banana fritters who are from Indonesia. The lady at the counter that spoke English with you is definitely Malaysian. Anyways, hope you enjoy your stay

Nah, we can understand Bahasa Indonesian quite well. No problem because we treat Bahasa Indonesia as just one of Malay Language dialect.

Bro Malaysian don’t speak bahasa Indonesia - National language is Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Melayu. Bahasa Indonesia is deeply rooted to Bahasa Melayu. Jawa has their own bahasa, Bugis theirs and etc2.. But Malaysian’s Malays, Riau, Palembang has somewhat similar in terms of the language. Bahasa Melayu in Sabah & Sarawak is spoken differently..

Most Malaysians prefer to communicate in Bahasa Melayu i.e. bahasa kebanggaan dan bahasa kebangsaan Malaysia, obviously they don't feel comfortable with bahasa Indonesia. Malaysian second language is English is more usage in the cities or towns where there are more diverse netizens and foreigners.. Btw, most of the migrant workers you met especially at eateries are foreign workers like in Wanjo majority are Indonesians, some of you met in Kampung Baru are Indonesians and Bangladeshis and they don't speak English and also sometimes they look unfriendly because they are PATI i.e. Pendatang Tanpa Izin aka illegal migrants, that's why they try to avoid cameras or talking to you.. So, in case you meet anyone who looks like a Malaysian do try to ask them where they came from..👍☺️

Bahasa Malaysia, base from Bahasa Melayu + loan words from Bahasa English Bahasa Indonesia, base form Bahasa Melayu + loan words from Bahasa Belanda Some original words from Bahasa Melayu we understand each others. But, the loan words from English and Belanda mostly we don't understand.

The sambal at Wanjo is actually more relaxed. There is another place called Village Park. Their version is extra spicy. Also, you can find East Malaysian dishes like Laksam, Nasi Kerabu and Nasi Dagang at opposite side of Wanjo.

Formal Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia are 99% similar as Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia have standardized it. Just browse the Bahasa Indonesia Official Dictionary. When you are unsure, always ask them what is most popular and the favourites. Problem solved. The servers are generally very helpful and especially more popular places like wanjo. Also try not to use slang when speaking as it will confuse most of them....

Indonesia mixes a lot of English into Indonesian by changing the sound at the end and that is strange for Malaysians because Malay is not the mother tongue of the Javanese people who were only established in 1928. While Malay has been used for hundreds of years from Champa Vietnam, Southern Thailand , Singapore, Riau Sumatra and Brunei without problems and mutual respect. The problem arises when Indonesians claim that their language is more advanced while the Malay language that still maintains the original language is called the regional language. For example, they mention investasi English origin, in Malay pelaburan. Identitas English original but in Malay jati diri, prioritas English origin, Malay is keutamaan, toilet English origin, in Malay tandas, famili English origin, in Malay keluarga, butoh means male genitalia, pantat means female genitalia, bisa in Malay meaning poison or pain from a bee sting or pain from a snake bite. That's why when foreigners try to speak Indonesian, Malays in the city prefer to speak English because it makes it easier to understand. Fried Rice, Sweet Murtabak, bakso from Fujian China, tempeh from Japan. UNESCO recognizes Javanese Batik but the origin of Batik is not known and believed to be from the Indian subcontinent Batik has also been found in Egyptian mummy burials. The origin of Malaysian Batik is based on a record of a Malay manuscript published in 1500, when the Sultan of Malacca ordered the ruler Hang Nadim to buy colored cloth from India but Hang Nadim did not like the Batik pattern he saw there and created his own batik pattern and brought it home. So Malaysian Batik has nothing to do with Javanese Batik. While Wayang Kulit Malaysia specifically in Kelantan is influenced by Wayang Kulit Myanmar and Thailand. It must be known that Malacca was a famous trading center in the 15th century. A Malay-Chinese dictionary was also published in the 15th century which was named the Malacca Malay Dictionary. History tells that initially the Portuguese wanted to attack Mecca in Saudi Arabia to avenge the fall of the Christian city of Constantinopolis (Istanbul) and changed their plan to attack Malacca, which was rich in the spice trade and also an Islamic center protected by the Ottoman government. The fall of Melaka was due to the betrayal of two individuals, Sikitul and Datuk Mandeliar who happened to be Javanese who were entrusted with guarding the Port entrance. But in the end these two individuals were also killed by the Portuguese for alleged treason. It should also be known that besides Siam, Majapahit from the Java islands often tried to conquer Malacca but all those attempts failed.
