The thing I absolutely hate about these dramas are they are relationships built on such bad treatment of the female lead. AND then they still end up with the person who treated them like sh*t and degraded and disrespected them. {deep sigh} The portrayal of women as weak, insecure, clingy, unintelligent or silly when the ML appears, and willing to do ANYTHING for love is truly a trope that needs to end in C-dramas.

Definitely. His ego plus the selfish feeling of betrayal ate up his rational mind. It is not enough that for what he thought Xiaojie has done, he has openly and publicly embarrassed her during their engagement then dragged her from the stage and almost spat on her face while he continued to yell at her before throwing their ring into the pond. He did not give her the benefit of the doubt. I'm not excusing that Gao Jie kept the secret from him about her family but she had nothing to do with the aunt's plan who also betrayed her.
