If at all possible speak to your financial advisor about life insurance. Be careful with online ones. Companies are also rated on their actual payout. Most people don't know this and guessing an online dealer will not advise you on this. Should definitely be a part of an overall financial plan. Not just some arbitrary amount.

The corn glows like gold nuggets. Beautiful. Thank you Cole for taking us along on your journey to learn more about getting a higher yield and a better product. We are all pulling for record breaking numbers this year. I think it's awesome that the products you are using, has someone to come out and help with it all. I know it's good for their business, but I like it that they are trying to get the best too. I'm wondering what you will be doing to try to get rid of the tar spot problem. Always fun watching Cooper work on the machinery. He has a amazing ability to problem solve. Like you Cole. And again, give that puppy hugs, I love seeing him around.

Wow, 25-30 years ago, I worked with the USDA. The closest thing we had to a computer were our desk top calculators. We had 2 farmers who had recently graduated from ISU, and were using very simple programs on their computers. But, it was a beginning, and they made money. During the farm crisis of the '80's, any profit was great. To see so many learning from ISU and of course, growing up on a farm, family farms are back, and running the corporate run farms out of business. It's great to see how you, your brother, and father doing what they excel at, but, everyone can fill in for the other. It's also great to see family. I would do anything to have a family, and friends, like yours. You're all truly blessed. ❤😊

At 15:01: "Obviously there's something that caused us to have 302 (Bu/Acre) in this row vs. the other ones." I looked at the next row and saw it was 217. I wondered if competition between adjacent rows for light, water and nutrients might be a factor. Thanks for the video Cornstars. BTW, good to see you eating pizza again. Cole, I do math and statistics for a living. Let me help you. The first thing to do is to calculate the mean (as you did). That's about 253. Next thing to do is the standard deviation. It's about 21. This two numbers can tell you how much of your measurements are due to normal random fluctuations and which are due to real differences. If you take the mean plus two times the standard dev you are in the top 5%. (There is some serious math behind this, you can look it up if you are interested) In your case that's above 295. There are two rows which have that yield., the 298 and the 302. On the other hand, if you look at the 5% level then there is a 1 in 20 chance that a random row is in there. So with 24 rows you expect at least one value this high, just by chance. Pure random reasons. You can still have all rows below 295 but chances are you have at least one. So now the question is: How likely is it that you have 2 (or more) rows above the 5% threshold? That's easy to calculate, you can do it with excel with the BINOMDIST function. Its about 34%., use this formula: =BINOMDIST(22,24,0.95,TRUE). There is a 71% random chance that you have at least one row over 295 yield., use this formula: =BINOMDIST(23,24,0.95,TRUE). The chance that you have no rows with this yield is 100%-71% = 29%. So to summarize: The chances that you have at least 2 rows with yield above 295 are about equal as the chance that you have no rows at all above 295. My conclusion: These fluctuations are random. Sorry.

Awesome that you guys are letting the data inform your practices and increase your knowledge of your farm and your craft. I would love to see the Cornstar family keep trying more regenerative farming practices. I was glad to see you all go (mostly?) no-till. Cover crops, reduced synthetics, livestock, etc. - any of these would be awesome. A focus on profit per acre would also be more relevant measure of performance for the farm than a yield per acre metric.

I have been a farmer for the last 60 yrs and have just accepted that there are way too many variables in a field to perfect it. Shelterbelts, sand ridges, low areas, tire tracks, planter depth, rain variance from mile to mile, planting dates, summer heat, fall frost, variety traits, emergence of hardy plants, harvest loss at header or back end of each combine, moisture content at harvesting. etc.....................................I just came to the conclusion that all you can really do is accept the average of everything we do in life, because everyone, everything, and every action are completely different in their makeup. Yes, Cole, you are on the right thought process with your testing but realistic, you have to go with the variety that seems to be making a statement in your area, spray and fertilize the crap out of it like you are doing, and leave the next step to Mother Nature. The Lord will give you a very good average...

But it never hurts to be over insured to protect the family and protect everything you worked so hard for. So that it wasn’t all for nothing.

There is a technique called the Toguchi method. The method is used mainly in electronics. It's designed to identify the key factors that affect the final product. It allows you to investigate a lot of the variables that affect your final product. In electronics it used to determine processing details, e.g., which chemical for a given step, how strong the solution should be, how long to use the chemical. I think that it would be a natural way to investigate your corn yield. The U of Iowa should be up on the method, perhaps in the engineering or mathematics departments. The method allows you to examine a lot of variables in just a relatively few experiments. The Ag department at the U of Iowa should be able to help you to: 1) identify which variables you want to examine, 2) determine high and low values for each variable, e.g., amount of chemical fertilizer to be used, and 3) identify control variables over which you have no control, e.g., the weather. When you use this method, you'll find out which variables have the greatest influence on you final product, e.g., amount of bushels per acre. Then you can concentrate on those variables in subsequent tests to identify the optimum values for each variable. Sounds complicated and it is. I looked into the method for an engineering problem I was having. We didn't end up using it, but I was impressed over its ability to examine a lot of variables with a small number of tests. I'd like to know if you contact the U of Iowa and whether they can help you with this. It would make a neat PhD project.

You would often pull an ear, or the silk, or the husk, etc. So my question is could today's samples be in an area that you would have pulled off ears earlier❓️ That one extra huge ear could have been on a row that was at 285. That one large ear could have easily pushed it over 300. Just a thought to ponder...🤔

Fantastic break down of the yield. Lots of work but I’m sure it’ll be worth the effort. Press ON regardless. Blessings and a safe Harvest.

I'll say a prayer tonight that everything goes smoothly on the Cornstar farm for corn harvest and be at least as smooth or better than beans were. Great video and that add read by Daddy Cornstar was a lot of fun as well as it's always good to hear from Cooper and friends. Really enjoy when you get all nerdy with the numbers Cole and finding those little or big things that effect yields will make or break a farm as you well know the same or even more than any business. God Bless... Edit to Add: I'll add all our farmers into that prayer of course...

You need more data! In each field, take your sample, then move down 300 feet and repeat with another sample. Then do it one more time. Individual data points, which is what you will have with single samples, are too erratic for making decisions.

Great approach to verify ways to increase your yields. Your shucking corn in the field with one hand while holding the camera was discerning. . . . . . Eons ago, my older brother nearly amputated his thumb shucking corn bare handed, the husk cut most of the way through the bone.

The little red sheller reminded me of the adult sized one my Grandpa had. We shelled corn and also knocked the thick green outer shell off of black walnuts after the first frost.

Shove a drill on that sheller, and a pipe on the top to load the ears, might make that shelling a bit faster
