A problem in the area I'm in is that some of the hobby shops aren't getting direct from Topps or Panini so they hit the shelves at Walmart or target and buy all of the boxes and mark them up to 40-50 from the 25-37 I hate "flippers" they take opportunity away from kids who can't go into hobby shops. The sad truth is that it happens in ALL facets of collecting. Back in the mid 2000s, I was collecting Star Wars figures as well as Disney Pixar Cars for my kids. I used to be there at openings of Target as well as Toys R Us. Sure enough, there were the collectors who bought up all of the Hot Wheels and the Star Wars figures. Left the pegs empty. It pissed me off that the Hot Wheels guys would go into the Star Wars section and buy the figures up too. So what I used to do is get to the Hot Wheels section before them, buy up all of the Treasure Hunts they were looking for at the time and just hoard them. Years later I would just go and sell them off. Fast forward to 2024, it hasn't changed. There is always going to be a demand for items and "scalpers" are going to be the ones who swoop in and buy them before everyone else. They are the ones who drive up the prices. The best way to combat that is not to buy from them. Don't pay their prices. I gave all that up a long time ago. That is why I collect vintage. You aren't going to be seeing my butt at a Target or Walmart at opening anymore.

Shouldn't the stores limit the quantity of boxes they sell. In Canada, several stores limit the purchase to two of each product which is fair and it also helps prevent greed. Then again, don't buy anything online from ebay or any other social network. If everyone boycotted these greedy asses then they wouldn't be in business for long. Great video, thanks.

Very much reminds me of 2020-2021 at Target locations. Scalpers and flippers would literally be standing in groups near the card section as they watched the poor vendor lady doing her job and restocking, and then as soon as she left they'd swarm and the card section would be just as empty as it was before the vendor got there. Granted, supply has caught up these days so it's not as extreme anymore, but the flippers are still out there.

If you had card collection (baseball & football) from 1978 - 1993 how would you proceed to sell them and use that money to buy modern cards (would target prospects in football). Would you go thru and try to find cards that could sell well (example: Ozzie Smith 1979 PSA10 goes for 30k but PSA8 only goes for 110, Joe Montana 1981 goes for 60k if its PSA10. Cards from that time period didn't use precision used today so PSA10 are rare. Would you waste your time examining those cards to determine if they are PSA10 then send them for grading or is that a colossal waste of time and its better to just scan those cards and load them onto ebay and just let people bid on them? Thank you
@kcardsbb
@kcardsbb 9 ай бұрын
Carl: Great question! Cards from that era generally have minimal value unless it is star cards. I wouldn’t count on any cards from that era being graded a 10. A really good card from the 80’s would be an 8 so that is the best you could expect. Check the pop report to see what the average is for cards you want to sell. They average about an 8 so I expect that is what you can expect from your cards. I would also check you comps to see what your valu. Our #values for I 😊

Outstanding video. You are 100% correct in your view. It’s bad enough that the card products are getting more expensive consistently and driving the young collector away because they can’t afford the products. I’m a true collector not investor and I’ve been collecting since 1970. It’s a awesome hobby that I hope will continue to flourish and grow. I personally collect vintage cards. I hate walking in to hobby shops to and seeing retail with a markup. I just pray to get lucky when I’m venturing my local Walmart or meijers. Not supporting this behavior when you already take a hit as soon as you buy a box. Prices have become crazy and almost impossible to collect sets better than flagship or low-mid end. Spend 500 and get absolute garbage. Most patches/jersey cards aren’t even from a specific player or event anymore.

I agree with you about guys clearing out a product and then re-selling it...Also, shipping will affect the profit margin...there is no money in flipping blasters anymore...those guys need to re-evaluate things! However, I rip boxes...and card shops have large overhead (which makes sense) so I would prefer to get retail at MSRP lol! I hunt for cards to rip...Just this week I drove to a walmart, got 8 Optic blasters, and made sure this other guy got 4...(what he wanted..) I then drove even further and hit another walmart and was the first guy there to the vendor by 15 minutes! I asked the vendor how many she had, and that I wanted her usual local guys to be happy too...She gave me 12 blasteres of Optic and said had plenty for whoever came next... Bottom line, I buy in bulk, but to rip and collect and enjoy! If there are other people present or not, I will always leave some behind...For us card hunters, especially at Walmart, you must be punctual and or lucky, and theres a certain feeling hitting a walmart restock on some optic!! But we all need to understand that we can and should share with other collectors around you. Those scalpers are wasting gas money, shipping fees, ebay fee...They wont be in the game long...It will be just collectors / card hunters like me, who are more prompt and punctual to the product, who get the cards.

I think people need to just give up on the hobby altogether. These boxes are way overpriced to begin with, and what they contain is about 95% trash. If you're going to gamble like that, might as well go to the nearest casino. Breakers, resellers, and the card companies themselves with their greed have ruined the hobby. I get it. You guys are going to continue to collect. If you do, just go after the singles you actually like.

The problem with the hobby is that these ball card shops want a ton of money for cards, and at the end of the day, 99% of them aren't worth a tinkers damn. They expect people to spend a fortune for little to no return. I will not get back into that hole.
@kcardsbb
@kcardsbb 9 ай бұрын
Thanks Scott, I do agree that card shops are way overpriced but I think some of that comes from the manufacturers. The card shop has to make a profit so I get that but the price is driven by Fanatics and Panini. Until they give us better value you will see box sales start to go down. That being said people keep buying series 1 even though card counts and quality was down.

Target & Walmart should put a strict limited # PER ID, PER DAY because its ruining our hobby! People like that guy are too lazy to work a real job like a real man (unless someone is disabled). I too am an NHL fan from Arizona, already heartbroken that we lost our Coyotes and couldn't even score UD Series 2 and I know Bedard will be good. Thank God for Extended Series which is a fun rip and those Bedard cards will be a part of his rookie year story, even if they're not his Young Guns. My local Barnes & Nobles which I walk to check out is the same thing. People buy up Optic football blasters so there's nothing left for us, then drive up the prices on eBay! Same w/Bowman Megas and Topps Monster Boxes. I'd rather pay the company more than pay some lazy dude who doesn't wanna work a job. Thumbs up , great vid.

I’m in Orange County, CA. I will build online orders and will not necessarily early adopt a set of cards as I seek multiple years and certain formats of baseball products. Little interest in turning a profit. There are far better ways to make a buck. However I’ve taken enough field trips when delivering UberEats to know we have Targets/WalMarts/Dick’s/Best Buy that appear to make almost zero effort at stocking cards, while a few stores will legit restock and get bombarded. Better performing stores in more affluent areas seem to make the effort to fill the shelves. I know where I might find something and where it’s not worth turning into the parking lot.

Unfortunately as you mentioned, the hobby is ruined! This hobby is all about collecting and getting excited to complete a set or rainbow or SSP cards for a team or player! But since 2017-2018 the hobby has become very expensive and meant to become a business! These flippers care less about the cards and the hobby, all what they care about is flipping and making money! Very sad!

That would be really frustrating. He thinks he’s making a killing but he’s not. I would say he makes about 5 dollars a box. 5 times 28 is 140 profit but not counting shipping supplies. It’s so lame to be that much of a prick to act like he owns the boxes before he buys them at the store. What a loser. I hate people who buy every last box or pack

I say he’s free to be a jerk and I am free to think “Go Away” and “I’ll never buy from You” when a guy like that sets up w a high price at a show or lists high on eBay. I agree with you, just let him eat the cards.

He grabbed every Blaster box on the shelf and buried a small child in the detritus. Since they were retail boxes the Coroner didn’t hit any auto pulls, just sparkly trash. One time in 1988 pulled an 1983 Wade Boggs RC from a sealed wax pack for $5.00 and it had an old piece of gum stuck to it. Sometimes life is an unpleasant venture.

Bought 5 megas for 299.00 pulled a base and silver webby and sold for 1000.00 total, made 650 ish. Huuuge gamble anymore since they raised prices on everything. Another story, with my buddy and 5 blasters were at Wally world, I let him pick 2 and he pulled a wemby red seismic/299, lesson is always buy them all! I'll never do that again!!!

Isn't that capitalism, what America was built on ? That doesn't just happen in sports cards , it's in everything, the buyer drives the market. The buyer can't sell them cards on EBAY at the price if no one will pay his price. These poor kids don't mind getting a sweet pull and them go to a show to make big bucks on that pull.

Literally everywhere I go to look for cards this is happening it has gotten very old and I have been fed up for a long time. These "guys" sit at the store, they're there waiting for the store to open on stock day. Makes it literally impossible for guys like us who actually care about the hobby to ever get out hands on something. Almost every time it's some meth head looking dude- sorry to stereotype, it's just the truth.
