The sad truth is that it happens in ALL facets of collecting. Back in the mid 2000s, I was collecting Star Wars figures as well as Disney Pixar Cars for my kids. I used to be there at openings of Target as well as Toys R Us. Sure enough, there were the collectors who bought up all of the Hot Wheels and the Star Wars figures. Left the pegs empty. It pissed me off that the Hot Wheels guys would go into the Star Wars section and buy the figures up too. So what I used to do is get to the Hot Wheels section before them, buy up all of the Treasure Hunts they were looking for at the time and just hoard them. Years later I would just go and sell them off. Fast forward to 2024, it hasn't changed. There is always going to be a demand for items and "scalpers" are going to be the ones who swoop in and buy them before everyone else. They are the ones who drive up the prices. The best way to combat that is not to buy from them. Don't pay their prices. I gave all that up a long time ago. That is why I collect vintage. You aren't going to be seeing my butt at a Target or Walmart at opening anymore.

Very much reminds me of 2020-2021 at Target locations. Scalpers and flippers would literally be standing in groups near the card section as they watched the poor vendor lady doing her job and restocking, and then as soon as she left they'd swarm and the card section would be just as empty as it was before the vendor got there. Granted, supply has caught up these days so it's not as extreme anymore, but the flippers are still out there.

If you had card collection (baseball & football) from 1978 - 1993 how would you proceed to sell them and use that money to buy modern cards (would target prospects in football). Would you go thru and try to find cards that could sell well (example: Ozzie Smith 1979 PSA10 goes for 30k but PSA8 only goes for 110, Joe Montana 1981 goes for 60k if its PSA10. Cards from that time period didn't use precision used today so PSA10 are rare. Would you waste your time examining those cards to determine if they are PSA10 then send them for grading or is that a colossal waste of time and its better to just scan those cards and load them onto ebay and just let people bid on them? Thank you
@kcardsbb9 ай бұрын
Carl: Great question! Cards from that era generally have minimal value unless it is star cards. I wouldn’t count on any cards from that era being graded a 10. A really good card from the 80’s would be an 8 so that is the best you could expect. Check the pop report to see what the average is for cards you want to sell. They average about an 8 so I expect that is what you can expect from your cards. I would also check you comps to see what your valu. Our #values for I 😊

I agree with you about guys clearing out a product and then re-selling it...Also, shipping will affect the profit margin...there is no money in flipping blasters anymore...those guys need to re-evaluate things! However, I rip boxes...and card shops have large overhead (which makes sense) so I would prefer to get retail at MSRP lol! I hunt for cards to rip...Just this week I drove to a walmart, got 8 Optic blasters, and made sure this other guy got 4...(what he wanted..) I then drove even further and hit another walmart and was the first guy there to the vendor by 15 minutes! I asked the vendor how many she had, and that I wanted her usual local guys to be happy too...She gave me 12 blasteres of Optic and said had plenty for whoever came next... Bottom line, I buy in bulk, but to rip and collect and enjoy! If there are other people present or not, I will always leave some behind...For us card hunters, especially at Walmart, you must be punctual and or lucky, and theres a certain feeling hitting a walmart restock on some optic!! But we all need to understand that we can and should share with other collectors around you. Those scalpers are wasting gas money, shipping fees, ebay fee...They wont be in the game long...It will be just collectors / card hunters like me, who are more prompt and punctual to the product, who get the cards.

Little interest in turning a profit. There are far better ways to make a buck. However I’ve taken enough field trips when delivering UberEats to know we have Targets/WalMarts/Dick’s/Best Buy that appear to make almost zero effort at stocking cards, while a few stores will legit restock and get bombarded. Better performing stores in more affluent areas seem to make the effort to fill the shelves. I know where I might find something and where it’s not worth turning into the parking lot.

Amen brother, I hate these a-holes. If you want to make money, buy from a wholesaler and re-sell. Dont wipe out the retail shelf unless u plan to rip them.

He grabbed every Blaster box on the shelf and buried a small child in the detritus. Since they were retail boxes the Coroner didn’t hit any auto pulls, just sparkly trash. One time in 1988 pulled an 1983 Wade Boggs RC from a sealed wax pack for $5.00 and it had an old piece of gum stuck to it. Sometimes life is an unpleasant venture.

Unbelievable. I thought Target was limiting card purchases to 2-3 boxes per visit? Can you share his eBay? I would love to add my two cents.
@kcardsbb9 ай бұрын
No I didn’t even ask his eBay seller ID, I didn’t care. Most Targets went to a limit of 5 and now have removed limits within the last year. Thanks for the comment, if you have content ideas please let me know.

It’s really getting to the point where singles are the only way to collect. Breaking is great when it’s not all about profit, but sadly most of the breakers don’t care about the hobby.

I will never pay more than retail, when I find product worth buying like prizm basketball this year with Wembley, I'm buying all of it. Bought 5 megas for 299.00 pulled a base and silver webby and sold for 1000.00 total, made 650 ish. Huuuge gamble anymore since they raised prices on everything. Another story, with my buddy and 5 blasters were at Wally world, I let him pick 2 and he pulled a wemby red seismic/299, lesson is always buy them all! I'll never do that again!!!

Isn't that capitalism, what America was built on ? That doesn't just happen in sports cards , it's in everything, the buyer drives the market. The buyer can't sell them cards on EBAY at the price if no one will pay his price. These poor kids don't mind getting a sweet pull and them go to a show to make big bucks on that pull.

8 year old kids should NOT be opening cards. They should be for adults only, 18 or 21years and up. Its gambling. If i see them i buy the whole shelf, but im a collector and a hobbyist. Im not reselling. I would have peeled you off a couple.
@clarkprice2229 ай бұрын
Sounds like you had multiple opportunities to grab a couple so thats on you for not getting any. I get your frustration but it is part of the hobby now. Even your local LCS is selling retail for an upcharge. Grab it when you see it.

This kind of crap became very rampant once covid hit. I am so sorry to hear about this and I know how you feel because I've been in this situation A lot. Literally everywhere I go to look for cards this is happening it has gotten very old and I have been fed up for a long time. These "guys" sit at the store, they're there waiting for the store to open on stock day. Makes it literally impossible for guys like us who actually care about the hobby to ever get out hands on something. Almost every time it's some meth head looking dude- sorry to stereotype, it's just the truth.

I've run into the same problem here in Fargo at Scheels. Every day they stock the shelves, someone comes in and buys up everything (blaster boxes and hangers) after talking to one of the associates there. Topps, Donruss, panini. All of the boxes go immediately. It really sucks. I buy for my son, and I usually buy 3 or 4 at a time for him to open up every month.
