Not necessarily. I walked on at ole miss earned a scholarship transferred to Memphis had to sit out a year due to ncaa eligibility rules at that time transferring D1 schools. The year I had to sit out I broke my foot and started the following year at safety both years on scholarship. It depends on the caliber player you are. They only get rid of you if you suck lol😂

It’s a business. That’s why it starts before you get to college. Kids need to be just as focused on their grades like they’re with sports. My father instilled in me how important my grades were just in case I do get injured, which I did my senior year which why I had to walk on. Thank God I graduated with honors because of what my father instilled in me. It’s 2024 for this to be still going on you can’t blame the institutions completely because it’s a business and if we want to participate in this business we need to educate ourselves. My coach David Cutcliffe at ole miss before he left and went to Duke promised me a scholarship but I stayed the course and earned my scholarship with Ed Ogeron. Just like Greeny said, had the NCAA had reasonable rules to begin with, this would’ve probably never happened. From the beginning, the student athlete should’ve been paid at least a little bit. This BS of the “normal” college student being allowed to work at PT job to cover some expenses and such while in college but the student athlete couldn’t is ridiculous. I get their “payment” in a lot of cases is a full ride scholarship but, a scholarship isn’t gonna cover the expenses if a player wants to go home for a weekend or go out on a date, etc….

Legally, you don’t need a piece of paper to have a valid contract. If one party makes an offer and the other party accepts it, that is a valid contract under the law. UNLV: “Hey, kid, we’ll give you $100,000 to come play for us.” Player: “OK, you got a deal!” That’s a valid contract every day of the week. Of course, verbal contracts are harder to prove, especially when one party sleazes out of it like UNLV did. Shame on them.

It's the wild west because the schools are not paying. They aren't allowed. So, all this has to be done by a third party, in conjunction with the school. There was a player with a million dollar deal that was only provided 20% of what he was promised because he failed to live up to their standards. Whose standards? On the field, in the class, say something "wrong" on social media? Does the school get say, or can the third party just stop paying? There is no standard, and every school is on its own. Some are going to be ultra-sketchy, and some are going to do right by their players. But how are the players going to know? Whose keeping track. In most cases, neither side wants to make it a story. This broke because you can't hide a player leaving. But so far, schools have believed the players won't/can't leave. I would hate to be the parent of an 18-year-old football or basketball star right now. You can no longer just "follow the rules," you have to play a complicated game with career con artists.

When the contract is legally binding, the school or whatever “third party” is paying that money regardless. There’s about several million people right now with huge debt looming over them that would probably see having their college expenses paid for as a form of payment. College education “costs” have become a scam. Everyone with that amount of debt should have it forgiven to begin with. Don’t equate two things which are not equal. If you hire a contractor to build you something, don’t be surprised when they up and leave before the job is finished because you’re not paying expenses.

I hate this. College players in the past might not haven been compensated with paychecks but they were compensated. Free tuition, food, board, travel. All for a sport they play 4 months out of the year. The tuition alone could cost $200,000 plus. We act like these student athletes were homeless. They aren’t professionals they are student athletes and should be treated as such. Just so sad to watch the FBS & FCS devolve into what it is now.

The whole NIL thing needs to go away. These kids used to receive a very expensive free education and all expenses which added up to a lot. Now, It’s just paying professional players who dont really attend classes to represent your college. Yes, the colleges make a lot of money on this but it’s basically outsourcing random people to represent your school. Nobody has ever spoken of admission standards anymore because these high end kids don’t even attend classes. They are not student athletes but professional athletes in the minor leagues. Reply

I agree it sucks leaving his team like that but football is a business so we should treat is as such. He was promised 100k to leave his school that he was successful at and join them and he only got a 3k moving stipend. Imagine if you were offered a job and they promised you a promotion and pay raise if you came but when you get there you're given significantly more responsibility and the same pay, you would feel betrayed as well. What they need is regulation of these deals and official binding contracts so this cant happen.

He had all summer, all fall camp to work this out. Why didn't he say anything about this money until the third game of the season? He's responsible in this too.
