I used to be a bass fishing addict and won a few local tournaments, but tournament fishing is work and I always wanted my fishing to be fun. So I took up crappie fishing. I started tournament fishing for crappie and won several and had a reputation of a good crappie fisherman, but I soon fell into the trap of working to find fish for the next tournament and it finally dawned on my lightning quick mind that the fun of fishing was leaving me again. So I stopped tournament fishing, based on my age (82) and went back to fishing for fun. Bluegills, Shellcrackers, crappie, and the occasional bass or catfish that hits my lures. Tailwater fishing for Stripers, white bass, walleyes, and Drum has brought back the joy of fishing. Watching Eagles and ospreys and gulls working the same water that we fish is such a joy. Much better than watching a video screen and cheating at fishing. Let me ask you guys a question. Where is your joy?

Good advice Randy. Ive never fished tournaments so maybe that's why I've never gotten tired or burned out with bass fishing. Can't imagine life without it. Also when the bite is tough for me, I figure that's a good time to try a new lure or technique that I haven't tried before. 👍👍👍

I never feel disappointed coming in after a beautiful day on water. Ditch your cell phone for a couple of hours - 20 years ago you didn’t have one so take a vacation from worrying about something you have no control of for a couple of hours. Enjoy nature. Enjoy the sunshine and silence. Connect with Gods magnificent beauty.

The way I avoid burnout as an angler 1) no tournament fishing, comparison is the death of joy, the only angler I'm in competition with is myself, 2) don't focus exclusively on one type of fishing, be a multi-species angler, fish for what's biting best at any time of year, and 3) get back to basics. Find a handful of techniques that you enjoy and work for you in most situations and stick to them.

Great advice and it is nice to go through tackle boxes and reorganize and clean up everything, I do this when it gets really cold out. My tackle bags are always full of cut line (small pieces) because I there are times I don't have access to a trash can and it becomes one and it goes in there until I can clean it out. Thanks for a great video Randy!!

During wintertime and colder weather here, I shift from fishing into learning and certifications for work. It really makes me appreciate fishing when weather warms and as a bonus it normally translates into more fishing money and less stressors in my mind when I'm out there fishing 😃

Love your point about organizing tackle. I also find that very therapeutic. My mind wonders and often think about fish caught or trips when certain lures did well. Organizing tackle applies to your other comment about making fishing as easy as possible. You know where everything is in the boat instead of struggling to find something.

I fished every tournament I could back when i was in my late 20's to early 30's. Then i fished club tournaments in my late 30's to mid 40's. I hit that wall, burn out big time. I sold everything and then 15 years later I got back into fishing, then just a small club tournament now. I got tired of doing that and now I just fun fish. I find myself enjoying my time on the water and spending time away from the mass of humanity. I go fishing when I get up without a alarm. I fish as long as I want, 1 hour, 2 or how many I feel like to. I now have no predetermined number to say i was successful or not. I am successful when I just put the rod/reel in my hand and enjoy myself. I like this much more than I ever have.

It's the same thing you should do any time you get burned out with any activity . 1) step away completely for some period of time and do other things. 2) if after some time your interest starts to grow then before you jump back in reassess what you like and disliked about it and try to not do the same things you did before. If you can't bring yourself to step away which is the best way then you still need to take a hard honest look at what you like and don't like and try to focus on just the parts you like. I can't stand lots of other boats or tournaments or big bodies of water. Therefore I only fish small bodies, no tournaments and only during the week. I also don't care about 20 fish days of 2 lbers so I only fish where there are populations of big fish and specifically target them.

I had to let it go and turn the page as much as I hated to do it.

One of the recurring things I see that has people experience burn out is that they get wrapped up in all the secondary activities associated with something and lose sight of the primary reasons for doing whatever it is that they are doing. When I was a nationally ranked competitive shooter I would get asked all the time about my methodology for reloading. Guys were always surprised when I'd explain it was just: pick up free range brass, throw it in a tumbler for 1/2 hr, then reload it, done. They were shocked because some of them literally had these involved 12 step process' that would take them days just to get ready to load 100 rds. I'd laugh and say, "you guys love reloading, I just love to shoot". To avoid fishing burnout just go fishing and ignore everything else you hear about this activity. Forget tournaments, forget all the tackle and bait nonsense, ignore all the drama on YT about so called pro fishing since none it affects you. I'll I can go in 100 guys boats and see they have enough tackle and lures to last them the next 2 years without spending a penny except for gas. Simply your experience and you won't burn out ...

I mess with my tackle and gear all the time. I even go as far as to weigh lures to know what rod I can use them on. Some lures don't weigh what the label says they do. And I enjoy that. But what I do when I get tired of bass fishing, or the lack of catching fish, is to go lighter and smaller. I will pull out my ultralight gear and go fishing with smaller lures. I have done this while I was out fishing. I would just get tired of not catching anything. Go to the truck and pull out my ultralight. All of a sudden I notice I am having fun. And normally I will catch fish when I wasn't with my bass gear and lures. And yes I still catch bass. And sometimes big ones. And if you want fun. Catch a large bass on an ultralight with 2-4lb line. No flipping fish. No skimming them across the top of the water. But fighting that fish. Enjoying the battle between the two of you. Having to be patient and not just muscle them in. The fight is part of the enjoyment. Catching a 4 pound bass on 2 pound line can be so much more fun and rewarding than just muscling them in. I know some don't have the patience for this. And that is a shame because they are missing out on fun and rewarding times.

Great suggestions! I have way too much stuff and I need to stop buying the latest gimmick. Fishing from shore for a couple hours or fishing for panfish works.

Ditto for me at 69. It's always been me against the fish (thank God for that...) - just kidding, but I got to a point where I wanted to fish when I wanted to fish and where I wanted to fish. For me it's all about the process of fishing - getting ready, and rigging up 10-12 setups, loading the boat so I can get up early and be there for first light, and my day out fishing is always great! Sure, I want to catch fish, but the enjoyment of the process is satisfying enough cause the excitement doesn't end till I'm driving that boat back onto the trailer. Any fish I catch just serves to validate my approach. I'm retired so no more weekend warrior - I avoid weekends and go on weekdays which are not overly windy. Always trying to find new ways of catching them and fishing areas that I might have ruled out the past 20 years and many good surprises in that endeavor! Competition is fun and exciting, but I saw many friends who left bass fishing cause they couldn't make those very limited top weights. For my love of fishing, I got out of all the tournaments so my fate wouldn't end the same way. It's been over 10 years since I stopped regularly tournament fishing and I'm still like a kid in a pen knife store!
