Because he wanted to see if he could develop feelings for someone else since Yo keeps telling him she has no feelings for him. He tried, but it didn't work.

I don't know what Maki really expected from Ren...after all she practically threw herself and her vagina at him before he even had a chance to like her...this sort of desperation from a woman never works on men, at least not in my experience. Filling out a notebook on your marriage goals and squeezing someone to fit it is an epic fail also. At least Ren had the courage to stop the fake trial.
