Fabulous table. And don't let anyone bully you. The black is a personal choice and personally I think it looks amazing. Just because the nay-sayers wouldn't choose black doesn't make it wrong. If the client likes it, that's all that matters. I'm "borrowing" that folding / wrapping trick at some point. Keep it up.

That sandpaper and block clamping system on the legs was amazing. I always strugggle on glue ups so that’s a great trick to have learnt. The final table looks awesome. Very impressive build and video.

What an awesome project! I love the contrast between the black legs & the lighter top. I had a client that went the other way with a 12-person 1.5" thick hickory top on a single pedestal. The base was painted white while the top was GF water-based provincial, which on the hickory was really black. That contrast turned out to look amazing, just like this table. Thks for sharing.

@fantinwoodworking Yes, it was. It broke down to the base with the slides, which was 210 lb. Each of the 3 slabs was 98 lb each for a combined weight of 504 lb. I made a ladder out of 2" hickory that had 4 handles made into that bolted to the transition plate so 4 people could pick up and move. Then the ladder comes off & is stored, and then the rest of the slider mechanism goes on. I even had to build an overhead gantry crane 29 feet long by 13 feet wide to be able to build and move around the shop during construction, which took several months.

@fantinwoodworking It was an amazing feeling to see it in the clients home finished and ready to go. I was over there a few weeks ago looking at another custom desk build, and when I looked at the base, I had forgotten just how huge it was. It was 21" round, which then transitioned into interlocking feet. It was one of the coolest projects I've ever pulled off. The craziest was the forklift franken lathe I built to be able to trun the 148 lb piece of maple for the center of pedestal. That was a little intimidating, but figured with it spinning, it wouldn't flip over built onto the 8000 lb forklift. There was an intense amount of thinking that went into this build. The clients had tried for several years to find such a table, but it didn't exist until now. I've got tons of pictures and videos.

Great technique for beefing up edges and keeping down weight. I have a lot of 3/4” hardwood and have been trying to figure out how to glue up and make projects appear thicker.

Years ago I bought a really big Bessey F-clamp. I frequently use clamps for tight fitting joints by engaging the clamp with the screw handle below the table overhang, and tightening the clamp slightly (house wife tight) then tapping the top of the clamp with a soft mallet. Depending on the quality of the work sometimes a 2 pound brass hammer.

The algorithm gave me your channel on this chilly autumn morning. I love the table and I’m looking forward to binging more. We used to create dolly frames for our pipe organ consoles from ash. We sprayed them with black lacquer, and I’ve always loved that grainy look. If you don’t mind my asking, how cool do you keep your shop? I’m struggling with a home garage these days, for the first time in my fifty year career. It has no heat (yet) and it gets cold in the Hudson Valley 😊.

In this video, I didn’t have heating in my garage, and no real insulation but I live in the Seattle area, so not as cold as the Northeast, but could get pretty humid which makes it challenging. I have since moved to a new house and shop that does have insulation and a mini-split system so a lot more comfortable. I’m excited to have some new videos in the new shop :).

I like the black legs on the table. Did you use threaded inserts for the figure 8 connectors? I like your shop lift cart- and save that lazy Susan- I use mine for support when cutting large circles on my bandsaw.

@@dianeewoldt3035 thank you!! I screwed them directly, the screws are 5/8” wooden screws, so no need for inserts. There was 8 in total so the load is pretty well distributed. I did save the lazy Susan, I’ve already used it a couple times after :).

@@allsurf thanks. I tried a sample with red oak, pores are too open (a lot more “bleeding”), so I would need to fill the grain which wasn’t the look the client was looking for. And the red oak didn’t really turn out as close to the sample I needed to replicate as the white oak did…

Fair point but additional time is somewhat difficult to account for. You can be a hobbyist and the cost of time doesn't play a role. But for a 2 1/2" thick top, you'd need to get 12/4 stock, which you can't always find it, and it not only is a lot more expensive, the top would weigh a lot more than necessary.

Beautiful project, but as an old carpenter, there is a reason why tabletops on antique furniture is bigger than the apron. Wood new and old is always working and this top will do the same making it bigger and smaller than the apron killing that look of a thick table top. But hey thanks for sharing I enjoyed the video.

Not sure I understand your point. Wood moves, but both the top and the “lip” (it’s not an apron) are glued up in the same exact direction, so they will move together, staying exactly like it is when it was built… thanks for watching!
