Extreme parenting. That’s what I call what special needs parents do. But whatever your parenting journey is like, I don’t think anyone would argue that raising children, no matter how typical they are or not, is rife with questions, uncertainty, insecurity, and mistakes. Some days all we can do is hold on and hope to get through it without a major disaster. And some days it’s hard not to constantly hold your breath. I do think there is balance to be found, though.
One of the ways I find it is through remembering that every person who parents is doing a difficult job. We must forgive ourselves for not having every answer even when we think it’s our task to do so. We all are human and we learn as we go, right alongside our children.

Thank you so much for your upcoming book. I’m so touched by your caring, thoughtful words. My daughter doesn’t have autism; she has Down syndrome. She is 29 now, and everything you’ve said so far are things and thoughts I’ve had with her. I think this book is perfect for every parent, no matter if their child has a disability or not. I’ve been a fan of yours and Hayes for many years.
