Honestly I graduated from college this past may and NO ONE talks about post-grad life and how hard it is, going from school full time your whole life to nothing, navigating a shitty job market, and balancing this new life has been so hard! Its really crazy and can be really depressing

This video really dropped at the right time. I am currently a fashion design major at an art college, thinking about dropping out to pursue something entirely different and establish my own little business… coming from an Asian background as well, this is really scary… So hearing you talk about your experience felt extremely inspiring!!❤

this couldn't come at a better time i'm 28. when i was still fresh in uni, i got approached by 2 shops to start a tattoo apprenticeship (maybe 2014, 2015?), and i turned them down because of the things my parents said, and the impression that it was an unstable path. fast forward to this year and three 9-5 graphic design office jobs later, the industry is just as unpredictable... i quit my first job of 8+ years, got let go of job #2 after 3 months, found job #3 and got let go another 4 months later because there wasn't enough work to go around. i started emailing tattoo shops and got an apprenticeship, and am about to start this month! my parents are still against it because of many reasons (not just because of the stigma), but i know i'd regret it if i didn't try.

And this is why Jasmien is my absolute favourite vlogger. The honesty and genuineness is what makes Jasmien and her channel so compelling. I find it so comforting to watch her journey including the reality of being a student, the joys and frustrations, the mornings painting, the cats, the new hobbies, the ambition of being a tattoo apprentice, the friends and good food. I’ve loved every moment of your journey and it’s inspiring to see someone follow their passion.

I got tattooed by you back in a April. It was your gold fish design. I was a fan of you but I’m also super shy so I didn’t really say much or mentioned being a fan. But your art and journey has inspired me so much. I am currently a studio art major and have been debating going the tattoo route. Thank you for this video ❤

I’m currently in art school and just starting a tattoo apprenticeship. I started my own business last year after I had that “oh shoot what am I gonna do after I graduate?” Moment. I sell my own art and I really love working hard for it. I did two years of community college and it saved me so much money. Where I’m at, apprenticeships are so rare to find and unfortunately the tattoo industry isn’t a safe space for anyone who isn’t a white male, or they’re super old fashioned so this apprenticeship has been brutal so far. I hope I can get my degree next year and hopefully create my own place once my apprenticeship is over. Your YT channel really inspires that there is greener grass on the other side. You make me want to vlog my art school/apprenticeship and make content!

it makes me sad that we think college majors that aren’t “ideal” are a waste of time. let us be human beings. let us do what we enjoy. we have all the time in the damn world. lay off. i get it if school is expensive it’s harder but if u can afford it or manage to get scholarships/grants etc let yourself have fun. if anything pls don’t cut yourself off from what you enjoy. try not to at least

I felt every struggle you talked about with art school. I'm in my third year for fine arts, transferred to an actual university after getting my AA and general ed stuff out of the way at a community college. Even though Its only been one week of classes this sem, I feel so tired. Burnout is real. I love all the job/career opportunities I get with going to school, being around people like me, the ability to have real feedback on my work to gage progress, and having an accountability system to keep me on a track of growth and productivity. But the cons of art school you listed, burnout, cost, stress, etc, are all so real and draining. I do plan on finishing my degree since I only have a year left after this semester and I finally have all the boring classes out of the way, but the thought of dropping out has definitely crossed my mind many, many times. I think its awesome that you were able to get into tattooing and I've been following you for a while to see how successful its been for you, that's super admirable. Art school definitely isn't for everyone, but my parents really want me to get a bachelors degree and I have a very helpful scholarship paying for a majority of my tuition, so those two things definitely helped me decide to go to school. For anyone wondering if its right for them, just do a lot of research and ask yourself if you are willing to suffer a bit mentally, emotionally, and maybe even financially, in order to take advantage of those pros I listed. Art school is NOT easy, imo its one of the more intensive types of school to go to (and some of the professors can be extremely mean and toxic, please do research on your art profs before taking a class from them I cannot stress that enough). BUT the potential benefit of going to an art school may be completely worth it.

I’m really glad you found what made you happy. I’m 32 and pregnant and still trying to figure out wether or not I should go to university because I live in a place where direct art schools are not available unless I relocate, which I don’t have the funds for. I figured I would go just to build on my foundation as an artist and then start tattooing as well. My goal is mostly personal. Not necessarily to start an art career, but more to get better at art because creating is more fulfilling than anything else I’ve done and even if I don’t become a world renown artist at least I can have a career in or around the art world with an art degree 🤷🏽‍♀️ And there is always tattooing which I’ve been interested in for years, but haven’t had the guts to do because of my art skills.

This came at a good time. I've been really thinking about transferring so I can focus on the art I want to make and my current school doesn't fully offer that flexibility. I remember watching your videos surrounding the time you took a gap. After it seemed like you were on you feet, you looked happier than you were in school. I'm glad you were able to find your peace and what makes you happy. I don't feel like I am ready to enter the workforce yet, but your videos have always been helpful when I struggle with what I want to do. You figured it out, so I know that I will figure it out eventually to find what makes me happy. Also, the video quality doesn't matter since it fits the vibe of your usual sit down videos and the vibes of your channel. I always enjoy seeing your art and hopefully one day I could get one of your designs. Good luck this year, and take care!

Your videos are my source of inspiration for being "good at productivity". but seeing this video is very comforting. It's crazy to learn how similar your story is to mine and it makes me so happy that youre feeling better now :) I attended college for 3D animation for 5 semesters and even though I was miserable and knew that digital animation wasn't for me, I never really considered that there might be a way for me to find success without a college degree (as I was taught growing up). It was a huge step moving on from that nightmare, but after a few years now I'm in the field where I can be myself and I love it. Congrats on your current movements, you seem very happy and that truly is what life is all about. I see a lot of art school stories on KZbin talk about everything that Art school should have been and not about what it was or what one can expect when going there. I think you did a great job doing that here. I went to local college and graduated in 2015 with a minor in Graphic Design and a minor in Illustration. Girl. I HATE the graphic design community and my everything became my illustration career. The graphic design community is not for me, it's all hustle culture and passing the buck. It's also VERY clique-ish. I had to take the next year after graduation building up my Illustration portfolio and teaching myself how to market myself for freelance work and to seek out the things that I needed to know to sell myself and my work. They didn't teach us that in school, pretty much MOST of what I do today didn't require going back to school. At least on the plus side, I didn't spend an arm and a leg or get into debt learning that lesson.

I totally did the same one month ago. I dropped out of my art school (and i'm only 18) to be a tattoo artist. i already tattoo for two years, i'm a self-taught and i wanted to live from my passion. you are an exemple for me, but in france, finding a tattoo shop and tattooing in it, it's not really easy, especially when you are a self-taught tattoo artist, cause you're not seen as a "true" tattoo artist, like if you weren't legit to do this job. hope i'm going to find a safe place, or an apartment where i can create my own private tattoo shop

Omg jasmine im studying ceramics rn, I just turned 18 and I relate so much to you. What you said about art and how this one teacher changed your whole view on art. Now I’m not sure what I’m gonna do tho. I’m not so confident about ceramics as well

Thank you for this video Jasmien! I finished college in July 2022 and I have been strugling to find a path. I just accepted that I need a part-time job to buy materials to do sculpture and ceramics or even to save to a master's degree. Hope your dooing great! Hugs from Porto :)))

I really relate with a lot of this, I'm almost finishing my arts major and I don't have a clue on what to do next, I also am a tattoo artist and the studio that I'm in stays with 50% saying that others studios would keep more, which is insane, so I'm very happy that you did it, and got yourself in a healthier place, and I hope I can get there also 😊 p.s.: why there's not a single art school in the world that don't have cats

Decisions like that are hard. Personally stuck through art school but understand it’s not a prerequisite to make art. Good on you for committing to your choice!

This is exactly what I meant when I had to explain most people around me. I'm not angry about my degree, but I am not pleased either. I came from Portugal excited that I would take control of my choices and what not in UK. The Art degree in general was just not good. The expenses as students is over the top in order to succeced on a final. The amount of mental health issues that has caused to several students was insane. I graduate, and up to this day I'm drawing and seeking an apprenticeship, if i went back i would definitely take online painting and drawing courses.

I consider you lucky, I’m 4 years in to a 5 year degree with Asian parents as well. I thought the same thing about students taking gap years and didn’t “believe” in mental health but I was totally wrong. I wish I pulled out early like you and I give you props for speaking up early, me on the other hand I just hope I can pull through.

You're too elite to be confined in art school. I've followed you for awhile, you are the coolest chick... some of the smartest people i know did not finish school. And they easily stomp on anyone with degree papers in so many ways

After finishing 3 years in law, two law related diplomas, I made my parents proud but now I want to be a tattoo artist 😭 I'm almost done my art program and I'm terribly scared to confront my immigrant parents lol you helped ease my stress and have to go for what you love.

I think art school has an image of trying to impress people/one up the other person instead of doing your own thing, which is why it leads to splurging on material you can find cheaper. But then again the quality difference is very visible.
