Portsmouth might be the most charming New England town of all!
For this video, I drove through the beautiful seaside community of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. After a brief bit of clouds the day before, this day was spectacular, and as you’ll see, tons of people showed up from all over New England to take in the sun on a late winter day. It was on a Sunday, March 21, 2021 at about 2 in the afternoon.
Portsmouth is pretty much the only real somewhat large city along New Hampshire’s coast. Study after study call Portsmouth one of the best seaside communities in the country. It’s a vibrant place where you can shop and dine and feel safe. There’s only 20,000 people here, and the it was founded all the way back in 1653. Much of the downtown area we’ll explore has kept its historical vibe, but with a modern flare.
This is actually one of the coolest places I’ve visited. I think you’ll like it too.
While out and about in Portsmouth, I enjoyed a salmon dinner, which was so good I forgot to take a picture of it until I was almost finished. Here was the view from where I ate at - a place called River House. And no, they didn’t pay me to say that. I wish they did.

Funny enough, most of the architecture in Portsmouth was rebuilt in the mid 1800s after nearly the entire city burned down. Not once, not twice, but three times. Now you see a lot of these brick buildings in Portsmouth as a result.

New England feels like another country sometimes compared to the rest of the US … they have the old European architecture. They have very pro second amendment laws but not a lot of gun crime. Their politics feels very balanced and less hostile and partisan then other parts of the country. Their cities and towns are very walkable and have good public transit even in the small towns etc. It’s def a vibe I enjoy. A part of me would love to retire in one of these historic, small, peaceful and beautiful coastal towns. Thanks for the video 🤙🏼

Actually living there is the ultimate counterargument to wignatism. Spend a few years there and you'll be thinking about yeah it's nice, but the scuzz of passive aggressive atheists and woke bumpkins gets you thinking twice about race defining mortality shit. There are literally troon and queer flags like everywhere. Betting 5$ that both the Dems and lolberts would view an actual conservative or christian as hostile invader banding together to rawdog em. Literally come for the gun laws and that's it but even then there's better options. Think before ya move sort of deal

That’s my neck of the woods. Just outside of the Market Square area where he was, on the outskirts of downtown is some train tracks and a place that the locals as well as local police know as “tent alley” where the homeless “live”. Go 5 min out of Portsmouth to where the big box chain stores are and there are your panhandlers. There is also a big heroin problem here. Sometimes you’ll see them in market square but not on this day- more so in the summer. There are often artsy buskers in market square in the summer, too. Keep in mind- this was filmed in March, the off season. You should see it in July and August! I worked in the West End of Portsmouth for over 20 years. I finally got out because I didn’t feel safe. I live over the bridge in Maine. Edited to add- Portsmouth is a mix of the wealthy, the middle class, and the lower class. It has a very arty vibe and definitely has many good things as well as bad things. But bad things are everywhere.

San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, San Diego = Homeless Capital of the World. Unpleasant experiences, unpleasant smells, unpleasant people, trust me. I live here and it sucks. The homeless population over the years have become extremely violent, starting fights at malls, causing wildfires in the middle of summer where people who work end up losing their homes. Not to mention we have some pretty stupid liberals who love being taxed to death. My city voted for nearly 10 cent tax hike for basically nothing but lining politicians pockets. Liberals have completely destroyed California and the violent homeless crowd have been causing businesses to close early, close down, or leave the state altogether. In about a year, this place will be worse than the slums of Brazil and India.

My lifelong home and still my favorite town in the world, thousands of nights and days just spent taking in the atmosphere here. So many days were spent in Market Square, sitting on Breaking New Grounds green tables/chairs on the corner, or inside at a widow seat. Listening to the faint bustle of the people entangled with the birds chirping, the Piscatiqua river breeze blowing gently. Nothing like it.

@@BagladyNH I can't argue with you there. When all of you local staples started leaving in favor of more touristy favorable options, I really started to feel like the city cared less about its residents and more about the tourism industry. You are lucky. Most of America is a literal 3rd world automobile slum. Where you have to drive and drive to do anything. Even if you live in 'the city'. On top of that, most american cities are dangerous, and infested with crime and poverty and homelessness. And because of that, very few places in America have any real sense of community. Because of the crime, people are suspicious of each other and tend to be withdrawn and not open, and secondly, why would anyone care about a crappy generic strip mall, target, or walmart, or ?

Things to know.... Take Route 1B to island hop between North Rye and Portsmouth. 1B puts you right in the heart of Portsmouth's waterfront near Strawberry Banke and the town garden. Interstate 95 out of Maine is a nightmare most days. If you pick it up a little further down in NH it's a bit better. Check out the USS Albacore in Portsmouth. It's a submarine but it's on land as a museum and you can walk thru it. A short ride up Route 1 in Maine to York is Nubble Lighthouse, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the US and a common site for scuba divers. I've dived there a many times. Just offshore from Portsmouth is the Isle of Shoals which is home to a large population of seals which people scuba dive with. About Route 1 in general. It's fine in Maine and NH but the moment you cross into Mass, it becomes nothing short of a disgrace. I've been on smoother motocross tracks. If you are doing a day trip up and down the coast- save your suspension and use I-95 in Mass.

I grew up on the Seacoast in NH about 15 min from Portsmouth. It’s # 1 in NH for me. I’ve got a lot of love for the place. Kind of a low key gem of a town. Whenever people from out of the area have visited they always seem to love Portsmouth, and when I’m asked what town I would recommend going to in NH it’s Portsmouth with a drive down Rte 1A through Newcastle, Rye, N. Hampton, Hampton and then over the MA border down to Newburyport. That 30-40 min route is prime time, particularly in the summer.

@nick lots of condos going in changing the appearance, the traffic gets worse every year, road construction that lasts for years. I’m sure the original commenter would agree. Nice video I miss living there compared to being in Honolulu. Yup snow is more fun. I wish you went over to pierce island to show the lobster and fishing boats. State street saloon that isn't on state Street anymore( that was the boarded up building after the North Church it caught on fire so they moved locations) but they have biggest and cheapest lobster roll on the seacoast. Also great bar with great atmosphere and people. I enjoy your videos keep up the good work

Great to see familiar streets I drive through every day on KZbin! You had me puzzled for a bit, until I read the description that said the video was taken back in March, because now a number of street lanes (and available parking spots) are taken up by outside seating and/or construction. You captured nicely the beautiful cloudless blue skies we get here. If you come back, get video of some of the historic sites, of which there are many!😃

What a shame. When I see a lovely little town like this, it pains me to think about how they trashed the rest of America and its cities with bad architecture and terrible urban design. This town looks like any charming little town you might find in the UK. Its lively, people are walking, out-and-about, and feel safe. The rest of America is pretty much a suburban automobile slum.

@@NickJohnson I suggest a drive around the Monadanock Region along Route 101. Towns like Dublin are the picture of small New England village. Dublin has a very nice lake that is often used to teach new scuba divers. We traditionally took students to the Dublin General Store for a handmade sandwich for lunch afterwards. If you take a right out of Dublin towards Harrisville there are old brick mill buildings that are well over 100 years old and still used. But no clay around so imagine getting millions of bricks up there before paved roads. All along that area are mountain lakes with good fishing and beautiful views. Nelson is home to Lake Nubanusit which is stunningly beautiful and is home to a family of eagles that I see everytime I go there. The water is unusually clear and the lake is actually rather deep. Lots of state parks north of 101 in that area. Miller State Park and the trailhead for Mt Monadanock is right on 101. Greenfield State Park is just north of Peterborough as well. There are covered bridges out in that area as well for photo ops. 101 cuts right across NH east-west but it's really pretty out west past Milford all the way to Keene and the VT border. Also-- Squam Lake in the north lakes region. That is where On Golden Pond was filmed. Gorgeous lake, there is a tourist boat and a dockside diner with more parking in the water than on the street. Almost right across the street is a nature preserve that is well worth going to. Lots of animals but unlike a zoo it's a very natural setting. If you're in the Lakes Region you can also hit Weir's Beach easily which is where Laconia Bike Week is held. Oldest bike rally in the US.
