Very interesting tour. My great-grandfather built a house on Garland Street in 1904. My grandfather (6 years old at the time) helped him out, even losing a screwdriver inside the front porch. That house is still standing but looks shabby and in need of a lot of love. Grandpa told me stories about his father, a postal carrier who would hitch up his horse and wagon or sleigh to deliver mail in the neighborhood you drove through. This was small-town Flint, about when Buick first came to town, and my grandfather wrote many stories about his growing-up in a quiet-then-exciting era for Flint. It's really heartbreaking to see how the city has deteriorated. Flint and its residents didn't deserve the neglect and poor treatment they received. It's a clear warning to us all.

I have to ask what was the address? My home was built in 1904 with a land contract from the 1890s. if so please tell me it was 1409.... would be awesome to know someone who loved that house.
@dangibsononkpam2 жыл бұрын
@@TTLDNS Our house was 1203, a couple of blocks south of yours. My great-grandparents paid $250 for the corner lot and $200 for the inside lot next to it. After the house, barn and chicken coop were built, my great-grandfather dug a well behind the house. In the meantime, the family carried water pails from two neighbors' wells nearby, but found that the well water from the Detroit (MLK) Street neighbor had a "peculiar taste", as Grandpa remembered, rumored at the time to be from the drive-well pipes reaching into the coal beds underground. Water problem even back in 1904.

Some people actually fish in the Flint river which is crazy to me. I love that a lot of the abandon houses and buildings were torn down. Thanks. Interesting video. I was born at St Joseph's Hospital in Flint. Ages 0-5 was on Dakota St. Ages 5-17 I grew up on Parkway (2 streets north of Pierson Rd) between Dupont St and Detroit St (now MLK St) behind the North Flint, Plaza. I went to Kindergarten at Pierson Elementary (I think that's gone now). Grades 1-8 at St Agnes Elementary and Jr Hight (that is still standing but was abandoned and in shambles), then Grades 9-12 at Powers High School on Carpenter Rd (and Powers abandoned that building too). I was hoping you'd have footage and of the Northside of Flint. Maybe next time. I left Flint in 1976 at age 18 when I joined the Air Force. I think growing up in Flint hardened me some, but I would not live in Flint again. Crime was so bad in Flint on the Northside that I moved. Also Powers HS was a magnet for drug use. I last visited Flint in the Spring of 2018. My father and grandparents worked at AC Spark Plug in Flint - a huge facility - that is no longer there.

Thank you very much. Even the music was pleasant. It's been 36 years since I've been back there. It was never a pretty town even in its heyday, but it was home. In 79, Flint was the 8th richest city in the nation per capita with an average annual salary being $19k.You'd never have known it then. Supposedly Flint was so bad in the 70's that the Carter administration was thinking about nationalizing the city of Flint and using it as a model city because it had all the problems of major cities. Well, that's how the story goes anyway. Even its mayor had ties to the mafia.

Flint used to be a nice town when GM was there paying the community fair wages. GM used to be called Generous Motors, after all the strikes from the 20s - 30s. It's a shame that Flint has been sliding down, and has been suffering from bad water. But many towns in US are having the same problem. It's the duality of life. You have the bad, so you can appreciate good. Why does this happen to our cities?
@shawnwhalen83143 жыл бұрын
Not as bad as it used to be, cleaned up alot. Great Smallmouth bass and walleye fishing in the Flint river! The river is not as polluted as people think. You can do this in any big city in the Midwest/ rustbelt..not just Flint. And we in America like to think we are the greatest country in the world? We have 3rd world conditions in almost every city in the U.S....its SAD. I grew up in Detroit in the 70's so I've seen bad. I do alot of fishing in the rivers around the area, some parts of south Saginaw are bad....it surprised me. No jobs and not alot of hope...hard to stay positive and stay on the right path.

Nick, can you do this in more cities across the US? Next time do Hearne Texas. It’s a small podunk town north of college station. The biggest employer there is GATX.
@NickJohnson5 жыл бұрын
hey oscar! i could but i don't think it's THAT interesting? isn't GATX an investment company? what's wrong with that? if walmart were the biggest employer, that would be bad. wondering what you meant.
@oscarlinares8415 жыл бұрын
Nick Johnson lol. Your video reminded me of that town when I used to work for that company. GATX is actually a leasing company for tank cars and other rail cars. They have a repair shop there which is one of the biggest in the country. It’s a small little town which a lot of people would tell me not to roam around in. I didn’t think it was that bad of a town although I didn’t check the stats for crime or education as you do in detail. It’s just a thought since I think your videos of driving around different towns in the US would be interesting to watch.

Born and raised in Flint during the 60s and 70s. Public school was like a war zone back then on the north side. Lots of racial strife. Teachers got beaten during riots. It was total chaos at times. I remember when MLK got shot. I thought I was going to get killed at school because I was white (in the minority at my school.) It was the start of White flight to Flushing, Davison, Grand Blanc and other near-by towns.

You didn't point out any of the beautiful murals painted throughout the entire video. The historical churches. I can take you to what is considered good middle class neighborhoods in Westminster Colorado and half the yards and houses look rundown. Destroyed wooden fences, junk in the yards.
