Christian or not, I’m sure you’ve heard the story of Jesus being born to the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem.
However, this wasn’t the true ‘birth’ of Jesus. In Christian doctrine, Jesus is also regarded as eternal, meaning he existed before time and creation.
In this video, I’m going to explain exactly what that means, where Jesus was before the creation of the world, and more:
The Pre-Existence of Christ
Scriptural Affirmations
John 1:1-2 reads: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning."
These verses from the Gospel of John affirm the existence of Jesus, referred to as 'the Word,' as being with God from the very beginning, indicating His pre-existence before the creation of the world.
Theological Interpretations
I also want to talk about the doctrine of the Trinity, which holds that Jesus (the Son), God (the Father), and the Holy Spirit are three distinct persons but one in essence, which also supports the belief in Jesus' pre-existence.
Jesus in Old Testament References
Foreshadowing and Appearances
Micah 5:2 reads: "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."
This prophecy indicates the eternal nature of the Messiah, who Christians believe is Jesus.
Theophanies: Pre-Incarnate Appearances
In addition to this, instances in the Old Testament, such as the appearance of the 'Angel of the Lord,' are sometimes interpreted by Christian theologians as pre-incarnate appearances of Jesus.
Jesus and the Creation of the World
His Role in Creation
Colossians 1:16 reads: "For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him."
This verse speaks directly to Jesus' active role in the creation of the world, further emphasizing His pre-existence and divine nature.
Taking into account all these biblical references, we know that Jesus Christ existed before the creation of the world - and for me, this opens up profound theological insights into His divine nature and eternal presence.
From the affirmations of Scripture to the theological interpretations that have emerged over centuries, it becomes clear that Jesus' existence transcends time and space, rooted in the very essence of divinity.
