I believe the reason why the light is consumed. Is because of the fact that. The game is having a hard time updating the lighting around you as. . Well. It's trying to load lighting that you can't see. So as the game detects "Hey! There's incorrect lighting." It begins to rapidly consume the light. Which is why the light slowly faded. And it is also why torches only create one block of light now. It's because the game has now fully updated the lighting system to what it "Should" be after seeing your lighting settings.
