Ive been reporting and reporting these such apps for months after seeing them, the listings jumped out at me as being odd. I even showed interest a few times to work out the scam and i contacted the genuine sellers when i found the real listing usually on auto trader. I would love to know if me reporting all those ads is having any effect.

The greatest part of this video to me is how well Porsche club UK stepped up and worked out the scam on their own. The man in video is a credit to the culture of the club and his passion for the brand. Both Porsche UK and Porsche HQ in Germany own that man a beer . He stepped up to protect the brand and the client. Totally impressed . There are a lot of us who want a Porsche so bad we won’t see the scam in progress . He was just awesome and saved the day. People generally aren't in the business of giving hand outs to strangers, so something selling for a fraction of the market value with no obvious flaws, you better believe its a scam!

It's the oldest trick in the book. Scammers are taking advantage of people greed. And greed makes you blind. If you know the car X is worth 30k and you find an advert for 15k, you don't ask yourself what's the catch? No, because you think you're so smart and only YOU found that good deal, everyone else is a sucker. This is how scammers burn you. With greed and FOMO (fear of missing out)

Sure they sold him the car, but just hours after purchasing it, it went from having 0 fault codes to showing signs of needing some very costly repairs. And more and more cropped up. Never underestimate scammers. Even if you see the car in-person, you absolutely still can get scammed for the entire sum you paid for the car.

This is why I buy cars from dealerships near where I live. It's hard to take my second most expensive purchase for it to be lost to fraudsters. You pay a little extra, but the safety net of even a stolen car, you get covered. Dealerships don't want a reputation selling stolen cars. Great idea at the end of a video call. A truthful person would have the call knowing it's a large purchase for the customer.

I’m 29 very tech savvy been using the internet for 15 years. Was looking for a cheap work car, was getting desperate as I was using my girlfriends at the time. Found one on marketplace close by. Messaged the seller, said I would buy cash the same day. He said he wanted 200 deposit and lots of people wanted to buy it. He had no profile and I almost committed out of desperation. I didn’t and found a legit sale. If he’d of asked for 50 I would have probably done it. Does that 10 times a day 500 easy quid. I had a short argument calling him an obv scammer and he admitted it. Fair play to the fella i guess, lots of suckers out there

Fantastic. These scams stick out like a sore thumb to me. In fact, I'm currently compiling a list of all the Facebook scams I come across. The obvious one where cars are for sale that sound too good to be true, I click on the sellers name to see what else they're selling. From there, you'll see a list of goods at ridiculous prices.

Excellent explanation. Like you I was ‘so close’ to falling foul of a scam. Cleverly the scammer said the car was sold and buyer arranging collection from other end of country. I said no probs and left it saying if he got let down, to give me a shout. Day later the conversation restarted and because he’d been messed about, a small deposit would secure. I asked for pic of log book trying to be careful. It turned up and thought great. Last check I made was to run the number plate directly into Google. Shock horror, car appeared on website where pics had been copied…..including log book! More story detail that made in convincing. Media was Gumtree. All I could do was report it. Burner phone used. I spoke to guy that was clearly within UK. It is easy to see how people get caught out. Well done Mark for raising profile of problem.

When Covid stopped people travelling to or from Wales I bought an Audi from an Audi dealership outside my area. After speaking to a sales person I did check the car pictures were real and also the bank details of where I had to send my money. Just always check and then check again. Buying online can be dangerous so always ask to see the car live via video call. One recent request to see a Porsche at a main dealer on the other side of the UK was brilliant as the video was personalised showing the exact details I wanted to see along with commentary. Always ask to see inside the car so it is real and not just someone videoing a car at a dealership.

Hi Mark, I import cars on the side and what you should definitely do is import them through a business using an import LC (letter of credit) this is when the banks take control of the transaction and guarantee both sides that they won't be scammed. Basically the way it works is when you and a seller agree on a price instead of sending money to them you send all the money to your bank which take control of the transaction and make the seller send all the necessary documents to prove the vehicle has been shipped and only when it is on the boat will the banks send the money. It is a brilliant and cheap way of doing this which means you CAN'T get scammed!!!! Only thing the banks won't do is guarantee quality but if you get a 3rd party inspection it shouldn't be an issue. Hope this helps :)

Absolutely agree with you mark if your spending that amount of money stand in front of the car before handing the money over. It’s bl**dy frightening how these scammers operate. That’s why I personally would not buy a car with out seeing it face to face. Even from a franchised dealer I would still won’t to see the car. And if your buying from abroad get on a plane yourselves £1,500 for a flight is nothing compared to what you could loose as you video shows. I tried to bait these scammers in saying “I’ll pay for it now, can you send me your details”, and they all came back with the same “bot” answer of “email this”. Equally, I reported all the FB and got shadowbanned for multiple fake reports.

I’ve just put a 5k deposit down on a Mercedes from facebook and had no issues at all. Got a great deal aswell because the blinker fluid needs changing. Should be delivered any day now ☺️😇

The reality to this is that you are willing to pay for a car worth a quarter of a million pounds, but do not feel that a personal visit, costing you the price of a return ticket to the States🙄, would fully resolve the matter.

Facebook is the absolute last place I would buy anything from. Meta should just stick to being a social platform and not try and be everyone and everything. As for people looking to purchase a car, just stick to dealers with a physical presence and a good reputation . And of course, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. glad you didnt get scammed but a good way to protect yourself is tell them since you are not able to be there in person that you are sending an independent inspector to check out car if its a scam they will make excuses. but it is not a bad idea you can do to usually get one at a reasonable price and get it done quickly
