Howdy 🙋🏽♂️ I actually just responded to you on Instagram (I'm on holiday at the moment, so I'm a bit slow haha) but I'll shorten what I've already said just for anyone else reading this. Your parents are gonna find out anyway and generally you'd think they'd be supportive of you regardless of the outcome, as long as you're all certain that this is the right thing for you and that you'll smash it next time. Unless they're paying for everything, this doesn't really have a negative affect on them and there's nothing you can do now but try again if you want to stay in uni, so to avoid a sticky situation later I'd suggest you tell them now and see how they can support you (and how you can support them!).

Failure gives you an opportunity to show how bad you want something. It's hard to be honest with yourself, hence why most people choose to live in a fantasy-land -so well done. I'm currently a Mechanical Engineering Student in my Final Year, and the best piece of advice I can give you is to suffocate the bullshit. Other people tend to be the first to say that they're not struggling, but it turns out that most of them are just kidding themselves due to insecurities.

I've failed so much at this point that I'm literally fine with dropping out of uni. And for fs, I got into the top uni in the country. I have a tradie job to go back to in my home country town, but the only thing keeping me from dropping out is that my girlfriend whom I love soooooo much is here in this city. If I move back home, I'll be hours and hours away from her. We'd be forced to split. And I can't do that. What we have is unlike anything else. With her, I can be anything I want. I'd work at Maccas for my whole life if it means being with her. But no standard job in this city will allow me to financially stay here with her. I'm so lost.

Thank you for your honesty in this video. I'm currently repeating second year of Software Engineering, having been pushed into doing it by everyone around me, my mother wanting me to move out and my college pushing the idea of University. I absolutely hate the degree and it doesn't interest me. I love computers but I have zero interest in designing software and coding, it's not my area of interest. I've suffered greatly with a lot of trauma and mental struggles throughout my life and it's all just crumbling on me. I genuinely wish I had the chance to choose something else to do with my life, maybe an apprenticeship or something. I'm nervous about the disappointed look on my families face once again. Shit's really rough.
@jordanebert33132 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you're having to go through that. While it's easier said than done, I seriously think it's worth either changing your degree (perhaps to one with a year in industry, somewhat simulating an apprenticeship) or dropping out entirely. I think there's a lot of pressure on young people to attend university when truthfully it's not a big deal and most of us will be fine without it! Assuming you only have a year left, I could also be worth just seeing it as a job - work hard during the day for the chance to live in a new city, go out with friends and enjoy student culture. It's tough admittedly and I myself haven't figured it all out yet, but it's important to recognise that 3/4 years at uni is a relatively short period of time, though we should still try and enjoy it! Having tried therapy I can also recommend that. It's not for everyone, but it can be handy having some form of paper trail at uni when it comes to asking for extensions etc

I very stupidly only told 1 staff member about my issues and didnt do anything much else. Now Im petrified Ill be kicked out of Uni. I need to continue my studies in some way shape or form. I really am hoping and praying and begging God to give me another chance. If I get this repeat year I know my mental health issues will finally be resolved insha'Allah after 6 years. Alhamdulillah Ive already started accessing help, and insha'Allah Ill get a therapist and psychiatrist really soon.

May God grant it to me. I will be SO grateful if he does. insha'Allah.

I'm so sorry to hear that! Having to apply to resit is a bit unusual, if possible I would try and speak to some mental health/counseling service at uni and using that as leverage to support your application, otherwise it's going to be a bit of a barrier proving you were disadvantaged. Otherwise it's good to hear that you're getting better, though I'd try not to tie that to your studies. Obviously I'm no therapist but whether you complete university or not shouldn't influence your mental health, I'd try and see it as an opportunity whatever happens - just make sure you make the most of it! Best of luck though, hopefully it doesn't come to that and you can bag that degree 🤝🏽

@jordanebert33132 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that the year isn't going your way! I'd strongly advise you to speak to your tutors or supervisors about what you're going through - I know it's not ideal to share your experiences with academics at times, but they're there to help and support you and won't be able to do that if you don't tell anyone! If you've only failed those two modules, it's likely you'll be able to retake them in the summer which isn't a bad alternative, as you'll have two more months to prep. Personally, I think the jump from year 13 to first year is the hardest, as there's so much to deal with outside of your academics, so I wouldn't feel too bad about not having a great year - I hope you can trust me when I say you're not the only one to feel this way! It's unlikely your uni will kick you out, especially if you speak to someone and can submit an extenuating circumstances form about your struggles. Retaking the year isn't too bad of an alternative either, as you'll have plenty of time to work on yourself and figure out what you want from the year & beyond :) Feel free to reach out if you wanna talk through anything though! Best of luck with the rest of your exams otherwise!

I'd use COVID as a means to get extensions on any work you're behind on, then focus on catching up and passing later on, simply passing is enough in first year Otherwise, it may be worth speaking with your tutor and seeing what can be arranged, be it extensions or additional classes to catch up! Worst case, retaking a year isn't a bad thing at all, just use the extra time as an opportunity for growth - maybe start your own KZbin channel haha. Best of luck either way!

I’m currently in a situation where I just feel really terrified and depressed and I had pretty much the same experience as you, only having 3 days between national exams and university because my parents forbid me to have a Gap year I’m one of the people who did wonderful in high school, although my parents’ expectations are huge, I could still deal with it. I feel like I was forced to go straight to uni, forced to pick the specific subject, and the expectations and my parents bragging to everyone they know is killing my passion for studying After my exam today, I have a huge sinking feeling that I will fail and will have to repeat the first year at the first semester... I have no idea how to react if I do fail, how to break the news... How did you break the news to your family?
@jordanebert33134 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks so much for reaching out! I'm sorry you've been through such a challenging situation. I honestly didn't tell my parents right away as I was scared they wouldn't understand, although when I eventually told them, they were very supportive and understanding. The truth is that all parents will react differently and I don't know what's the best short term solution for you, but I honestly feel that, long term, you'll need to have a conversation with them about what it is that you really want. It's better for you to "disappoint" your parents now and be happy in the long run than to play their game and hate them when you're older. To answer your question, I think I just told my mum the truth when I felt the time was right - ie when I was confident about what I was going to do next. I think the worst thing would have been for me to tell my parents that I had failed and then to follow up with that I had no obvious plan as to what I was going to do next, whether that be to retake, drop out or otherwise. I hope that helps! I wish you the best of luck with whatever option you choose to take 💪🏽 Here are two videos that I've recommended in the past: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnm1l2OwmqeNa5o kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZ-0oamersamhKs

It's tough to give specific advice without context but I assume you'll get to resit individual modules sometime in August/September, it's definitely worth working towards resits so you can progress to second year. Otherwise, you should just be automatically enrolled to resit the modules you failed in a supplementary resit year which SFE will fund if you make sure to re-apply changing your year of study & tuition fee amount

well I failed my first year at art uni, haven't told anyone yet a part from my partner . It is so frustrating , I hated uni and I feel I don't understand the briefs and teachers always brushing me away when I need help and blame it on my bad english..I really have no idea if I ever able to finish uni and feel so disappointed. I am 25 soon and don't have much time to put into gap years anymore and I a;ready had to took gap year for college in the past as they didn't accept me for next year at the time due to failed english GCSEs which I reset 4 times till I eventually got a pass...I'm just retarded but I'm good at art lol

However, there's a lot to lose in the event your family find out the wrong way... Otherwise, go to your faculty or the next best person of authority, should as your head lecturer or head of faculty. It helps to use emails as a form of paper trail, but I would alway meet up (or call, given COVID) where possible. Did you fail all assignments and exams or just one module in your first year ? Is that reason you failed your first year ?
@jordanebert33132 жыл бұрын
I think I failed 5 modules totalling around 60 credits. In Bristol we have to take 120 credits (or 130 at most) and you can retake up to 20 credits worth in the summer I think, they usually don't allow you to resit more than 40 credits as it'd be a lot of work, so I had to retake the year to complete the additional credits. The academic year has two terms (or 'teaching blocks') where modules are typically split between 10 (taught in one term) and 20 (taught in both terms) credits so you can imagine I had between 3 and 5 assessments (exams and coursework) to resit in the summer, which wasn't feasible and hence, I had to retake those modules in the following year

I'm sorry to hear that you think you failed one, hopefully your results are better than you expect! Most uni's allow you to resit exams in the summer, so you'll have another chance if things don't work out this time. You'll only have to resit the year if, 1) you fail the summer resits, or 2) you fail too many exams and can't resit in the summer at all. I'd check with my tutor/faculty to see the specific rules though

@jordanebert33134 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the uni. If the two units are core then you won't be able to progress without passing, so you'll have to retake just those ones during the year. If they're optional, you may be able to resit them next year during your second year, but obviously that means you'll have more work to do

What happens if I fail the exams in the first semester? Do I get to resit ? And If I fail the resit do I have to redo the year ?
@jordanebert33135 жыл бұрын
This generally varies from uni to uni and from unit to unit, and it depends on many factors. For me, failing in the first semester (TB1) would mean a summer retake in the standard retake period (late August/ Early September). Failing to pass again would mean either retaking that module with or without teaching (ie paying for lectures or just the exam) for the following year, which means after that January exam I'd basically be doing nothing. An alternative would be to continue on to the following year while having to complete that unit in the new year, but this usually only applies if the module failed is optional

If I'm completely honest the uni you choose doesn't have too much of an impact on your career if you're naturally hardworking and curious anyway, but picking the right uni is definitely a big step. In STEM a degree is definitely useful and I'll never deny that, but it's not essential, not anymore.

@@jordanebert3313 Bro, this is different though. The entire job market is based upon skills/experience yeah you're right. This is the same for nearly every job, except for Medicine, Dentistry, Law. So a degree does help. Plus it's for nearly all companies.
