My friend and mentor, David West, issued a challenge to his viewers, how fast can you ignite a tinder bundle with flint and steel? Well . . . I failed. Ha
Like I say in the video. When you fail against the master, it is not that bad. It is expected. Maybe next time David.

😂🤣😂This was great Joe!!! If you're all prepped and ready as soon as you start that camera Murphy comes up and takes a bite out of your plans!! I say you just call that first attempt a Mulligan, especially since attempt 2 was a blazing success!! Thanks for the good laugh!!🪱🪱🪱

great effort mate, a few suggestions if I may, add in extra char cloth after you ignite the first piece, this adds extra heat to the bundle and speeds up the process. I use pocket bellows to concentrate my breath, again to speed up the process.

Joe we all saw the smoke the first time around; it wasn't a complete fail. You are hard on yourself and I certainly know what you mean about that darn camera. Any other time and when nobody is around smooth as a hot knife through butter! Life is like that I guess. I love your videos. Survivor's! Lol You're funny Joe! Well you made a beautiful fire 🔥 👍🏻👍🏻👌🙂🧡💚

I have found with cheesecloth char and palm hasks, from ignition to flame I can do it in under 30 seconds, palm husks require little to no prep and cheesecloth char is by far the fastest char I have found for getting a tinder bundle to flame.

Excellent demo! It's great to show the mistakes in videos so people know the reality. I think you succeed because you still got fire quite easily🔥🔥🔥

This was a wonderful and relaxing video, sir. And all's well that ends well, certainly! Do you ever use the processed bark of a dead tulip poplar tree, by chance? This material is gold, to me, but the tulip poplar is very common, in my neck of the woods. 👍👍
@joesoutdoorplaces
@joesoutdoorplaces 6 ай бұрын
What I would not do to have tulip poplar grow in my area. Or birch. Or chaga. Nothing of fire making value can be found growing naturally in Louisiana that has fire making value. Pine. That’s about it. As far as trees similar to poplar, there is willow and black cherry. But they are not too common where I hike. But to be fair, I haven’t really done a lot of research on anything else. But if you have tulip poplar, I am jealous for sure. Thanks for watching and for your kind comment.

@@joesoutdoorplaces I thought your accent sounded familiar. I've lived my whole life in Georgia, but my mom and her family are from Louisiana, so I have some of my best childhood memories there. 🙂 As for the dearth of fire making materials, I feel for you, indeed. I reckon you have fatwood and... also cattails, aye? If only a man could make fire from humidity and insects...
@joesoutdoorplaces
@joesoutdoorplaces 6 ай бұрын
Ain’t that the truth. I’m planning to do some things with cattails as well as hoof fungus. I don’t have the thick fungus here but it will still work. I’m working on a natural material for nitrating them. I’m hoping it works out.
