Well if that’s the case remember I don’t think that the teenager would’ve planned on doing something like that that means that her mother did that and is teaching her how to basically rip people off which is really messed up to teach a teenager. I’m guessing they didn’t show up for the hair appointment either because they probably saw some KZbin tutorial or something about how to put the clip in extensions in so no longer needed help doing that either.

Deposits deposits deposits! Always take a deposit, that way if they cancel or no show you get something out of it, Especially for event hair and makeup, ask 50% down. The cancellation fee never works in my experience, they’ll most likely never come again and won’t pay it unfortunately.

I HATE when people act like licensed professionals are the same as a family member with one palette or hot iron. Saying "oh yeah my sister offered so you're off the hook!" is treating someone like they're doing you a favor, not that you respect their time and experience as a professional. as you explained, there is a lot that goes into booking an appointment and getting the materials for appointments and people don't understand that. love this series and all the lessons you teach not only people in the beauty industry but also clients who may not understand why their actions upset us so much.

I feel this on a spiritual level. I'm a freelance artist and I let someone burn me only once by letting them pay me after I finished their commission, only to never get paid, and it put me over. That shit was 10+ hours of my time that I could've spent on another client and now I'm out $140 and stuck with this painting that I don't want and can't resell. Now I won't even draw up a sketch or look at reference photos without money up front.

I loved the ending message to this video. As a hairstylist I can relate completely. Setting boundaries is so important so you won’t get burned out. One small change I have made is not responding to clients in the evening and on Sundays. It has been hard to not give in on my hours coming back from quarantine because there’s so many clients needing to get in but I have been back to work for 7-8 weeks now on my regular days and regular hours. That alone has had me burned out so thank God I didn’t give in and completely overwork myself. This was my favorite video thus far. Thank you Sam!!
@sadiesheep4 жыл бұрын
One way I’ve had clients walk all over me is when they come in and rush me through the appointment because they have somewhere to be. If you don’t have time for the full process, don’t come in. If you are getting a full color service (balayage/highlights) those processes just can’t be rushed. I had this girl who rushed me through last time, was super rude and disrespectful to me and then complained it looked messy at the end and then came in 3 weeks later for a redo and started rushing me again and I just had to take control of the situation and not let her dictate how I do my job. She ended up loving her hair second time around but that’s 100% a client that may need to be broken up with. Even people that I really like who do this I have just had to tell them it’s not working out.

It’s really insane the way you get treated by certain clients. I have learned so much from me being “too nice” cause it’s def one of my worst qualities when it comes to work. I feel like I could write a book on how I’ve been treated by not ideal clients. We really do have to develop hard shells and a good set of boundaries like you said. I feel like so many of us beauty professionals are people pleasers and can get walked over. Thanks! Love your videos, new subscriber ✌🏻✌🏻

What you said at the end of the video about being taken advantage of and hating your work really spoke to me! I used to work at my old dance studio and the first year I loved it and was really good at it! I worked there for less than three years and as that time went on, my boss started taking advantage of me. She would ask me to come in on days off, ask me to CANCEL PLANS to come in when there were 3 other workers she could ask, I would leave my full time job to fill an hour for her here and there. Eventually I got let go but I'm so much better off because I was on the verge of quitting anyway. I wasn't happy there and I actually ended up taking it out on the customers which isn't fair.

I know I’m a week late, but I love this video!! The whole time I was thinking of all the things you said at the end!!! I did hair for 11 yrs and spent the beginning of it just like you said. Making exceptions and being taken advantage of. NOPE these people don’t have the same morals as us, they don’t care that you came in on your day off ect. The only one who can look out for you is you! I also had to set these boundaries with friends, who seemed to assume it was fun for me to do their hair on the weekends for a very minimal price, or liked giving them free consultations constantly on my day off that they were never going to do anything w that info I wasted my breath on. I’m so happy you are sharing this w other new and young stylists!!! I wish I would have had someone like you to tell me, or point it out back then. I had to learn for myself as well. I was very resentful and miserable. Thanks for all your hard work, I always love your videos.

I had this happen with an extension model when I was trying to get licensed for fusion. I paid out of pocket for the extensions because I was having such a hard time finding someone to pay $600 out of pocket for extensions done by someone who was learning. To me it seemed like it wouldnt be that big of a deal to put forth the money considering I would be able to make double that doing just one full head. She no showed the first consultation, which was on my day off but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and rescheduled her. We had a second consultation where I matched her and set the date for her to be my model. The place we were doing the training was out of town so I had to get a hotel room the night before. The day came for the training, and I showed up at the training center with my model nowhere in sight. she blew me off again. I tried calling/texting and I had been blocked. So, I paid for hair that matched this woman perfectly, which would be nearly impossible to find another person to match considering the company I was training with and ordered the hair through was keeping the hair for me until the training day. Out around $800, never doing that again.

I'm six minutes in, and I hear "tape-in." My heart seizes a little. I did those for five months last year, but holy balls was that first installation rough... She had done an initial with me, bought what she thought would be enough (3 packs of Aqua), and it really wasn't. Ended up having to come back the next day for ANOTHER 3 packs to be put in. Six packs total. Then after a bit, I realized that the glue and I did NOT get along, but I'd spent the money, and I was NOT letting it go to waste! Folks, if you're not prepared for something like that, I advise against doing them in the first place. It's expensive, it's a long process, and it can go in unexpected directions. I ended up really happy with them, though, despite the discomfort. But yeah, tape-ins have a lot to be considered before just diving in (even things people might not think of right away, like adhesive allergies)! I planned for months, and still ended up surprised lol

I had the same situation happen when I was “booked” for prom makeup at a wedding that I was working. A bridesmaid was so Adamant that I do her sisters makeup for her upcoming prom. She paid the deposit and I thought nothing of it. After the trial that was insisted upon by the mom, I was made to believe my work was great and I would show up a week later. Come the day of, I’m 30 min into my 45 min drive and I get a text that I happened to read while stopping for coffee. After practicing, they decided that they could recreate what I’d done themselves and thus my services weren’t needed. So pissed. From then on, up until I stopped freelancing, I included deposits as well as nonrefundable travel fees calculated by the mile.

Amen. I often say you have to train your clients. It’s sounds horrible, but if you do something one time that will become the norm. I once tattooed a “friend” on my normal day off, it became an every Monday thing for months and she was one of my most difficult clients. If you accommodate everyone, you work all day every day and hate your life. I accommodate me/my family first.

For all salon hair stylist employees, have clients leave messages to the receptionist. This way, you know its the client not you who fucked up. You have the salon owner involved. make it personal. your 60/40 with salon owner, an employee with a receptionist. Always document and keep it in your files. I have situations 10 years back. I never forget and remember not to make the same mistake twice.

I LOVE that you had a sponsor for this video in particular. Look who got the last laugh! Everything always pays off, pun intended 😉🤑 so sorry that happened though. Hopefully it never happens again! ❤️

I get the girl is shy and all but I’m sorry if my mom was sending messages and making other people’s jobs difficult I would have the decency to tell her to stop. What they did was not okay. You are so professional with they way you handle things

Boundaries are so important. 42 years in hairstyling, thinking you won't let it happen again?. Bam! A guest is a No Show..... Especially during this Pandemic. People are ruthless....

Girl like I'm a receptionist (hair stylist in the making) and I even hate it when people don't come in lmao I'm like I COULD HAVE BOOKED THEM WITH REAL CLIENTS. I take a deposit I write notations for their bs they pulled when they try making an appointment again.

Would it help to use a filler before you bleach your hair?
@styledbysamvay4 жыл бұрын
Filling does the opposite of bleaching, so no. That would be pointless.

Girl you need to grow a SPINE! You’re soooo so sweet but a lot of these stories are built around people taking advantage of your kindness!
