"I Feel Pretty" - West Side Story 1961/2021 Supercut

One year ago this weekend, Rachel Zegler sang and danced her way into our hearts as Maria when "West Side Story" was cinematically brought into the 21st century. And to celebrate, here's a supercut of the 1961 (Robert Wise/Jerome Robbins) and 2021 (Steven Spielberg) versions of "I Feel Pretty," as performed by Natalie Wood (dubbed by Marni Nixon) in the '61 film and Zegler in the '21 film.

Rachel's Maria is a Columbian-American cleaning lady (because...why?) and not Puerto Rican. Natalie's Maria is a Russian-American in "Brown Face," not Puerto Rican, lip-sycing, and works in a Bridal Shoppe. Both films are very flawed and perpetuate the negative view of their current entertainment climates. Hoping to see accurate representation in my lifetime. Culture/colours are not interchangeable. 😪

Mari Nixon dubbed the singing voice of several of Hollywood's most acclaimed actresses. She had a contract which strictly enforced her non-disclosure, apart from her paycheck. Of course, her role was a non-secret within the Hollywood community. I've wondered what the stars for whom she dubbed singing felt like, with all of their fellow stars knowing that they were being publicized and awarded for singing roles in musicals, when they couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

They're both stunning. My only criticism with the new West Side Story is that 'I Feel Pretty' should have come BEFORE the deaths of Riff and Bernardo, it was jarring to go from such a serious scene into IFP. If I recall correctly, in the 1961 version, IFP is more in the middle and before the death.

This is true to the 1957 stage version, which I think got the placement of the song right. There's a stronger emotional impact when you see Maria so happy and full of love. She has no idea what's just happened and that her entire world is about to come crashing down.

You can actually hear Natalie’s voice singing this song on KZbin, recorded before she was dubbed. In this song she is not bad but she did not have the vocal strength for some of the other songs. Notwithstanding that she was wonderful in the part and she was luminous on the screen😊
