We caught more than a couple of nice brook trout from an unnamed Canadian backwoods lake we've called "Puddle Lake!" It only took us 5 hours to navigate there overland this time! For anyone that doesn't know about this lake, 2 years ago, we followed the creek system up from the headwaters with loaded canoes in hopes of monster brook trout in this hidden gem of a lake. We never hooked into any monsters, but we had the lake to ourselves!

Pelican needs to make a multi purpose sled, long enough for a bed, with a net/cover that stretches over the top that makes a bed surface with storage space underneath/inside, you'd be up off the ground like a hammock, pitch the idea to them!? Watching you go up hill with the sleds gave me an idea for a sled "brake", a piece of plywood(or other material) hinged and hanging off the back of sled at an angle, so if you go backwards it drops and bites into the snow stopping the sled from sliding backwards, but allows sled to easily slide forwards.

The trick to staying dry during winter tenting is to keep the interior temperature of the hot tent to just below freezing. That is how we did it when I was stationed at Fort Wainwright, AK for 18 months. We spent a lot of time in the field all year long. You should have tented on shore and kept the interior on the tent cooler. I love your videos. Ron H. Sr.

As a woman who does "manly" things and even looks "manly" I have quite a bit of experince in the topic the woman was asking about in her question. I'd also like to say that I date woman as well, so I have to deal with my own sex and problem solving in the home every day in addition to problem solving with men in the field. With my personal life experience in male dominated sports and hobbies I can confidently say that men and woman both just want to be treated like people and any difference in behavior tend to be solization. Men and women are both going to be dick bags to you, and even though in my experience more men have been outright malicious then woman to me personally, it really all comes down to the fact that some people are just shitty people. When it comes to making friends with someone their sex does not matter. Either they are shitty or not, thats it. Sex only matters when it comes to interests of love or war. Don't surround yourself with shitty people and stand up for yourself, and learn to express your emotions in healthy and honest ways. Be down to earth. And encourage those around you to do the same. I've never had trouble with a well adjusted man if I just sit down with him and be honest. Same with women. Be a healthy adult, and healthy adults will be in your company. Male or female, gay or straight, just treat people like people and you will go far.

For hill climbs and descents like in this video series you may want to consider packing a hand operated winch aka a "come-along." That will make getting the sled packs up hill WAY easier and it will make guiding the sled packs down hill safely MUCH easier too all thanks to mechanical advantage.

I am also a woman who loves to hunt and of course I team up with my male friends, yet I've never had a feeling like I'd need to "prove myself" just because I got vagina. I also noticed that men I use to hang around cannot care less about the gender. Only thing that matters is how capable you are either at doing what you suppose to, or at learning new things. P.S.: I've never heard a man in wild saying "I'd rather freeze my balls off than wear silly looking pants."

Hey man, I'm not sure if youre gonna see this comment since the vid is pretty old, but you should get a tent mat. Put that on top of those spruce things. It insulates from the ground, keeps you warm and DRY. Try and clear the ground entriely of ice and snow before you cover it with spruce so there's not that much water after it gets heaten up. Also, try and setup a line running inside the tent(on the "roof", from one tent wall to another. Preferably from the opening to the back wall), you can dry your socks and whatever there without taking ground space. Regards, a fin.

About bushcrafty women, check out Girl in the Woods, Camper Christina, Survival Lily to name just a few awsome girls who in my opinion deserve more respect than they get. If I recal correctly Survival Lily was rasped, sneered at in a vulgar sexual way (not just poked fun at in the way Jer described men do) just because she's a woman and in bushcraft. And yet she's more knowledgeable and experienced than all those men who put her down for being a 'girl'. On the other hand, in life in general if you're not worth a good laugh 😂 you're not worth much. Gotta be able to take a tease.

Taking a risk by keeping the lake drop in? No, not at all, you are simply keeping it very real. I said once before and I'll say it again, it's refreshing that you don't edit out too much, if any, of your videos. I'm not there, so I'm sure some editing takes place, but near as I can tell all of the important stuff, humorous and otherwise, is kept in. Mad respect for being honest about the gal who wants to hunt. Being in a male dominated trade, I've learned that most men will test you & want to see you're able to pull your weight, just like you said. When I was 20 years younger, I believed in my heart that I could do anything the boys did & worked 2x harder to prove it. Now my body is broken down because that's how nature planned it. I'm more of a partnership person now with my male conterparts but will still sacrifice not feeling well for a few days if a young guy needs a lesson. To women who want to play with the boys, do it but recognize that we're different for a reason. It's okay to submit to a more hardily built person as long as it doesn't become routine. Give & take - learn what you want, give it all a try, but understand that it's not sexist if the boys treat you different.

for tent set up on a lake or in a bog or wtvr, build a floor first, then setup your tent around that floor. or build tent and floor it up as you are able, either works, but it's just easier to gather a bunch of logs or staves or boards or wtvr too setup floor first and wall over it that way you don't need to buck and limb so much especially on frozen lake. also if you have the manpower or wtvr you can stack 2 layers in a crossed formation and double it up, and with longer staves you get a kind of porch or patio space on 4 sides of your setup as a nice bonus to walk on. A further bonus if you leave some limbs on either end of your flooring outside the tent space, you can have some stuff for hanging things on or any number of uses depending on where the limb poke up. maybe make some nice wind break walls or fencing, or heat reflecters for super shelter type setup or on the list goes.

awesome video chris! not understanding though why you said if tent was on shore wouldn’t be able to fish constantly? i can honestly say when you set up on the lake i thought wind, water farther to haul wood etc! anyways, good stuff!

Cooking, sleeping, etc. would mean we'd have to go back to camp all the time...only chore was wood, after that we basically camped near our lines. Setting up a base and leaving it is okay, but it's nice to be near all your stuff and heat, etc. so you can do everything all at the same time.

But still on the ice? No flat shorelines or cuts or flats here except way up on the hill. There's no tent pads on the shore..remote, blow downs and rocks no flat spots....

Brook trout are symbolic to me as well. It is a true wilderness animal, native to every waterway that had glacial melt around here. Love a nice creek coming through a deep hemlock forest with trees all falling into it. I've caught a few 12" fish in water you can cross in one jump with a hand line up in the mountains. Though I really enjoy catching them by hand in small streams you should try it on your channel. You just need a small stream and then create hiding spots for the fish that you can pin them against or manipulate. String is a definite novelty so I think you might consider exploring how to catch a meal by hand. I enjoy your videos and though I hate to make comparisons to other channels, thanks for being more focused then all others when it comes to what survival means. You understand how surviving and living are different. Your videos connect them. I know you understand what I mean by this because your a deep thinker. I live in a 12x12 log cabin with no electricity and have to snowshoe all my stuff up a mountain. The snow is just like you showed, and if you factor in my cabin has a whitetail deer 1/4 outside and a winter bear is out nearby with a cub.....well each situation can become more survival. But to me that's a way of life and living. Just great to watch you as a person who understands that these ideals you represent in your videos are a way of life for many. Anyways your channel is one of 3 that a true outdoorsman would endorse any day without hesitating. Andrew Stanley and Lonnie have great channels like yours. All you guys know what your talking about and are always learning as well.

Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. That's quite the compliment. It's nice to hear from a fellow outdoorsman who really spends time out there. So very rare now. You cabin sounds like a spectacular place. I have had the idea of trying the handfishing technique just as you have laid out. If I have time, I will for sure.

Females. Underestimated. The women I grew up and learned a lot from would make John Wayne piss his pants. When I was a teenager an elk got hit by a car in the road crossing to my buddies families ranch. The game warden was called and his grandma and us went down to help. The bull was still alive and badly injured. The warden and another concerned citizen was discussing how to save him. My buddies grandma promptly pulled a 38 smith and Wesson out ,grabbed it by one antler and plugged it behind the ear. Quickly drew a sheathed knife and told the warden to either grab a leg or get the hell out of here. All the women I grew up with had grit.

Riverbendlongbows Outdoors l must agree. Winter weather camping and winter mountain climbing. Two young woman really showed most guys up. No complaints at all. I had a lot of respect for them. Most men in those conditions through the years have bailed out! The great part was when the girls were with us there was no complaining from the guys. They didn't want to be shown up!

Sometimes, yes, sometimes no. It matters how much pressure is under the ice, sometimes it will push up through the holes if the lake is getting filled for example. Often times, it gets really slushy after you cut holes.

For the stove pipe. How about having a wind break shield fastened onto the end of the pipe. A flat piece of metal a bit bigger than the circumference of the pipe that is able to be fastened onto the end at an angle about 4 to 5 inches from the pipe end. Could be easily made. Looked some up....look up " Wind Directional chimney caps".

Camping on a frozen lake would be Scarey for me. I'd have to build a raft first , and set up on the raft. I guess I,d have to put a fishing hole in the middle. Lol. But how would I cook without firewood if it thawed? Lol I enjoy your blogs. I wouldn't worry about the critics though. And they're informative too, in case I ever had to, I might be able to do some hard things. Sorry my comments probably don't make sense. Keep on blogging!

whenever i setup a hot tent i always shoot the stovepipe straight up. then you dont have to worry about wind. just make sure youre connections are tight before you get it hot. i also use a ground tarp, it really helps keep the heat in, although, it wouldn’t have helped much in your puddle

Hi Guys . I think the best hot tent is a tipi :) , you can CONTROLL the draw of smoke with the smoke flaps no matter which way the wind blows ! It also provides more space , and puts the fire at the middle of the tent , and you can have a heaps better fire when you need the heat , for whatever reason :) . You just carry the skin , and source poles on location . I've lived in a tipi for for years at a time , and they are Awsome ! :) peace !

From me and my dad ghee man we really thought u were going down glade your safe and love the respect you have for your fans in need just remember to take your time and double think it over when your out there to be extra safe and a trick I usaly do to work around not forgetting clothing wear both layers on you but remember to take one layer off that way you don't risk not bringing the second pair as it's a major life line of survival and your carry weight is easier as your distributing a small portion over your body and possible bring another pair to be safe as you never know how cold it could possibly drop or could have a situation where u find someone needing a spare pair of clothing to survive not knowing

a quick fix for the sled being hard to drag in turns, take along a crazy carpet or something like that, attach it or roll it up top for line hauling, and when you go zigzagging a lot, run your sled on top of the crazy carpet and attach it some how so you basically just drag the 1 huge thing. also some hauling rope for hill climbing where you get to where you wanna go and haul it to you, maybe anchor it with a stick or tent peg so it don't slide downhill as you climb.
