Lord of the rings has a good variety of really positive male role models in it. My favorite example is probably Sam. Im pretty short myself and don’t have a ton of traditionally super masculine traits or interests. I think Sam is a great example of how someone like that can still be brave and heroic and overcome adversities.

Masculinity is at its peak in LotR. Literally all of the positive traits we've associated to it for centuries, without any of the toxic aspects in any capacity. The few times men in LotR do something that modern toxic ideology would describe as "emasculate" such as platonic love to another man, showing emotions like crying and laughing and all that, or depending on others and having the courage to ask for help, LotR shows that those aspects do not take away from masculinity, but strengthen it, add to it, enhance it. Those books and films helped make me the man that I am today. Hell, if I had a gun pointed to my head, and was asked "who is the perfect example of masculinity in fiction," I would have trouble deciding between Aragorn or Uncle Iroh.

As someone who is into Tolkien on an unhealthy level, the reason that the movies are so popular is because the story and worldbuilding is on a level that I've never seen replicated anywhere else. The books were massively popular because nobody had ever written fantasy like that, and it inspired pretty much every fiction story that came after it, either directly or indirectly. And it spawned an entire new genre of fantasy. On top of that, the story really is for everyone. There isn't anything you can really point to that would keep people away from it, aside from just a general lack of interest in fiction or reading in general. It's definitely fantasy, and believe me, you can get very deep into the lore, but you don't have to. If you don't like the fantastical stuff you see in books like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings is for you. There is magic and different races and stuff, but it's pretty subtle for the most part. You don't want the graphic violence or explicit content that's in something like A Song of Ice and Fire? Great. Lord of the Rings is pretty PG. Do you want a roller-coaster of emotions? Got you covered. Do you want a happy ending? You got it. Want a bittersweet ending? It's got you there too. And most importantly, the themes are both timeless and universal. From friendship, sacrifice, love, and kindness, to war, regret, loss, and suffering. There's characters that every single person can relate to in some way. You have Aragorn, Samwise, Frodo, Pippin, Merry, Bilbo, Eowyn, Faramir, Theoden, Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, and many more, all of whom represent all kinds of people and values but are all ultimately good. There's even Tom Bombadil, for people who want to live completely alone in the woods with they're spouse and run around picking flowers and singing songs about themselves. There's something for everyone in there.

Lord of the Rings is seen as a sort of standard of fantasy nowadays, obviously, but if you look at it a bit more, it actually subverts a bunch of expectations, the most notable perhaps, being that it's not Aragorn, the Chose One, the guy with the prophecies about him and the magical sword, who is the main character or the one who saves the world in the end. No, it's the little hobbits.

On the point of the popularity, I don‘t really think it‘s a contradiction. I suspect the fact that so few popular works have, for example, LotR‘s positive male role models, probably has more to do with the people making (or gatekeeping the creation of) various works of pop culture, and less to do with whether people would be willing to consume something like this. i.e. Jackson got the studios to make LotR because it was LotR and they could smell the dollar bills. But in other cases, similar content would be judged too radical and possibly „woke“ to risk producing.

I read the books when I was young, and I loved them. LOTR spawned a whole trend, and I loved that trend. The movies were okay. Peter Jackson could have messed them up, but he didn't. The acting was good. The pace wasn't bad. The movies were safe, though. They lost a lot of the magic of the books. Also, there wasn't anything new to be excited about. The series dragged at points. The LOTR movies weren't revolutionary like Star Wars, but they were worth seeing. They were accessible - anyone could watch them.
@Aaismar
@Aaismar 2 ай бұрын
I think you're wrong on some points. Those movies were quite revolutionary and a risky bet overall, which paid of, as they are now considered in genre as an example to look up to. But yeah, it may have lost some charm from the books, Christopher Tolkien wasn't happy about the outcome if I remember it well. Although I think it was inevitable if those movies were to make sense as movies.

Not so sure about LotR being a green flag. Unfortunately, all (or even most) fans don‘t necessarily absorb or even fully reflect the philosophical content of the art they consume.
@Soulferno
@Soulferno 2 ай бұрын
Most fans I've seen absolutely talk about the deeper meaning to LotR whenever you ask them. The ones that don't just aren't movie buffs and simply enjoyed the trilogy as they saw it. Unless you're getting your impressions from Reddit or some other cesspool social media, real LotR fans hold a deep passion for the trilogy and even the lore of the books. The people who've only seen the movies, like myself, still hold them in high regard because they're simply fantastic stories with great characters. LotR isn't even my favorite piece of fiction but honestly, it is objectively the best movie trilogy in the history of cinema because it is indeed just that good and a majority of fans would agree with that assessment whether they're super fans or not
@raylast3873
@raylast3873 2 ай бұрын
@@Soulferno „talking about the deeper meaning“ and absorbing the the social and political ideas of the author are two very different things. And there are definitely plenty of fans with extremely superficial ideas. Plenty of right-wing ppl also tend to celebrate Tolkien, regardless of the fact that they generally don’t understand his work very well.
