G'day, you mob! Today, I finally give you the first plant of the plant tour video you've all been asking me for for months now :) So Merry Xmas! I go through the first portion of my 200+ plant collection in my lounge.
Connect with me on Instagram - / petevsplants
In today's video we go through all different kinds of aroids and non-aroid plants. So the usually suspects like Monstera, Philodendron, & Alocasia, but also Begonia, Rhipsalis, Chlorophytum, and more! There are rare and common plants, cheap and expensive plants, variegated and non-variegated plants, and hopefully a couple of random things in there that will surprise you. I hope you enjoy the video :)

Hi. It's me again. Grab a coffee and get comfortable. 🤣 I can't help myself. Plants are my passion so I can't not engage with other planty people. Probably a good idea breaking the plant tour up in to parts. I could happily watch it all, but my comment would be even longer still. 🙄 It's fortunate I'll never visit. I'd talk your ear off and you wouldn't be able to get rid of me! Never hesitate tell me to stfu. 😂 I'm so happy to see someone who loves spider plants. I've seen too much hate for them, and crotons. Chlorophytum is one of my favourite genera. I've got a small reverse variegation, like yours, and a wee solid green rehab. I had three but lost two, they were very poorly when I got them. The survivor was touch and go for a long while but has finally started to bounce back. I want to collect as many cultivars as I can. ❤ Very groovy. I always learn something new from your videos. Today, it was about the Siltepecana. I have a wee El Salvador. I chose it over the standard because it is more silvery. I freaking adore silver foliage! I must have missed the fact they grow larger when I was learning the differences. The bushy pot of the props looks amazing. NGL, I get envious sometimes seeing other's plants, but it's drowned out by the inspiration. I'm also off to learn more about the rhaphidophora genus. I knew there was more than just the tetrasperma I was obsessed with getting, and got. Labelled as philodendron minima. Made me laugh. That decursiva got my attention. The common name is very apt. Definitely need. It's going to be the next rhaphidophora I chase me thinks. In fact, I think it might just be my next chase, period. ❤ On the solstice I got a freebie from Woolies. A boggy and rotty "alocasia amazonica dwarf". That's all the label said. I've been trying to suss out it's particular cultivar. I was sort of confident from group feedback that it was a Bambino, but now I'm more sure. I've never rehabbed an alocasia. I have just followed advice from the google machine and a fakeborg group. I cut it right back. Now it's just a matter of wait and see I guess. lol I'm hopeful, but honestly don't expect it to recover. It's got a little bit of moosh again. Not sure if I should cut more back or wait and see. I don't know alocasia so I will be asking the group. lol My first alocasia was a Black Velvet and a Sarian. Had them for nearly 3 months. The BV struggled to support more than 2 or 3 leaves. It decided to pop out 3 flowers recently and dropped 2 of the 4 leaves it had managed to hold for a while. I think the flowers are close to done. She's starting to push out a new leaf now. The spadix on the first two are all dried up, the third is about to open. I'm thinking of cutting them now so she can focus on the leaf. I didn't want to cut them sooner, I wanted to see it flower, and I didn't want to interfere with what she naturally wanted to do. I read a lot of people have their plants basically stall after the flowers were cut before new leaf production. From my reading on the google machine I think the plant has said stuff it, I can't produce seed so I'll produce corms instead. IDK, it is just a guess from my limited knowledge. My sarian was very much a baby when I got it. One of those lil 66mm square pots from the Big Green Shed. It had mostly only juvenile leaves. The two newest leaves were just starting to show some of the 'waviness'. The larger it has gotten, the fewer leaves it has been able to maintain. I have heard it is not an uncommon thing in the younger stages for some alocasia species. It wouldn't surprise me that stress could cause the same thing. Be it the stress of flowering, or poor health. I hope your slow and poorly ones recover beautifully. 🤞 If you ever succeed in you crossing of the silver sword and subhastatum, I'll be first in line to buy one! I love the name idea. It's freaking awesome! I'm looking at my silver sword and imagining red leaf backs. It would be stunning af! Silver AND red foliage? Yes please! 😍 I have a marble queen that's reverted. She did it after a prop chop. The two nodes she activated after have zero variegation. She's been banished to the limited window space in the lounge room. The E. aurea I rehabbed is loving it there so I'm hoping it helps her too. If she stays green I'm not heartbroken because she's still pretty and will still add to my indoor jungle. I have other marbles with high and medium levels of variegation. They're going to look great on a moss pole together eventually. I might even add some of the revert if she stays that way. Is the M. aurea problem child getting any direct sun? I see it's by a window. I've read that can be a cause for the leaves doing that. That, and under watering. The aurea is apparently a little more fussy, or so I've read. I'd love to adopt it and try to rehab it. Props and rehabs are my favourite thing to do. It's such a dopamine hit when things sprout and take off. 😆 The Thais with the two different levels of variegation would look great on a totem together. I think the mix of variegation would be lovely. Like my plans for some of my marble queen. I *squeed* when you were naming all your epipremnums. It made me feel like I influenced someone coz of my comment and your reply the other day about "pothos". 😏😂 Speaking of taxonomy. Regarding monstera. I learned borsigiana is not a separate species or cultivar. It's only a synonym of the deliciosa. A "borsigiana" given optimal growing conditions will grow no differently to a "large form" monstera. The ruffle thing is a myth too. The ruffles are maturity related. That's according to the Royal Botanic Garden and being the nerdy science type I am, I am inclined to follow their science as it were. 🤓 If you know of anything regarding any DNA type testing to clear up the argument around borsigiana I'd love to hear about it. 👍 I hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas, or whatever you may observe around this time of year. I look forward to my next essay, I mean, your next video. 🙃

Hi Pete, first of all a merry Christmas to you and your family. I think that your main problem with those brown leaves is the wrong PH level and too much or too little fertilizer. The easiest way to try to determine the problem is to water the plant with just distilled water, make sure there is enough in the cache pot to put in a PH meter and a microsiemens meter. That way you´ll know if there is too much or too little of one or the other and you can adjust with the next watering. Begonias need a PH level between 5 and 6, Alocasias between 5.5 and 6.5, Monstera do better at around 7. On Google you can find more info on almost all your plants. As for fertilizing I think it´s better to use a weak dose with every watering and up the dose every once in a while for those that need more. When I water my plants I mix tap water and distilled water to the correct PH, then add my fertilizer and measure both levels before giving it to my plants.

@politicalpossum9474

I also find the PH level of water is important. I don’t alter the PH to each individual plant, I just make sure it’s between 6-7. This way I only have to buy distilled water for my Venus Flytrap.🌿🪴 Ps- love your collection

Thanks for the plant tour! Absolutely loved it! In regard to Monstera deliciosa aurea repot it in a net pot using coco perlite 70/30 blend. Sprinkle a root inoculant directly on the roots. I use Myco Supreme. You will need to water more often as the coco perlite dries faster but actually for some reason my coco perlite for my aurea doesn't seem to dry out as fast as some of my other plants. Water using a hydroponics solution. My aurea is absolutely beautiful! Merry Christmas Pete and to your family as well! God Bless. Marie, USA-Pennsylvania.

Merry Christmas from Cape Town, South Africa!!! Gorgeous plants in your collection ... with regards to the Begonia with the fungus spots...they hate water on their leaves. Also I think the browning would be lack of humidity...same with the Monstera Aurea. Bump up your humidity and that should clear up. My Begonia Rex is also being a pain but I've bumped up the humidity and only water from the bottom and so far it hasn't died yet.

@@petevsplants7516 70% is good so higher wouldn't always be pleasant lol maybe think of transferring the aurea to 70/30 mix of coco perlite and only feed nutrients, that might just do the trick. Your collection is stunning!! Loads of wishlist plants for me in your collection

I love Alocasias and thankfully, me as a new plant parent (although very green thumb with a lovely garden outdoors lol) I haven’t killed any, but the only issue I find is my black velvet likes to chuck a new growth, and then kill a leaf in return. It browns and shrinks up from the bottom of the leaf upwards and I can’t figure it out.
