New York was settled originally by the Dutch before it was eventually taken over by the English. It is why Orange and Blue are common colors for NY state sports teams and why the NYC flag is based off of the old Dutch tri color. Before it was New York it was New Amsterdam, hence the Amsterdam references on occasion. You can see the Dutch influence in certain things even to this day as well, namely location names. The craziness part for me of visiting NY was the amount of Police around. There's millions of police constantly around, kind of creepy.
