Hello ! I love how you share what could be called weak times. I myself happen to have great "bliss" days, but very few of them, and I keep looking forward to get back to these fluent moments. Watching your videos is very supportive. Thank you !!

I’m so glad to hear they are supportive. I think it’s important to share the good and the bad days!

My friend and teacher and extremely good flutist introduced me to long tones right away and said to play descending at first, the same as you played, but play each twice. He said it is important to hear the tone center and it becomes apparent when played twice on each chromatic set , 1 beat 3 beats, then descend half a tone. The previous 3 beat note now becomes the 1 beat note, etc. Richie PS a little story. I had what my teacher called a "musical experience" it was at a Galway concert in Lincoln center NY, it was either the Mozart G or D major concerto when he ended on the last note, the entire audience sat there hypnotized for at least 10 to 15 seconds and then everyone looked around as if to say "what just happened to me" 15 seconds may not seem long but at a concert it is an eternity. Then the full house gave a thundering applause. The second time I had a musical experience was at a student recital, we played in groups and solo with piano and I being older than everyone played a duet with Lee my teacher. Then finally he played with his solo with piano, it was a katchaturian piece, when he played the last note no one of 25 people moved, as if hypnotized the same as the Galway concert, these people were moms, dads, etc. not at all interested in classical music, but stood up in disbelief of what had just happened to them, it was truly amazing.

I had a wonderful flute teacher who had me sort of turn long tones into a meditative practice and the relaxation from that became SO enjoyable! She also taught me to press the keys with the most featherweight touch when changing notes, which helped immensely with hand pain

Cool that's is what I'm doing right now too. 29 days passed since I started to learn playing flute and playing long notes is what my teacher told me to do every day. So setting my metronome at 60 BPM and playing wholes 1 per 4 beat and it helped me a lot. I was not able to play one whole on one breath at beginning mainly because overblowing into the flute. Pitch was not stable also. And now I'm able to play 3-4 wholes on one breath and pitch stability improved. So practicing long notes is the thing that every adult learner should start with. I'm playing long notes for 30 minutes each day as a part of my daily practice other 30 minutes for scales arpeggios and simple melodies.

October seems like a great month to start consistent long tone practice!

My teacher recommends long tone practice each day, especially at the start of practice. I think it helps me to focus early on tone quality, endurance and support. I'm still an intermediate player, but I can't even imagine ignoring long tones. They really are essential, whether you hate them or not.

Very true! My teacher had a scale warm up system that was essentially meant to be like long tones but had my fingers moving which I loved! But…he did suggest practicing long tones at the end of each day to improve your tone and really work on tone and I conveniently skipped that 🤣

All right, you've convinced me. One advantage of practicing long tones is that you don't need to think... so you can do them when you're tired. (And it's cold here too, btw.)

You know what you might try, develop like a "New Age" riff ( for me ,I would like it in a minor key) , I love anything in a minor key. Then you could indicate on the screen what supporting drone note you wanted us to hold with changes when needed, to include register changes. Even a newbee dope like me could do that and if it really sounds good we would be jazzed (no pun intended) to play along with you.😃

I do do long tones, but could spend more regular and longer times doing them. It's so much more Fun doing all the various scales ! 😸♥️♥️😃

Glad to know I’m not the only one that find long tones boring and tedious but I know they are good to practice.

Personally I don't like practising long tones as well, but now I'm at a point where it is almost necessery for me as I use them as a sort of warm up so to speak. If I do not play long tones at the beginning of my practice session, I'm not able to get my sound which I have right now.

Totally! You get really hooked on them when you realize how helpful they are…I have always just been so impatient!

On a serious note, whistle tones are a good modification for long tones. Another challenge is the humming a concordant note during the long tone.
