I finally read The Narrow Road Between Desires by Patrick Rothfuss and… how can I put this…

I should have taken the pretentious yet empty title “The Narrow Road Between Desires” to be an indicator of the story within… Patrick Rothfuss, author of the beloved The Name of the Wind, strikes again.

The more time passes the less people are enamoured by Rothfuss's writing. Novelty always wears off.

The original short story is one of my favorites. It was just a chef's kiss and I don't think it needed any rewriting.

I love the Name of the wind and the wise mans fear, but I hated the music of silence (the novel about Auri). And you described this new novel exactly how I though about the previous one. He overcomplicated simple things, the book barely has dialog, and its boring as fuck Eventualy I will reread the 2 books, probably change my mind too, but for now the name of the wind is my favorite fantasy book. I don't know exactly what you think about Brandon Sanderson, but I also didn't like any of his books I've read (Steelheart and Mistborn). Now I just can't find any fantasy good enough Anyway, nice video!

You should try "The Way of Kings", it's Sanderson's best book series until now. Sad you didn't like Mistborn though, have you read just the first book or the whole trilogy?

1. The Shadow of The Gods (and the sequence, The Hunger of Gods) 2. Along The Razor's Edge (5 books saga) 3. The Ninth Rain (First book or a trilogy) 4. The Grace of Kings ( 4 books saga) 5. The Witcher (7 books saga) 6. The faithful and the fallen (4 books saga) 7. Rothfuss is a very mediocre writer of fantasy imo. My expectations of The Name of the Wind were sky high after hearing so many people rave about it. But I dnf’d halfway through. He pulled off all tropes of fantasy one after the other which I thought lacked originality. That the man doesn’t seem to finish his series, like George Martin, is a bummer for his fans but I think it’s rather silly to think readers can ‘demand’ a next book from a writer like they have the right on a next book.

I dnf’ed the book too. Then i saw an interview where he said he wanted to write something that hasn’t been done in fantasy. The first book is about a wizard university… bro 😭 … and an overpowered wizard … double bro 😭

First of all there isn't a single new idea out there. Second troups arnt inherently bad all fantasy has them. That's what makes a book belong to a Genre.

I dnf’d it as well, when I got a 1/4 of the way through I could no longer stomach Kvothe as character. He had such an interesting set-up as a bartender, but the longer I spent in his 1st person perspective and hearing him romanticize about all his abilities 24/7 became too much for me. I bought the book at Barnes and noble after reading the prologue and I was enamored by the language. But that language can only carry the plot for so long and it didn’t redeem the character for me. Having said that, I hope he keeps writing and putting stuff out there.

I'm very disappointed by this novella. It's just The Lightning Tree with progressive updates. So now Bast bats for both teams (now it's a shepherd instead of a sheperdess)? That's new. Oh and instead of being a rake and a rogue it turns out that Emberlee paid to have someone tell Bast where she swims? Dumb. And the kids drinking tea? Give me a freaking break. Door of Stone is going to be an absolute mess. I think I'm going to stick to reading the first two books and imagining what the ending might have been.

You may join me now in being sad. Oh my, it was such a rehash of The Lightning Tree with some additional bits, come on Rothfuss! 🤣 I will give one suggestion regarding fantasy which I am applying myself: Reread the guaranteed favourites, don't try new authors, nothing but disappointment to be had. 😁 Leave the experimentation to litfic, honestly lesser time investment (since mostly all standalones) and less disappointment. If you are looking for the next Robin Hobb, 🤔 there are two options I can suggest (three actually but I don't like Guy Gavriel Kay's writing so won't suggest him) - Curse of the Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold (standalone, series consists of connected standalones) - Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts (part of a longer series but works as a standalone). If you read ebooks, maybe try the sample, especially for Wurts since very distinctive writing style. Or join me in rereading Tolkien again and being sad. 🤣 Umm...what else...I started Berserk by Kentaro Miura (manga) and against all odds, I am loving it, the artistry is jaw-droppingly incredible. Happy holidays! Hope you find lots of good books to read and have a good time. 😊🌷

Man, i can get on board with bashing Rothfuss, hes a total dirtbag. But you reaaally come off as a classic fantasy snob here, like maybe you just dont enjoy modern fantasy at all. Calling Sanderson's asthetic "cheap"? Like really dude? Lol. That man puts more money into his books than anyone else is currently.

I'm sorry but I will agree with Juan. And we are probably a minority, but I'm not really trying to be a snob or anything like this. I've tried to read multiple Sanderson's books and they didn't catch me at all. I've read Steelheart, than the fans told me that "ok, that is not his best work, try Mistborn" and then I read Mistborn, and that sucked too (terrible dialog, terrible characters, only nice magic). Then he has like this huge Cosmere series/worlds and I definitely do not want to go after that with 2 poor experiences... But, again, everybody loves Sanderson and that's fine

I think it's reasonable to not enjoy a lot of modern fantasy when the majority of modern fantasy is trope-ridden YA garbage written like the only target audience are sweaty action figure collectors who haven't held a non-genre book in their hands since high school. Sanderson's aesthetic is cheap *despite* the money he dumps into his books and that's just sad.

No, I do enjoy modern fantasy as well. Sanderson is just trashy and in my opinion his taste is very poor and tacky, with a taste of superhero-videogameishness that I just cannot get on board with even though I have tried. The Mistborn book was laughably bad (I only read the first one and I could not believe some people fall for that stuff), Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians was actually pretty fun and enjoyable, but then The Way of Kings was just very poorly written and also had a hint of Mormonism-Scientology-reminiscent stuff (that’s the feeling I had, I’m merely describing how I felt) that I just did not like at all. He’s just the McDonald’s for the masses, and that’s okay to enjoy from time to time, but let’s face it, he’s not Donna Tartt. (Wow am I a huge snob now) 🤓

I'm looking for a modern high fantasy author to read (modern as in post 2000s). I've only found Abercrombie, but even then it's not as "high" as I'd like. I can't read any more of Sanderson's books. I like the man, but the books are boring. Name of the Wind was one of the worst books I've read. I cringed throughout
