@@DenariusHaveNarius My favorite is a throwaway line that gets no response. After the soldier's girlfriend remarks he would need the watch he just gave her, he replies that it's okay, it doesn't work. The though a boyfriend would gift a broken watch to his girlfriend strikes me funny each time I watch the movie.

What makes this funnier to peopke that know them is that Captain Oveur (Peter Graves), the head guy in the tower (Lloyd Bridges), Rex Kramer (Robert Stack) who they call in to talk him down and the doctor (Leslie Nielsen) were all known for serious dramatic roles before this movie. Every one of them playing it straight while they say the most outrageous things was hilarious to us back then. 😂 And don't call me Shirley.

Unfortunately, some reactors also have Patreon channels, which means they can't pause. Patreon avoids copyright issues by having the viewer watch their own copy of the movie and follow along with the reactor's comments. If the reactor pauses the movie, it would throw the viewer's copy out of synch.

so this is a direct spoof of airplane disaster movies that were popular in the 70s. the movie itself follows the almost to the T from a 50s movie Zero Hour! the movie was made with dramatic actors because the directors felt that casting comedic actors in a comedy film wouldn't be as funny. this movie relaunched the career of Leslie Neilsen (Dr Rumack) as a comedy actor. You have to watch The Naked Gun movies. absolutely hilarious

I saw that you left the "shit's gonna hit the fan" gag in, but I was hoping to see your reaction to it! Also, I was hoping to see the scene where a passenger who needed to be "calmed down". The doctor (Leslie Nielsen) slaps her (a couple times, IIRC!), then there's a line of people waiting to take a shot at her! And possibly my favorite joke, the "Excuse me stewardess, I speak jive" gag! The old woman is played by Barbara Billingsley, who was famous for playing the mom on Leave it to Beaver, a VERY wholesome 50s sitcom. Hysterically funny scene that COMPLETELY spoofs her wholesome image, as she keeps up with "the jive dudes" (as they are referred to)!

What people who are young such as yourself don't realize is that almost all of the actors only did serious movies and serious characters up until this movie. It was quite the shock and made it all so much funnier seeing the likes Lloyd Bridges saying 'picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue.' Too funny. I don't think any of them had ever done a comedy before.
@katscully
@katscully Ай бұрын
This is one of the first, if not THE first "parody" film. A lot of context is lost from not knowing some of the films from the 40's on up, and the pop culture of the time that are referenced in this film. That said it still holds up in many ways. In the '70' there were a fair amount of "disaster" films from a capsized cruise ship to airline crashes to high rise building infernos, all with "all-star" casts which is the backdrop of this one.. Now, on to part 2 which I actually liked a little more.👍🥂

The man and woman over the loudspeakers in the airport were the actual airport announcers at LAX and were also a married couple. The man in the cab was not an actor. He was a well-known businessman from California who lobbied heavily to reign in government spending in California. It’s obscure, and you’d have to have been from California at that time to even know who he was, but the joke is that he just sits there allowing the tab to keep going up without doing anything. The black guys speaking jive, which they wrote themselves, was all a setup for the punchline of the older white woman speaking it as well and back to them. The actress was Barbara Billingsley. She played June Cleaver in the 1950’s TV show Leave It To Beaver and was the epitome of a white middleclass mother and housewife of that era. The woman who thinks to herself that her husband never has a second cup of coffee at home was an actress who did national coffee commercials - I think for Yuban - and that was always her catchphrase. Peter Graves (pilot), Leslie Neilson (doctor), Lloyd Bridges (air traffic controller) and Robert Stack (pilot in tower) were very famous and legendary dramatic actors who had done little to no comedy. Casting them in this movie and having them say and do such ridiculous things was SO out of character for them. That is what made it so funny. Peter Graves was the main character in the original TV series Mission Impossible, which the Tom Cruise movies are based on. There is a reference to it in Airplane!2. Lloyd Bridges sons, actors Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges, begged him to do this movie so they could laugh at him. It led to many more comedy roles for all of them. Lloyd Bridges was also in a couple of episodes of Seinfeld toward the end of his life. Ethel Merman was a very famous and successful actress, singer and Broadway star. Yes, that was her in the hospital flashback basically playing herself. The song she sings was one of her trademarks. I’m not sure, but the horse in bed with the pilot’s wife might be a reference to The God Father. The ridiculous images in the background while Robert Stack is driving to the airport is making fun of the bad special effects used up till around that time whenever people are driving.

when this movie came out, no one had seen a movie done like this before, and was side splitting hiliarity! then the TSA was formed since the terrorist attacks on 9/11. now this movie is even funnier than even before, with the context!

Damn. I’m. At my company retreat so I missed this video popping up. This movie is the best example of beautifully ridiculous. Part 2 is good as well. But also The Naked Gun series is a must watch.

A lot of bits, like the plane coming through the big window in the airport, are direct pokes at a series of "Airport" movies from the 1970s, which were serious disaster films.

23:55 "Pinch hitting for Pedro Borbon.... Manny Mota" is funny in itself as a wierd thing for his inner monologue to hear. Doubly funny for baseball fans as they were never on the same MLB team. So Mota never could've replaced Borbon.

Kareem Abdule Jabar was also one of Bruce Lee's students and was in the movie Game of Death with Bruce but the real Bruce Lee was only in the last fight scenes because they were filmed first and he died before he finished the movie.

Ok: the beach scene was a parody of the movie Love Story. Johnny is my favorite character! His jokes are more subtle. Alot of the jokes refer to movies and commercials, cultural things, of the time and recent past (like the "Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home" line) The black guys were speaking jive and the woman who translated was the mom from the show The Waltons. The "war" scenes are from WWI which ted was too young to have been a part. THE BEST, and first, real parody movie.😂

When the plane starts up, it spoofs a very iconic departure scene on a train, the 1944 wartime Since You Went Away, which you can catch on KZbin: Since You Went Away, chasing the train The soldier and his girlfriend are saying goodbye in the train station. A conductor comes up to the couple, checks his pocket watch, and says "better get on board, son." The soldier is able to keep the vestibule door open as the train begins to accelerate with characteristic chugging sounds increasing in tempo. He tosses her his own watch and she runs along side the train, just managing the avoid running into the platform light posts, hitting them in the spoof.

This would be very unlikely to happen these days, they make sure the pilot and co-pilot have different meals.. They won't tell you if someone is aboard a particular flight these days, I don't know if they ever would. They did let people smoke on planes, back then. The beach flashback is a parody of a scene in ''From Here to Eternity' i'm told, I've not seen it.

The egg cracks open & a bird flys away. "What kinds sickness is that?" He asks. Why it's "The Bird Flu" of course. Every second of this movie is a joke, I've seen it at least 100 times & people are mentioning things I hadn't noticed yet. Every little detail. The white woman that spoke Jive, why that's June Cleaver, the Mother on the hit TV family show from the 60's called "Leave it to Beaver" & probably what we would consider the whitest mom in America. The '2nd cup of coffee' is a copy of a popular TV ad. The sound from the Jet is a prop airplane not a jet? & it goes on & on & on...
