Before we get all crazy I just wanted to let everyone know that 1) YES, I was really pulled over 2) The car wasn't registered so when they ran the VIN and it came up as an out of state car a whole bunch of red flags went off. Rightfully so. Big fat oof on my part.

The stolen car is usually parked in plain sight, it might not be the most crowded place, but it's definitely not hidden. It sits there from few hours to few days, while car thieves keep an eye on it, also observing how 'hot' the circumstances are. If they notice that the car doesn't attract too much attention, police don't run back and forth to find it, they decide to relocate it to their safe place.

I have to agree, the same thing happened to me when I was in high school. I had just got my first car running and took it out for a test drive. The officer was a jerk to me, I explained the situation to him and he didn’t care. He said he was going to impound my car but, then got a call and said it was more important and left. I was obeying all the traffic rules, which it looks like Rich was too. I got lucky but, Rich should at least get a chance to show the paperwork.

Nathaniel Reid I worked in local government with law enforcement as a fire fighter for 11 years. I am well aware of the public’s perception of law enforcement. Still doesn’t change the fact that without any knowledge of the situation, without checking any paperwork, without allowing Rich to prove anything he jumped to the conclusion that it was stolen. This could have been handled a number of different ways. The idea of innocent until PROVEN guilty doesn’t really apply I guess. Yes in the end it was Rich’s fault with the plate and it being unregistered, doesn’t mean anyone has to like the behavior.
