It'd be very cool if non-effective moves had animations too (not status tho, only attacking moves). When you use Thunderbolt on that Steelix, it just stands there, unfazed, NO HIT ANIMATION FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (when you use Earthquake in a double battle, even Flying Pokémon who aren't affected by it do the hit animation even though they lose no health, it looks so dumb). And if you use a Ghost type move on a Normal type or vice versa, there should be a special animation in which the attack goes right through them, and a flavor text saying "The attack went right through!". But of course even something small like that is too much to expect from Game Freak at this point.

This idea is gold. This gives more sense and life to Pokémon. I’d like to see Pokémon start the fight with grounded animation then upon using fly (or like you said, getting hit with ground type move), use the flying animation for the rest of the battle (until they use roost or gravity is used). But alas, that would be asking too much from lazy GF who can’t even do walking Pokémon properly right after they succeeded to do so with earlier games: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee.

One thing I would really like implemented in SwSh is more lively Pokemon. Most Pokemon you see in the game are just roaming around without any emotion or personality, and this is just sad and boring to watch. I would like to see a Pikachu sleeping under a tree, a Zangosse fighting a Seviper, a Pidgeot catching a Magikarp on the river, an Alakazam meditating, etc, etc. Just something to make Pokemon seems more alive.

Yea I brought up a similar point in one of my videos from last year. BOTW nailed that with it's enemies as they are brimming with curiosity and do many different things that are completely independent from the player. AND the player can also interact with them in cool ways too. However BOTW only had like 5 enemy types while Pokemon has hundreds. I'm not sure how hard it is to program some decent AI but it would at the very least take a while considering the large number of them.

​@Aizette Lazy would not be a word to describe them. Sure they reuse animation, but when faced with yearly games(forced upon due to the pressures of sustaining the anime and TCG) it would be hard. Also the lore about the Pokemon is fantastic, pokemon like Orbeetle, Dragapult, and Grimmsnarl give depth to the world. I'm not saying they can't do better, they certainly got a long way to go on the Switch, but given the circumstances and context it makes it more justifiable.

New pokemon in the competitive meta to spice things up, the anime so Ash can go to a new region and whatnot, TCG for new cards, and the spin-offs. Pokemon is changing it's formula in other areas and you can also see Pokemon lore and design increase. Gen 4 remakes(are hopefully) have some thought due to the time they are putting into it. Also the first game on a new console, let's Gamefreak dip their toes, as the next ones will test the limitations of the hardware and put it to the test. So just be patient.

Old sprites from older games didn’t even have animation. Sprite animation in games in black or white weren’t that expensive for Pokémon. The Pokémon do have animation but it’s only after they have stayed idled for a period of time or have been told to perform a move.

I've always felt like the flying/gliding idle-animations were dumb. The pokémon actually standing on the ground and only flying when attacking is much better and makes it feel more alive! Giving certain mons two idle-animations would have made the sky-battles a little more dynamic and interesting as well. Pokemon able to do sky-battles would suddenly look completely different from the standard grounded battles!

I think winged pokemon should toggle between grounded animations and flying animations (With respective wing flapping) when they make an attack or every certain time. I.e: Skarmory stays grounded when it gets out of the pokeball, but, 30s later, it will fly for other 30s, or fly whenever he uses attacks like Air slash. This would let us see flying pokemon much more alive, because we don't just see them standing in the ground, they will ocassionally fly. Also, can't wait to see how you fix Salamence

I actually like BOTH animations, flying and grounded. For me, it makes sense that, for example, Skarmory can fly/glide but it makes also sense that they're not always in the air. Game Freak could just do 2 idle animations for a flying Pokémon. In one match, it could be in a standing animation and in another one, it could be in a flying animation. And don't tell me it's impossible, Game Freak made more difficult things than coding 2 animations.

Okay so, I’m gonna go on a ramble here lol “But they can’t make unique animations for 1000+ pokemon!” Actually they can, the whole point of when they went from 2D to 3D was to future proof pokemon. That model of pikachu they made all the way back in X and Y is the same one we see in Sword and Shield (there are enough videos showing that GF are using the same models so yeah). Same goes for the animations, compare double kick’s animation in x and y to the one in swsh. It’s the same one, now is reusing animations bad? No, not at all. Even though I do wish they’d update existing ones but I dunno if that is possible. Because we know that they CAN make stunning animations from the starter’s signature moves, to the cutscenes, to the legendary signature moves. Heck even the unique z moves in the gen7 games were fun to look at. Point is GF IS ABLE to make amazing animations, plus they’d only have to do it once, once it’s done they can just put it into future titles. Obviously I’m aware GF has a schedual and deadlines to meet, but that still doesn’t take away from my point, GF is able to do it, they just choose not to and that’s what’s so dissapointing.

I noticed something about the Charizard animation: when he’s grounded, you actually see the height difference between the player character and Charizard and you see that Charizard is not that tall. So, maybe GF might keep Zard in the air so that they can hide that better?

Thing is he didn't even need to change or animate the models. All those grounded animations are already in the game files. All he did was mod them so they were used as the idle instead of the flying ones. That's what makes it even more annoying, is just how absurdly simple and easy it would have been to do this. With access to the source code I bet it would have taken 1 employee like maybe a weekend to do everything DistantKingdom has done so far and more. But gamefreak couldn't be assed and everyone bought it anyway proving them right.

1:28 Removed in the following generation? They didn't even wait that long. ORAS included no Sky Battles, and granted, it was a remake, but it's hardly as if it didn't incorporate any new gen6 features. Most ironically, they're perhaps the only mainline Pokemon games to date that actually features wild battles in the sky. Hell, even within XY itself, Sky Battles were so much of a pointless gimmick that you couldn't even do them indefinitely. There's only a small number you can do in the game, all completely optional, and once you do all of them, they're gone. No option to rebattle, no feature in multi-player, you're just unable to do them for as long as you keep that save file.

Scyther should be grounded, but in the context of the animations it works fine. Actually, a lot of bug types work better than most flying types because their wings actively flap. First of all, this is absolutely incredible (even though I’m assuming they start flying again while attacking, which isn’t even a bad thing necessarily), but second, and most importantly, grounded Wingull is the single most precious thing to ever exist.

They're far more likely to see a C&D order or be banned from using online functions on the Switch. Which is why fans are annoyed. Something that someone spends an hour doing for free, should not look better than what someone does during a paid eight hour shift.

Companies need to protect their IP's etc, etc. My point was that those people who aren't needing to spend much time modding an animation or model into the game, are showing up the people who are paid to do the same job and don't always do it as well as they could. So when Game Freak claim to be cutting content to improve animations and then don't. But someone mods the game using existing assets and in doing so proves that changes could've easily been made? That's annoying. Especially considering how much money the IP makes and that they're selling paid DLC on top of a pretty bare bones game. People are more than entitled to demand more from a AAA game.

@@iradidrago7010 they already did the work, the grounded animations come from Pokemon Amie/refresh/camp, what distant kingdom is doing is just forcing the game to use those instead with the mod. GF just never took the time to undo the butchering bending over for sky battles caused

I really want gen 4 and 5 remakes but after seeing the mess of a game the devs of gamefreak made I don’t want the absolute beauty of those two games to be tainted by character-less battle animations and lousy overworld/cutscene animations 😔 gen 5 as such a well designed and animated game (not to mention the absolute bop of a soundtrack) doesn’t deserve this fate Not to say that I don’t like SWSH, I like a lot of pokémon designs and concepts however there is a lot I don’t like about the game.

What always bugged me about any flapping animation GF included is that the flapping is too slow to give the illusion that the Pokemon is truly keeping itself airborne solely through its own effort, rather than moving its wings around in some sort of invisible stasis tube. I'd be interested to see what it would look like if you took some of the potentially more believable flapping animations and, instead of completely removing them, sped them up to match more closely what real birds have to do to fly.

I prefer flying animations for Pokemon immune to ground type moves, but they have to be different enough to not feel boring.

No, thats a obvious mechanic. What they should do the Pokemon actually changing to their flying animation when a ground animation occurs and “attack missed”. All of these looks better, specially Skamory, Charizard and that Gen 8 bird.

I mean not all Pokemon with wing and flying type should be grounded, but pokemon like Charizard should be touching the ground. Even Skamory looks hell better in the ground instead gliding in the same spot with no motion at all. Levitate ability pokemons should be floating.
