i also recommend, as someone who reads for immersion a lot, to not look up every single word you do not understand. i know it may be hard starting out bc youre gonna want to know every word, but it will make things less stressful over time. What I do is look up words that seem to appear frequently in whatever i happen to be reading. i dont have much interest in learning japanese, but with spanish and catalan i also love using reading as a way to help contextualize verb tenses. its helped me solidify subjunctive forms, and the various past tenses through context

Yes, I totally forgot to mention that! That's also what I would recommend 😊 Good luck with Spanish!!

I'm keeping this in mind for when I decide to study Japanese. It's on my list but I really should dedicate myself to Korean first. Either way these are good tips for language learning. I'm going to keep it in mind when I pick up my Korean lessons again. It should even help me polish up my French which I'm starting to lose due to lack of practice. Great video as always 🥰 and congrats on the sponsorship 😁

Excellent tips! Thank you so much for your content! I must say that the sole existence of kanji made me believe that it was simply not possible to learn Japanese through watching/reading media. Luckily, my love for otome games led me here! Your videos are such a great source of motivation! Now I am finally ready to get my hands on some lovely albeit untranslated games and enjoy my Japanese journey~

You're welcome! Glad I could be of help! For me it was similar, I used to be so afraid of kanji! But now...they still are intimidated at times, but I know I'll learn them eventually and playing the game is more important to me ☺️ Hearing that my channel is motivational is one of the biggest compliments for me, thank you! Good luck on your journey! Which game will you play next?

This was so interesting! I actually study Japanese in university but eh it's not done in the best way and while I'm alright with kanji I'm not great on grammar and sentence structure, so this method could be perfect for me! I love otomes and one of my main goals with my japanese learning is to be able to play them in japanese too lol so thank you for this video !!

It's such a pleasure to see a channel like yours dedicated to immersive language learning. You give excellent tips in the video for picking up new vocabulary. I began learning Japanese back in 2017 in order to read untranslated otome games, but it felt like I was making no progress for the longest time. My Anki habits were atrocious and I burned out on many games. Now I can play things like 999 and Scarlet Nexus with relative ease. It's all a matter of putting the time and effort in. Looking forward to your next video :)

Thank you for the huge compliment 🥰 I also have the worst anki habits 😅 hope this time I'll be able to stick to my new found tips That's amazing! Congrats! Is there anything you would recommend to new learners or something that changed the game for you?
@aabz69842 жыл бұрын
@@LinLinLavender Sure, I have several suggestions! I apologize for the incoming wall of text. Establish a strong foundation on Hiragana. You'll want to recognize them like the back of your hand. They'll serve you well if you put in the time. Know how to build a Kanji in Jisho/ Akebi/ wherever. There are a finite number of radicals used when structuring any Kanji. The sooner you can recognize the parts and put them together in a Kanji builder, the sooner you'll be able to differentiate similar looking Kanji (時、待つ、持つ). Read aloud as often as possible. This will engage your brain more and get you to the point where pronouncing kanji is a less daunting task. You'll get faster and faster. Like you said in step 2, the importance of level appropriate material can't be stressed enough. If you're adding hundreds of Anki words per study session, you're probably biting off more than you can chew (looking at you, Tales of Berseria from 2017). It might feel productive since you're mining so many words, but you could be consuming simpler material and making greater progress in your language learning during that time. You can always return to the tough stuff in a year and amaze yourself with how much easier it's become. Learning Japanese is a marathon, not a sprint. Strike a healthy balance between learning new vocabulary AND grammar. The good news is, grammar points eventually run out. Vocabulary is forever :) You'll solve a lot of grammar confusion by getting a firm understanding of verb conjugations early on. There's also Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese: Learn Japanese, which structures all the grammar basics in a logical order. Highly recommend. For words that have multiple definitions (like 行く), don't force yourself to learn all 10+ different definitions off of one card. Keep all the definitions on your flashcard but put a star/ asterisk next to the definition that contextually applies to the sentence you mined it from. You'll learn additional definitions by encountering them naturally. No need to rush it. Screen capture software that recognizes sentences is great for breaking down a sentence into its individual parts. However, rather than copy-pasting it onto your flash card, consider manually typing out your mined sentences with either the Microsoft Japanese IME or Google Translate. This will give you LOTS of extra active practice and help you recognize common vocabulary and grammar points. It's mind-numbingly tedious at first, but ideal if you're more of a hands-on learner. I promise it gets faster. Probably not advisable for everyone though. Certainly more advanced, but include Japanese definitions on your cards as soon as you're comfortable doing so. A Japanese definition will generally be superior to the equivalent in your native language. Many times an English definition left me puzzled what they were trying to convey, but the Japanese definition captured the meaning much better. Nowadays I include Japanese definitions on every flashcard in the chance I need it. Lastly, you'll benefit immensely from learning with the goal of going from Japanese->comprehension vs. Japanese->your native language->comprehension. This makes a huge difference in the speed at which you can move through your source material. You'll need that level of comprehension if you're hoping to eventually set a VN on auto or watch anime without pausing. You'll be sacrificing 100% comprehension, but it's important to be able to jump back on the proverbial horse mid-sentence even if you get lost briefly. This is more of an intermediate goal, but you can always start working on it early.

@LinLinLavender2 жыл бұрын
Yay, milestone 😆 I can understand that! Nevertheless I recommend you try it out for a week or so, because it really helped me so much! And it doesn't take that long...a minute for each card? So if you learn 10 words a day, that's 10 more minutes, but in my case I'm learning a lot faster now, so it was worth the "extra" time - in the end I spend less time learning more But of course, if you already have a good experience, then there is no need to change it ☺️

Thank you so much! 🥰 Oh yes, I remember! Hm, I think that's really hard to tell and depends on your goals...like do you want to work in Japanese or play Japanese games? If so, how much? Learning a language always means sacrificing other things you then don't have the time for anymore.. it's a huge commitment and takes a looong time. That said I think that EVERYONE is in theory able to learn a new language, you just have to find a way that works for you. So what exactly didn't work out?

Thank you for the video!! I'm a migaku user too. I was so enthralled by this wonderful tool. But for some times, I stopped using it because I'm waiting for the moment, we'll be able to catch only the word we need in a sentence... Because I'm loosing so much time erasing all the words in the sentence I chose.........And because of that, mining had become really troublesome.... But th system is really really good and I'm looking forward to use it again for the VN or anime.

It's really so helpful! I think the only solution is to mark all the other words in then sentence as known (by hovering over them and pressing k), then you only guy the one word you don't know in the card I think that's why they recommend to only add sentences, where you only don't know one word I'm also looking forward to the VN add on? This video was really good and I will send to a friend to watch right now! But I do think you should have mentioned how to get basic grammar by reading Tae Kim guide for exemple. There is a big misconception that to learn japanese and grammar you need a textbook that not everyone can buy(like myself that lives in a third world country). But even tho they are good it is not necessary at all, you can literally learn for free. Anyway, I am on this journey myself. I started immersion after maturing 1k words from a deck I got reddit (Jo-Mako's Vocabulary - Core Anime Deck) and by just reading Tae Kim's guide basic section. After that was just from random videos here and there + immersion + studying anki daily. I think my immersion deck has over 4k works with a mix of animes, j-rpgs and visual novels. But it took me months to actually starting doing that i've spend months on and off until for some reason I started and couldn't stop anymore. Anyway I'm very excited for future content and I might try out otome media since I never experience myself and I don't mind a cute boy in a love story at all. ;3
