I have traveled to 100 countries over 1,270 days of backpacking the world. Japan is MY number 1. I have been 3 times and each time it has felt like a "home" a bit more. I also flew JAL F on points last year, was an unreal experience.

Been to many nations as well, not nearly as many as you but for work as a commercial pilot based in the US. Japan is also my favorite place to visit/stay at. Yes KZbinrs and their commenters love to over-exaggerate the problems in Japan. Whether it is because of a spike in Chinese shareholders, clickbait, or that they know people will click on anything Japan....It seems way overblown out of proportion. It has gotten to a point where they need to fabricate statistics and outright lie about this beautiful place and its people. Conversely, doing business with the Chinese is akin to pulling your teeth out. The cultural differences exist. Many European nations were my favorite until recent years...Hoping Japan stays Japanese because that's what makes a nation great. Its people, its blood, and its culture which are all intertwined.

I love Kyoto, but over tourism has killed it :( Thankfully there are hundreds of small towns that deserve the tourism and while they may not pack the same punch that Kyoto has, can be enjoyed in a more serene setting. I visited Kakunodate just outside Iwate this year. It's a mini Kyoto and barely has a bus load of tourists.

I always describe Tokyo to my friends in the US as 23 boroughs mashed together in an area roughly the size of LA county but the population density of NYC. The scale of the place is crazy on it own, but the thing that really sets it apart is its speed. It makes no sense for that number of people to move around that much that fast that easily.

100% agree with this! People don't realise though that the metro population of Tokyo is still the world's largest (albeit the only one in top 10 in population decline). The population of Metro Tokyo is almost twice the Metro New York population (which includes all boroughs of New York and also includes Newark-Jersey City). At one stage in history Tokyo and Osaka were the two largest cities in the world for population. Tokyo has maintained this whereas others have overtaken Osaka. But for comparison, metro Osaka is the same population as metro New York.

​@@firstnamelastname4824 feeling is certainly different. Japan is a country dominated by collectivism (rather than individualism) and a strong sense of not impacting others as a result. Because of this, there is far less litter, more order and a sense of calm that will make Japanese cities feel far more ordered and calm than equivalent western cities of the same size. So yes, while Osaka and New are similar in size (metro), New York will always feel more busy because a lack of thought and impact on others, and a need to be running ones own way (individualism), tends to present as more chaotic, more noisy, more busy, more dirty. The reason I use "metro population" is that it's a more often use international way of calculating city size. In the US, cities are often measured by their smaller city size, downplaying the population. By using "metro", you're getting the largest possible figure that is more comparable to other cities globally. New York Metro is growing to nearly 20 million making it enter top 10, and at this moment in time it's actually just overtaking a receding growth of Osaka (which was over 20, and is getting smaller). I`ll add to the clean part, Tokyo is extremely clean. Like I did not see garbage anywhere. And it`s all because the people there are so respectful. There are almost no trash cans, the culture itself is just amazing. People do not loiter. Also the public toilets are plentiful, FREE, and clean! And the park gardens are absolutely gorgous. Often I felt more calm, in this clean beautiful, enormous (world largest) and extremely busy city. then in my hometown with just 500 000 residents.

Yeah that's on the surface for the tourists who don't try to look further. In reality you see dirty places everywhere even in places tourists go. Next time when in Shibuya near the Hachiko famous meating point, simply look where people sit. Tourists don't go to the really dirty parts in Shibuya or elsewhere. People often throw their trash in bicycles baskets. Then the rest is cleaned by an army of elderly people who clean all day behind people because they can't afford surviving on their retirement pension alone. That's how Tokyo remains clean for you. What you call public toilets aren't public toilets. They are usually in train stations so they are including in the very expensive price people pay, or in department stores. These aren't public places. Now go to the actual public toilets for instance in small parks where kids play, again places where tourists never venture, that's another story on cleanliness.

I will answer your three questions 1. The hotel is definitely an APA group of hotels. The designs on the wall are a giveaway. They have multiple branches in Japan. They include complimentary breakfast for that 70 USD 2. Second is capyneko Cafe. It is located close to Kichijoji Station. 3. The name of the fishing restaurant is called zauo fishing restaurant. It is close to Nishi Shinjuku station.

I think there are at least 50 GOAT countries..... but I'd say Japan offers much more diversity than anywhere else. The US has a lot of diverse natural beauty, but very difficult to cover the large distances to see it. Australia is similar and just as hard to cover. I think one thing letting the US down sadly (having spent 2 months there this year, and 5 months in Japan), is that for a wealthy country, it's sad to see such high levels of poverty and crime. Japan might be the safest country in the world, but the US isn't safe among the developed world. The US is also 3 to 4 times the price for a tourist needing to factor in tax and 20% tip. 2 months in the US cost me almost twice as much as 5 months in Japan. (little tip..... suggest Europe or Australia if you want to see western cities - safer, cheaper, cleaner)

I usually live in Tokyo and twice a year, I go to Hawaii or one of the islands near Japan to take a break from the big city. But still, one of the safest, the most inexpensive places on earth is Tokyo!

You know, instead of buying tickets, you could just buy either a PASMO or a Suica IC Card so that you don’t have to keep buying those easy-to-lose individual tickets every time you are about the enter the ticket gate. Instead of inserting the ticket into the gate, you just tap on the illuminated blue circle that says “IC”. IC cards, unlike tickets, only need a reload by the time you’ve ran out of fare balance therefore reducing the need to approach the ticket vending machines from time-to-time. Please do this the next time you visit Japan, it will make your trip much easier.

This is a great tip. But worth nothing that due to IC chip shortage, there are no IC cards on sale to tourists anymore (they're not even purchasable from machines any more). Easiest way for a tourist is either: 1. If you have an iPhone and a mastercard credit card, add a Suica in your wallet and charge it a small amount using Mastercard. Further charges can be done in Japan using any retailer than accepts IC cards. 2. From the airports only, you can purchase a Welcome to Japan Suica. This is a temporary IC card and will expire in 31 days (pointless for many tourists that stay here a couple of months)

don't go to the ramen museum we want to share n they won't let us so we ordered our own n taste it like 2 bites n left - almost untouch - taste is all we do because a lot of things we want to eat but if we really eat we can't try that many ----------------- we timed it to be at the busiest crossroad on wk end n we lay down to take pic - n bought some disposible bbq grill n had picnic at the park - so happy one of our hotel got a 7eleven where one entrance is into the hotel n one out to the st love it

Being an American with a car, I can EASILY say New York city was the most aggravating frustrating, inconvenient, expensive, stressful place I ever tried to live. 5000 a month for 1 bedroom apartment, 700 a month for parking space, 400 a month for car insurance, 300 a month for public transportation, and you can add up the rest for food, utilities, and other bills. As far as visiting. I enjoyed Los Angeles a million times better than New York too. I mean, it doesn't charge you over 20 dollars to drive into the city like piece of trash New York
