Alfred was who he was, same as Samuel. Not everyone can be a Tristan. I think the Colonel was a lot like Vito in The Godfather. He mixed all of these varied traits together well enough in one man, but they were split between his three sons and manifested as extremes.

I wouldn't say Brad Pitt exactly "Won" in life. The woman he actually loved murdered, losing his brother, having to forfeit his children because of the murders of the O'banion's, and being mauled to death by a bear...Whereas sure Alfred may have lost his wife but he was a wildly wealthy Congressman who eventually earned his fathers love and respect by the end of the film and two sons. They both had tragedy but of course, Tristan clearly had more.

I've seen this movie many times and I think one of the biggest lessons that it gives about life in general, is to never play favorites within your family. Obviously sometimes we feel drawn to certain members moreso than others but its also important not blatantly show it. That in turn creates tension, anger and resentment in some cases goes unresolved. I have family who have passed on that I never felt truly close to due to their favoring of others they weren't silent about. It does more harm than you realize.
@DivineLogos

Parents will always have favorites and it will always show. The true reason is comparison by children. Comparison is the thief of joy. It shouldn't matter one sibling is loved more, what matters is if you are loved at all.

I was triggered to watch this movie again after many years.. something my brother said.. What if the rules are the problem, what if Alfred was following the wrong ‘rules’ - Tristan was a good brother and a good man, but troubled by trauma, especially after loosing his young brother while going against in what he believed and treasured. He fought and did everything he could to protect Samuel. He had to cut him open to take his heart to send to his familiy as he knew it would be all he could do at that point and in alignment with what the indian had tought him. Devastating... Tristan followed his heart and his intuition. When he was troubled and wreaking havoc in his life he left all that was dear to him to heal by himself. Some call it selfish, but you might also acknowledge he was unable to deal with the pain among his family. Alfred was a decent character but often resentful from the start.. you see his judgement at several scenes.. he fell in love with his young brothers’ fiance and showed it. In spite of knowing she had loved both his brothers and not him, he insisted in marrying her. Wrong rules, he deserved better than that for sure, but you cannot bend reality that much. He was in some sense disrespectful to everyone including himself, although he did not realize it... he comes around at the end. In another painful way.. tragedy.

This is why you never become the nice guy but don’t become a bad boy, either. Look at them both- in their misery. You must learn to become a good man: who has nice qualities and FIERCE, when necessary. Think of William Wallace.

That quote, personally I think it is the best quote in any movie I've seen&btw I watch alot of movies on Netflix, I like it because it relates to alot of sibling rivalries, jealousy,&how alot of girls tend to love the "bad boy" instead of the "nice guy", I found that scene the most haunting of all the scene in the movie because it revealed how lonely Alfred was in the shadow of Tristan

Fuck dude, i know this is 4 years late but im gonna reply anyway. After my gf watched this movie she was in love with Tristan and i asked her......why? She replied "because Tristan is a man that's not afraid of anything and he took risks". From that moment i understood, there's 2 sides to every story. On the one side they want a good man that will not cheat on them like Alfred. On the other their fantasy is a man like Tristan.
@Bazookatone1
@Bazookatone1 7 жыл бұрын
That's fair enough, but I submit that those are precisely Tristan's flaws, not strengths. Tristan isn't afraid, sure, but true courage is having fear and overcoming it - he doesn't possess real courage, just a reckless gung ho bravado. When he's off drinking instead of staying with Samuel (because he's not afraid of the consequences), Samuel gets killed. When he's not afraid of the bootleggers, it indirectly leads to Isobel's death. And, yes, he takes risks, but those risks are primarily for his own short term gratification (fighting the bear as a child, trying to tame the spirited horse, scalping the enemy soldiers to assuage his own guilt, running bootleg liquor to get one over the the government), and not the benefit of the family he claims to love. The more I learn of the traits of sociopaths and narcissists, the more I think that Tristan fits the description perfectly.

Exactly! I'm sure that we've all known people who do whatever they please and are lauded as "free spirits" or some such label, but to me the real strength is the man who stays and weathers the storm, provides for those he's responsible for or takes care of the elderly parent. There are times when I'm sure we would all like to just chuck it and say screw it I'm leaving. That's why this scene is so powerful to me. The people who stay and tough it out are rarely acknowledged while the Tristans seem to receive the love and praise. IMHO.

Alfred conformed to the rules because of fear and wanting acceptance and love. Tristan broke the rules but was at least true to himself. Alfred did the right thing for the wrong reasons. Nobody can relate to Tristan. The guy is super handsome, knows how to do everything and everybody falls for him. How many people in real life are like that? Samuel and Alfred are the more human characters, with their flaws and weaknesses. Maybe the script is about that as well: the struggle to achieve something that you can't and the resignation and acceptance of who you are, without succumbing to sadness, pain and envy.

It amuses me to read all the comments below. That's the beauty of any forms is of storytelling. The death of the author, cos we always connect with or relate to the story, the characters, by putting our own's to it. I think one is entitled to his/her own opinion - so all views here are, to me, valid. As for me, the only "villains" in the story are the two greedy people who came towards the ending, all ended up being killed. Whilst the core characters represent the classic human path of self discovery. The protagonist here is LOVE, whether it's fatherly love or romantic love or love to oneself, the latest being the most important. Everybody here is on the path to find each true self and not to lose it in the face of passion. All their flaws and foibles are just part of being human. The beauty of being one. I simply failed to see any "villain" in them. All I can see is the various acts of free will and its consequences. I don't attach any values (good or bad), following Taoist principles. It's just the way things are.

But he refused to believe her if I were him after telling Tristan to give him some time to be at Susannah's grave I would let loose on her stone & cussed her out lol. I'll bet there was a scene of Alfred letting out his feelings at her grave Susannah fell for & wanted the bad boy but he pumped her & dumped she went with Mr. Nice Guy. I just had another thought if the roles were reversed & Alfred was the wild one & Tristan was the straight laced guy do you think Susannah still would've went for Tristan?

What about yourself, Alfred? Do you love yourself more? If you did, you would not have married someone who loved your brother. You disrespected yourself in front of your GOD who created and died for you. Why worry about others?

Atleast he got to know in advance who loved him. Don't we just hate men who don't appreciate women and their people who stood by them when they were at their lowest? Hopefully he grew up this time. Or worst case they don't appreciate these people and drop them when they do well or try to steal other people's wives not out of love but greed and malice...well, some men get it i guess?🤷

Alfred redeemed himself. He went to heaven. Tristan, "I am not so sure"..... It is not what you do every day, it is what you do in the all or nothing critical moments of life. And everybody has a few of them. THAT is where the true character shows. (The best movie for boys to watch....)

Io ho odiato Isabel 2 che in un batter d'occhio ha rubato la vita a Susanna e ha reso felice Tristan. Quando Susanna alla fiera vede la loro famiglie felice e nell'andare via si volta a guardarli...che strazio per lei

You did break one of man's rules, Alfred. An unwritten one. Don't love a woman you know loves someone else. That way lies misery.
