As someone who’s been living with a spinal-cord injury for years now... take it from me, get out there - run, bike, walk - just see the world. Because I can’t. And I sure miss that space, that freedom, everything about the release. Not just running on the beach with my dog, but that - that most of all.

This is so true, waking up at 4am is a very ideal time, and the period between 4.30 to 7.30 am in the morning is so quiet and the focus at that point is tremendous. Proven! Even a non-morning person should give it a try, no harm. It just needs practice. For those of who you that think that studying at night is better, its the same reason studying at that particular period in the morning is efficient!

Also I noticed you were doing static stretching to warm up, try out a dynamic stretching warm up routine after a 5-10 minute very slow run as your warm up. Static stretching should be for cool downs. I have been working on my novel for a year and a half and I had never written for more than two hours. It was super counter productive for me because I would get cocky or get too caught up. I read a few Murakami books on and off through the years but I have been completely focusing on one writer every month and reading all their stuff probably since last November. I was reading Murakami this December and I had been googling his interviews, listening to jazz music, dreaming about going to his jazz club (lol) and meeting him and hanging out and getting tips on my novel and I bumped into this video. I want to thank you for this because this (idea which is not a new idea but an idea in the right place at the right time) has completely changed my schedule. Now I am incorporating the new (monthly) writer's daily routines and it's so much fun. My schedule was the complete opposite to Murakami's because I used to wake up at two, start drinking at 7, and sleep around 3. It was kinda difficult (really difficult) for me but when I did wake up early, did the run, and start writing, it had this weird energy like some kind of hack had been implemented. Yesterday, I wrote for 6 hours and it was good writing and I know when it's not good writing. Today it was shit because it's New year's eve here and I had plans lol. Anyways Thank you so much and I have followed you and will check your other videos out and happy new year and lots of love and encouragement from Nepal on your writing. xx

Have only read Norwegian Wood so far and i felt that a little of that with Reiko. A friend once mentioned in a discussion that Murakami's women are are not their own characters but a sort of release for the male protagonist who often tends to paint them all in a singular shade. She was very frustrated with 1Q84 and Kafka on the shores. @@SaffariRose I agree that there is something weird about his "women", but the male characters are also not that 3d. I've read 1q84 and Kafka on the shore and it's like I'm reading about the same characters. He just seems to have a specific image in his mind, perhaps himself with his ideal version of a woman. But I like his writing, and I think his take on abuse towards women by men on 1q84 was good. I mean he has a strong opinion about the matter and I didn't expect to see this view from a man.

@SaffariRose 3 жыл бұрын
@@AD-qq9bk to be honest, there's also that other discussion that once you've read one of his books, you've practically read them all. Lol. So you are absolutely spot on. He rearly deviates in his characterizations. 1Q48 remains one of his most revered books and what you just explained is one of the reasons. There seemed to be a bit more balance in the telling where each character had a 'purpose' so to speak (trying really hard not to spoil the book for those haven't read it but I'm sure you understand what I mean). I do enjoy his writings but more so for his aesthetic and tone of voice. After reading Sputnik Sweetheart, I stopped looking to him for deeper moral insights, least of all from a woman's perspective.

I've always wondered how Murakami manages to write as much he does and now it makes sense - witout all that discipline and structure in his routine it would be impossible. Also well done for completing this as adapting to a schedule which is very different from your usual one is a challenge

I felt like the main point of 'what I talk about when I talk about running' (and even 'Novelist as a Vocation') was that habits are the key. The first months writing/running were bad for him too, but that's the thing, it becomes easier every day. Putting yourself in this specific headspace daily will make your body and mind more and more adjusted and efficient at it. I really enjoyed the video, but it would've been nice to see you try it longer, so it really becomes a habit to live this way (not that I could do it tho, that's why I would like to see it :p )

Gosh, It makes sense now. I've tried some productive routines but it usually goes wrong... but is because on day two I feel awful, day three too so on day 3 I tend to get an overdose on dopamine so I don't get that shift you got soo on day four I don't have the motivation to continue. Damn this didn't seem bad when I thought of it, but written is obviously nonsense how I was doing it. I'll take your example, now I understand my body needs time to accommodate. Thank you!

It has shown how I'm damaging my life, sitting on my desk every day since the moment I wake up to the next morning, eating garbage and "safe" in my room. So interesting! Murakami is my favorite author and I didn’t know about his schedule. In some ways it makes sense. He’s such a clear and confident novelist and I can see how a regular schedule helps him achieve that. Kafka on the Shore was his first novel I read. Thanks for the video! 👍

You are a wonderful young storyteller. I think Murakami would very much appreciate this experiment/ homage. I always find that when assessing other's routines and schedules, it's important to remember that what works for them won't necessarily work for you. So running 10k every day, may work well for Murakami, as he is an ex- marathoner, and has a long history with running throughout his life. Similarly, waking up at 4am is something that suits some people far more than others. Through trial and error, finding the routine that works well for you, much like when you got to the end of day three, things just click into place, and everything makes sense! Keep up the good work!

"that is worst, running without music" I feel you! Anyways, I've read 2 Murakami books till date: Norwegian wood: it was like a weird dream-reality. The sadness came in waves. The book became a part of me and I couldn't get over it for a few weeks. I couldn't read another book for a while. That's about all I'll about it for now. Also the song Norwegian Wood has a similar melancholic, old school vibe to it. Kafka on the shore: one word, "satisfying". As strangely sexual and sprinkled generously with fantasy it was, it was definitely a page turner. Murakami binds a spell in you. I took my time with this one, completed it over a few months. Yeah, I'm a little embarrassed. I did not enjoy the song as much though. Also kudos on the video man, it was well made.
