I always thought that, while Karen may be a complete airhead, she is probably a great friend. She’s always happy, goes with the flow, and was the least drama-prone of all the Plastics. Sure, she got pulled into drama but even when asked if she’d want to know if someone said something bad about her, her first response was “No.”

I might have thought the same when I was younger when the movie first came out, but now that I'm older (39) I learned that she actually isn't a good friend either. She is an integral piece to the creation of a toxic group; the apathetic leaf in the wind who lets the bullies run her life. Karen doesn't form her own opinion, doesn't use her voice, doesn't stand up for her friends, and doesn't have an apparent compass of what is right or wrong (hooking up with her cousin??) and you don't want a friend like that. It would have been nice if there was more fleshed out development of both Karen and Gretchen.

The movie’s message was to show how everyone in some sense can be a “mean girl.” Karen’s vibes were very much remind me of the quote “All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” Silence and absent-mindedness alone can do enough damage.

Mean Girls is The Hateful Eight of chick flicks. Not really, but it is that rare film that simultaneously seems of its time yet universally timeless in its themes and grounded character archetypes. This movie transcends genre and gender line demographics. Everybody loves this masterpiece. And, this is an action movie.
