Been watching Erik’s channel for a while now and just subscribed to yours. As an older timber framer I want to thank you guys for keeping the skills alive and well. I have a few axes from Gransfor Buk that I’ve had mixed results with but the ones you’re turning out look great!

An amazing adze. The final scene where two superb craftsmen enjoy a few moments together as a reward was a fitting final moment. I have been watching Erik’s work from the start. Well done both of you.🏆👍 Watching from Australia.😁

The flared adze was used in ship building for many different tasks, including to hew (fairing) the frames before fitting the planks. The flares are there to sever fibres when cutting across the grain. An adze with straight corners will just get stuck in the wood when cutting across the grain. Adzes with a curved edge profile can cut across without getting stuck, but each cut will create a distinct scallop in the wood surface. The flared adze can cut an almost completely smooth surfce both lengthwise and across grain. I believe they were also used when building railways, when fitting the rails to the railway sleepers (-ties, american english) Some of these adzes has a spike at the neck, wich I think was used to adjust the sleepers on the ground, -if you jam the spike into the sleeper you can lift it slightly and adjust it without having to bend over to pick it up. After that you just wigglw the spike loose and continue your adzing.

Nice adze. You might consider shortening the handle so you can straddle the log and swing between your legs. I find this to be a much more comfortable and efficient angle at which to use an adze for this purpose.

Nice one mate!! Looks the goods! Anytime you feel like coming "down under" we'll chuck a few extra snags on the barby, maybe even a shrimp or two!! Of course a few tinnies on ice won't go astray.... an yarn away the evening! Just one question mate, how do your addze perform on eucalyptus wood?? Got a bit of spotty gum I need to whittle down a bit for a keel of a boat.... cheers, from the land down under..... (If you're upside down)😂

Nice to see you turn your hand to something different! Question though, keeping your drift inside the heated axe for so long, does it not start to soften the drift?

Depends what steel you are using for the drift. My drifts are generally made out of 4340, i have use it under the power hammer for months and have uet to see it deform
