I found a *HUGE JADE* boulder on the Fraser River

I found a new spot to hunt jade o the Fraser river. and new fresh ground really paid off, with many great finds including this one HUGE boulder. Basically as big as I can carry. Yes they come bigger on the Fraser, but anything bigger than this and I can not get it out. So for me this is as big as it comes.

I know that feel of not being able to stop, absolutely. I got the same problem. x) A couple weeks ago I was on vacation on a volcanic island for a couple weeks, and I discovered a pile of tailings left behind from carving roads into the mountains - and that was probably among the top 3 areas I've ever visited in my life for rockhounding. I found so much botryoidal, druzy chalcedony, mostly pink and purple and in rather big chunks, as well as some really nice sand roses, that I could barely carry the backpack back into the hotel every time I was over there. The main problem was... the allowed weight for my luggage on the way back was only 20 kg, and around 10 kg of that was already clothing and stuff. So I really, really needed to sort out the nicest ones and I thought I'd ask the hotel if I could set up a little corner where other people in the area could just grab the pieces that I couldn't carry back home but unfortunately they were against it. :< So I ended up burying them in a small desert area nearby for when I come back next time, like a pirate.

My daughter brings home incredibly large rocks that she carries out to the mountains and rivers. I have 20-50 pound boulders of jasper, serpentine (she called that one a dragon egg) etc. around the house. I am always amazed at how such a petite person can wrangle such treasures. She even brought me a 9 foot long redwood root that is about a foot in diameter. I think she has telekinesis lol

yo Dan: Back in the day we carved out stout lengths of wood to create "yokes". Shaped to fit comfortably across the shoulders about 3' or so long with a chord on each end dangling hooks that will carry buckets of water or in your case rocks. The loads are balanced and almost hands free and still could use backpack. Mules were us! Happy collecting... man that looks like fun!

I can definitely hear the difference. It reminds me when I used to work at a bank. I could hear the difference between the old dimes made of silver, and the newer ones made of whatever they're now made of. Silver dimes make a distinct sound when dropped on the counter.

My family had a jadein that redibrown skin in the living room In the 70s. Grandma having lived as an expat in China in the 30s had a collection of phenomenal gemstone. Awesome growing up seeing polishedeggs, jade carvings and geodes of all sorts.

You can't find rocks like this in the rivers here, but the last city I lived in was a very old medieval city and when the tide was low in summer you could find lots of pottery shards and other old objects along the banks. Very fun thing to do on a nice summer day.

Any time you say "Serpentine" I get reminded of my watercolor paints, I have a tube that uses ground up serpentine as a pigment, made by Daniel Smith. Seeing as how common this rock is, it makes a lot more sense now to use it for painting and it is one of my favorite colors when painting foliage. There is also a color that uses Jadeite as a pigment but Serpentine is by far my fav.

the rock obsession is ok Dan, one time i found a massive fossil plate on a hunting trip but my saddle bags were already packed right full of fossils (it wouldnt have fit anyway) so i carried this chunk of fossil with me on the saddle for the 3-4 hour ride back to the truck, and across many rivers and steep hills. theres just some rocks that need to come home with you!

while i was stationed in south korea i found this cool green rock in a creek. i liked it because i could see light shine through it and it was fist sized. put that thing in my pocket and walked around some more then found several others that were smaller. some were kinda nice so i grabbed those too. i dropped the glass looking ones because i didn't think they were as interesting looking. the marbly ones appealed to me more. i know it sounds like it was super easy, but it took all day and i basally ruined my shoes. every one of my cool looking rocks was confiscated before i left. turns out they were all jade and i wasn't allowed to pick them up let alone keep any of them. kind of a bummer.

Hello Dan Always love your content. One thing I do when looking for bigger rocks. I pack about a dozen heavy duty cloth grocery bags in my backpack and leave them full along my path. It makes for several trips back and forth to the truck but you might find something else along the way. Can’t wait for the snow to melt in northern Alberta to see what the rivers bring down to find.

Recently got into an on line discussion about nephrite and its close association with asbestos. Jade does have a mono crystalline structure, like asbestos. That means when working jade on a grinding wheel you should definitely be using a mask, the fine particles may be harmful.

Hey Dan, Get Pauly out there to help pack-M. When I find a spot.. it's hard, then harder to pack. I used to have a Front pack along with big pockets and fanny2. (Carmex, spritzer, etc.) Just can't do it anymore. I know you know your stuff, and burden of weight, but when you find just the right spot, it's special. They're not going anywhere, and people don't understand that they can do the same as you, if they take the time to learn about it. I'm sure peeps have walking on them for years but don't realize what it is. Cool that you share it all. Mostly, they watch the Gold. Never recognizing what's under their feet. Always entertaining! This is an amazing river. Gold, Jade, serpentine and more. I imagine Garnet. I do enjoy my time walking and looking for rocks and stones here in Michigan. We have Not only the great Petoskey stone, but the Leelanau green stone, agates galore, Charlevoix, silver in rocks can be found up in Lake Superior. Along with many other minerals and copper. Beautiful Copper Harbor over looks Lake Superior.😊😊 thanks for a great video. The cut jades are just breath taking.

Dan, I would love to see a rock like the one @10:40 put into an abrasive rock tumbler. You could use a polishing media harder than the gem serpentine, but softer than the jade. Imagine polishing the jade free of the serpentine at the transition, you could deduce more about the processes forming the jade! On a side note, is there a process for cooking jade to artificially improve its appearance?

I seem to remember seeing jade sculptures and jewelry selling for $1000's of dollars out of Asian countries. I had walked many gravel bars in B.C. I live in Ontario, but when in your neck of the woods I also find jade and lots of other stones. One that’s called Chinese writing stone and another the is called flower stone I believe, especially on Vancouver island!
