The Motorola Flex pager. Popular in the mid 1990's and still somewhat today. This is from 1996.

I remember my parents had pagers. I was born in ‘93, and I remember seeing pay phones and cell phones with antennas. Just amazing how far we’ve come with technology nowadays

Believe it or not, pagers are still in fairly wide use even today. Aside from restaurants, they are mostly used in areas where instantaneous text communication is necessary but cell phone use is problematic. They are used by firefighters and EMS paramedics in rural areas which have no cell towers. And they are used in hospitals to communicate with doctors in situations when a cell phone could disrupt sensitive medical equipment. Some hospitals even hand out pagers to waiting patients for the same reason restaurants do, so they can leave the waiting room and still be notified when their appointment is ready.

I was born in early 1990s. I was very young kid when I saw pager on TV advertisement and I wanted it so much. My parents told me that I would get it when I grew up. I haven't thought that one day cellphones will be developed to be smartphones like they are today. (That time the cellphones were very expensive.)

Pager networks are still around! In every country, here in Australia they installed a new network in Victoria for emergency services. If the landline or mobile network goes down due to a natural disaster or emergency, the paging network can still send out messages. One major advantage to a paging network is - The transmitters put out 1000w or more, so the signal can penetrate buildings and areas where mobiles can't get reception. In comparison a cellphone base station only puts out 5 watts.

That is old school as hell! I remember when I had one of those back when pay phones were everywhere & land lines.. We would be chillin with our Jordans, gold rope chains, 90s real hip hop, 40s & all of a sudden "damn who keeps blowin up my pager with 911 911 (which meant call back the number fast) or 411 (which meant got some scoop on something) or 420 (which meant got that smoke) I like my smart phone & my jordans still but don't miss the pagers...

Lol, this video is a gem, thanks for sharing. Back in the 90's, my mom used to have a pager, and I remember when she would get a beep, she would use this neighborhood payphone to contact whoever it was who beeped her XD. Oh, old times. Fast forward 15 years and everyone (including babies!) has a smartphone, tablet, IPad, and whatever else is the latest portable trend. With technology growing this fast, I expect Virtual reality to become the next reality, real soon- and that's not a bad thing :)

I still use a pager, and no I'm not a doctor or a firefighter. I find carrying a phone a hassle plus a pager is only $100 a year compared to cellphones at $360+ a year for the cheapest plans. I can replace the pager for $20 and have no contract. Smart phones are $400 and and have contracts, I don't want to carry something that expensive on me.

Also when Pagers where kicking strong they had unlimited plans for like 10 bucks, where cell phones back than had a huge monthly rate and minute charges. I remember taking my mom's cellphone to school to be cool and people making random calls and she got the bill for a few hundred dollars for in state calls. haha

According to a link on pagersdirect which is an online pager retailer, there are still millions of pagers in use within the United States. Apparently as a simple private way to get in touch with someone, pagers are the most inexpensive solution. Makes sense, if a business has 500 employees and they just need one to call in for a specific purpose, they don't need to spend $60/month on a cellphone plan and it's much cheaper to replace a pager than a phone if it's lost or damaged.

Basic lession on pagers, pagers are only one way communication. (basically) But they often run on different frequencies lower than cellphones, (180mhz typically, some ran on 400+mhz) Which give the radiowaves greater penetration in building materials such as concrete. But the main advantage is that, since there is no need for the pager to communicate back to the radio transmitter. Batterylife is better, and you can basically just put on a lot of transmit power and cover a wide service area.

Didnt anyone own a house phone in the 90s??? When my husband was home and work left a mesage then he would just call work from the house not trapes around the streets looking for a call box? And when he was at work he would just use the office or site phones?
