When you sped up the belt, you changed the variables. Now the graphite is hotter(hence the darker shade) which makes it softer and now doesn't last as long.

Don't they use graphite when handling molten glass? Do you think that additional speed was a major variable change? I had the same thought too, then talked myself out of it, now I'm on the fence about it
@tommydragon10
@tommydragon10 3 жыл бұрын
If it did, it would have created minor changes. He didnt go far with the slower speeds of the first pencil, so I dont see that as a cause for the longer distances. I'm sure he used fairly equal pressure with all the writing tools used.. Also with the pencils being sharpened they had frequent breaks to cool down. I feel like there might be some small scew in it but on the flip side I'm sure its marginal in the grand scheme of this expiriment.
@visibletoallusersonyoutube5928
@visibletoallusersonyoutube5928 3 жыл бұрын
The reason the second more expensive pencil went faster was primarily due to the fact that higher quality pencils leave darker lines. The graphite is softer and leaves bolder lines. Cheap pencils are hard.... and he just said what I typed...... there ya go.

@@bigbangattack97 I ordered my mother who made minimum wage to only buy me designer clothes through high school. Started with kindergarten. I was six years old. First day in, I had to wear ratty old cut off shorts from when my brother was younger. After the other kids teased me relentlessly, I went home and told my mom we're going to Beverly Hills for some shopping. She said, "But we can't afford that!" So, I grabbed her by the hair, pulling her face close to mine, and said, "look, if you want me to succeed in life, I need expensive clothes. I don't care if you steal them, take a loan out on the house, suck dick for a living, or whatever the fuck. GET. ME. MY. CLOTHES." To which, her response was putting me over her knee and giving me 50 spanks. Luckily, though, soon after that incident, my mother won the lottery and took me shopping. The first week was a bit rough, though, until she managed to finally win.

@staccatopeony
@staccatopeony 3 жыл бұрын
The colour does not make a difference here, a pen and a pencil create marks on the paper in different ways. A pencil contains a graphite core which rubs off on paper, leaving a grey mark, when pressure is applied. A ballpoint pen however contains liquid ink, which is transferred out of the pen onto the paper where it dries up, leaving a coloured mark. There are also many other factors to consider, such as the pressure used whilst drawing, or the angle at which it is used. Colour is not a reliable factor, graphite density or the viscosity of the ink may change the shade of the mark made, but manufacturers may use a variety of dyes or chemicals to change the colour which have no effect on the longevity of their product.

More expensive pencil usually have better quality graphite in it, and usually lay the "color" smoother and darker than the cheaper ones even if they have the same scale of hardness (the number on pencils). Each manufacturer have their own scale of hardness for their graphite. So for example, an HB pencil from one brand might be smoother and darker than the an HB pencil from other brand. Other than that, the changes on velocity caused higher friction between the graphite and the paper which forced his hands to hold the pencil down harder.

There should have been a mechanism to hold the pencils and pens in place. Doing it by hand gives an uneven amount of pressure being used and also changing the speed of the belt has to change the level of friction back onto the pencils and pens for sure. I hope Chay can redo this with that in mind as I don't see this as being a very accurate result in my mind, roughly good enough though

The expensive pencil is more expensive because the graphite is bound softer. This will result in a darker line that is easier to draw with. If used in normal writing, the text will last longer on the page without getting rubbed off and it should be higher contrast for easy reading. As the graphite is bound softer, it makes sense that it would wear down quicker. More graphite is left on the page with every stroke.

Well seeing as all of the pencils and the pen were brand new (or so I think) this is accurate to some point. For the no.2 pencils, usually what I've found is that if you press harder on them while drawing/writing, they'll lose lead quicker than if you were to just lightly drag it across a canvas. So really, if you alter how hard you press on the pencils, the lead will be gone quicker. Usually the mechanical pencils I get have about 2-4 more peices of lead in addition to the first one, but how long the pencil can draw for is based off of how many peices of lead you have in the pencil and how hard you press when using it. It was mentioned that the lead liked to break when it went over the tape, so that alters the final result of that too. For the pen, I cant really think of anything that would alter the results of it other than if the pen was one of the pens with the multiple different colors. I have taken into consideration the point of altering how much lead/ink the pencil or pen has, but to be fair, the video title says how long can the pencils go, so if you were to add a lot of lead into the mechanical pencil or you had a multiple colored ink pen, since it's still the pencil or the pen, those wouldnt neccesarily be off the table
@uwerlmi6120
@uwerlmi6120 3 жыл бұрын
This was inaccurate because the paper had the rough treadmill material which made it worse, he also had the pencil draw diagonally which is a longer distance than the straight line measured, the pencils also weren't finished to the end, and the treadmill was going faster than you'd usually write, causing it to finish faster and have a higher chance of breaking. That's why google shows different results.

with the frixion erasable pens you could probably only go around at max 20 turns. those burn out in 3-4 days over a week if you are lucky

They make lead pencils in different diameters, it looks like the one you were using is a .07mm, I think that's the most common. I think a .20mm would be closer to the lead in a wood pencil and may last longer than the .07mm. You could do a comparison of the different size lead pencils, .05, .07, .10, and .20mm. Since this was two years ago you've probably moved on to bigger and better things, I hope.

I don't know what no.2 means on a pen, but I know surely, that B, HB and H means the hardness of the led. The scale goes from several B-s to several H-s. 3B is very soft, for art purposes, 3H is really hard for like blueprints, and engineering stuff. The price should only differ according to brands, and quality.

I have a hunch that the increased fiction from upping the speed is adding in a factor to your experiment. I would guess that's why the second pencil went down faster.

A big factor is how much pressure you apply, because the harder you push down the faster it drains

Because you do a lot of long challenges, you should try to cut trough a pencil by drawing on it with a pen or another pencil.

I think the expensive one is intended to lose more graphite with each line since that makes it darker

Cool experiment but you failed on the amount of preasure has to be applied from the pencil to the surface. If you press hard you will lose more particles vice versa.

I wonder if he used the same softness of pencil, the packaging on one of them says HB, while the expensive one looks like a 2B. You can get different softness of pencil lead as well.

Breh why’d they think a pen would last longer. If you had a pen you’d know how short it’s life span is compared to this random pencil that lasted for years.
