As many mentioned on PLA, I only use it for fast prototyping as it's cheap and I also use an ugly colour just to make sure It stays as prototype. Once I'm happy I go to the final material ASA, PETG, or PET CF, I would probably recommend ASA or PET CF for car interior parts, but that depends on your printed capability and if you have an enclosure.

This is awesome. I had the same idea about 10 years ago. I tried LED's, fibre optics, PICAXE chip on a custom board with SMLED's more. I then had to grind out the top of the gear cap to get room and cut out the numbers to get the light to show through. but then that light would show across all the numbers and I needed a way to fill the numbers with something clear. Then I got a 3D printer and hopes of finishing my project where raised again. while this did allow me to get closer, I still had problems with it all. getting power up to the 'display' getting the chip to decode signals from the 5 switches the LED's being mounted in a way for two colours with out bleeding through. Now I find you project and I'm going to have to copy you as what you have done is awesome and I have learned so much watching your videos. I can't wait to see your finished product. Keep up the good work! Oh mine will be going into a VW T5 camper van when I get it done.

It would be awesome if someone would take this even further by making it able to track the shifter location itself so you won't even need to take any info from the car(about which gear its in). Also, I think it'd be nice if you create a couple different iterations of shifter types such as ones that have the reverse gear on the left (many Volkswagen). For alternative visuals Mercedes, Audi, Renault, Fiat, Citroen, Peugeot, MG, DS, Land Rover, Seat, Skoda, Bentley and Jaguar are good options for Europeans. All these would take too much time tho lol.

I see Upir’s response, and if anyone could figure it out here I think it’s him, but I don’t think it would be as reliable without the tcm being the source of the current gear information. It would be cool, but if you’re slamming through gears, of course because some kid thinks his civic with the only aftermarket parts being his muffler and the fake hood pins is faster, then I feel like the accelerometer may have a difficult time. What if you almost miss fifth and money shift into third but happen to slam it over just barely touching the entrance to third and grinding the stick on the flat over to fifth? I feel like it may have some problems with that. I think you automatics that have the auto stick/manual shifting mode that uses the shifter to push left for up and right for down it might work.

Fantastic project, this randomly got dropped in my KZbin feed. You did mention it at the end, so you're probably going that route anyway, but I would highly suggest going with any ESP32 board with enough pins (should be almost all of them). Just to have a microcontroller with a clock speed that isn't from the 90s. More memory is nice, but that work is done now anyway (and I would have used an approach like yours anyway). It does also solve the color-problem where you said "doing this color tinting in the proper way would take too much CPU cycles", with easy.

Very nice tutorial. As a computer science student, this video remembered what I seen in the digital image processing class, it's quite a very cool practical introduction to bitmap images in programming. Also, holy moly, this screen is very awesome, it sparked some ideas like integrating this with the OBD2 port existent in cars. My 7th gen Honda Civic (Automatic) have the gear selection as a digital information (since there's a soft illuminated gear selector in the panel), but I'm not sure if the gear data is available in the OBD2 port - my dad is a mechanic so he has a scanner and it don't have the gear information, but could be a limitation from the scanner itself. Despite this, an universal approach would be crossing the data from the engine RPM with the road speed, as the ratio could be calculated to guess the gear the car is gated tho. And yes, I drive an old Honda Civic :D

thank you for this! It's quite refreshing to find a tutorial that actually walks you through the thought process of dealing with memory limitations on a board like the Arduino UNO & show that complex graphical interfaces are possible with a little bit of ingenuity & code-fu 😄 🤔I like both filament options... the black for a little stealth bling & the color changing for a bit of flash. 🐿as for the microcontroller, I'd love to see it on the tiny ATmega328P powered board just to prove that it is good enough for a shift indicator (I feel the ESP would be wasted on the project unless you want it to also send the shifter information to a custom dash or heads up display 👈🤓now there's a fun little potential project) Looking forward to your next steps... perhaps we'll finally see the finished product?

Two vehicles of mine are equipped with manual transmissions; a Ford Mustang GT, and a Nissan Hardbody. Of note, about 10 years ago when I bought my mustang, a popular accessory I found was a digital shift knob, somewhat similar to what you did on your second video about this project, except if I remember correctly, it used a gypo or some type of tilt sensor to know what position it was in, to then show the correct number on the display. You had to "teach" the shift knob where each gear was, and you put the control box inside the shift boot cover. It was also RGB and to change the color, you tilted the control box in your hand until you got the color you wanted, then set it. Maybe using motion detection to identify and display which gear you're in might be worth looking into? Might even end up being more self contained with less wiring and parts (I'm not at all aware how electronics like this work or how big they are however)
@upir_upir

Thank you for your comment and providing additional details, that´s very appreciated! I have seen those digital shift knobs before, but it´s almost impossible to find any more details or high-res photos of even videos. I believe it was done using accelerometer, and while I would like to try that approach as well, I´m little bit worried that the accuracy will be low. I´m definitely trying to explore all the options to choose the simplest version.

That's a nice little display. Sadly I don't currently own any manual transmissions but I kinda want to make a couple soft gauges for my truck ('02 Ferd diesel) with the capability to read both analog sensors and OBD/ISO/etc telemetry and these might be perfect since I'd like to keep the accessory gauge cluster small and unobtrusive. You might want to look around at the STM32 based dev boards, the F103 "BluePill" form factor ones are about the same footprint as a 24 pin DIP and they've got enough horsepower do some fancy effects on a small RGB display. Only downside is it's not an AVR and there's some learning curve versus a proper Arduino, although I believe you can use the Arduino libraries on STM.

Customisable theming idea 1: Use PCX image format with palette and RLE compression with 1 plane. It can be decoded straight into the display without maintaining much intermediate state at all. Punch through transparent images as PCX are a thing as well, then you choose some colour that doesn't occur elsewhere, and by convention the first pixel is the transparent colour. It also supports placement overlays, where the top left coordinate where to place the image is specified in the image file. Theming idea 2: PAWN virtual machine with access to graphics functions. Both these are suitable for an STM32 or something more capable than that. RP2040, ESP, etc

Since you use white images for your labels you could probably use a single channel image and that would allow you to store a second set at a lower intensity (for the grey). Not sure what the encoding is for 16-bit image (5-bits per channel?). You could probably do bit-shift and bit-OR to recreate the color pixels in 16-bit. I think it would be cheaper than the floating point math required for true tinting. You could even go with palette based approach, that's how the old game consoles did it.
