I live in Cincinnati , along the ohio valley are streams that run down the large hills into the river. Excellent clean clay of high quality (the famous Rookwood pottery ) the colors range from grey, to blue, to yellow and orange. Someone gave me a bunch of kilns (To many kilns! I got a shed full, I need to get rid of a few!) Didn't intend to pick up a new hobby

Just let you know you need to purify it for it to be fired at high temperatures without wrecking the kiln you can probably just find some videos basically you need to dissolve it

right that clay could be rich in extremely toxic stuff and be killing her... in which might "not" even be processable... There is a reason people aren't using those clays lol.

umm i'd be careful because dark clays like that can be rich in lead and arsenic. what seems harmless could make you permanently ill. Red clay can be even more toxic, but technically any clay can be very toxic. I'd send a sample off for xray diffraction analysis which only costs like $30 and you'll know if you should be either processing the clay to remove toxic material or just not use it all. Black clay can contain uranium and other radioactive materials as well. Never assume its safe to use. A good indicator its toxic, nothing will grow in it. So if you've been getting sick, i'd take a triple look at the harmless cute clay i am playing with, it might very well be extremely toxic. I could go into ways to cheaply and efficiently process the clay, but there is no point in doing so depending on what is in it, as some toxic elements can get dissolved right on up with the kaolin and produce a even more toxic substance. Simple answer, get a analysis done before deciding to use it and make no mistake that plants can grow in some crazy toxic clays. There is a lot of factors to consider before playing with something, however if you're lucky then the clay will be rich in rarer metals and might produce a higher quality pottery i.e... silver rich clay which would give your pottery antimicrobial properties for food storage. KNOW WHAT YOU"RE PLAYING WITH FIRST!!! The first thing i would go and look at, what does the local surface water test out as, is it drinkable? Where i live we have toxic surface water that is associated to the arsenic sulfide rich clays. Its no joke can be VERY dangerous to play with or become extremely poisonous when firing it or after firing. SAFETY FIRST!!!

Jakestarr, this news of yours surprises me! Where are the clays with lead and uranium and such? That would definitely be something that a Potter would need to avoid. I have been processing my own clay for years here in the Connecticut River valley. Have you any info on any toxins here?
@jakestarr47187 ай бұрын
@@barrylawton7001 The local state geological survey office would have a rough idea. Realize they don't test every single pocket of clay and its more of a generalization. Also they don't generally give hand over information on anything radioactive often. Having a sample of material ran through x-ray analysis can be helpful, the clay is free after all. Just saying be safe! Play it safe! if its just high in a metal like lead, you can dissolve the kaolin up into a solution of hydrogen peroxide, dawn dish soap and water. Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide to water and a dash of soap. It will take the kaolin up like magic, like clay be gone. Anything left is metals but some metals are soluble. That would give you an idea of metal content in the clay. Its a none toxic way of getting an idea of a clays composition for tests, but arsenic travels well in water so caution should always be given. However there is no way to state that any specific pocket of clay is dangerous or not. You could have a iron rich clay deposit and then digging into it hit a slight color difference and it be rich in arsenic protected from water by the other clay. Just know what you got and go from there

@slithra2275 ай бұрын
They're everywhere, you're probably putting out a rancid aura by complaining about the other women around you. Girls don't find that behavior attractive, even if you're complaining about women they dislike, because it gives off the vibe that you're hypercritical and don't engage in other people's interests. Ie women don't wanna be treated like specimens and don't wanna be around a dude who only wants "girls that don't act like other girls."
