Thank you for your heartfelt video. This is so interesting and so moving. I guess in a very small way, I am a bit like you, I mean, I never felt I belonged with my own people, I grew up in Algeria and wanted to go and live in the US but ended up living on my own in France (and I still am since then) first for my studies, and also in the UK for 2 years and having friends from all over the world. You speak of the American dream, but this seems exactly like the Algerian dream and the french dream too. I always say I consider myself a citizen of the world, because that's really who I am deep down inside and whom I always was. Since my youngest age, as far as I remember, I've always been attracted to other cultures, others way of life (Senegal, French West Indies, and of course Italy, Canada, US and the UK). I was taught as a girl that there are things I shouldn't never do, so I guess as I didn't dare travel so far (it's sometimes so hard to overcome your own insecurities, especially the ones you were taught so strongly, a girl shouldn't do this or that) I did it by having worldwide friends, discovering new cultures and countries through them. & now, out of nowhere I've started last year, learning korean (I am 52), and I'm planning to come and visit next year for 3 weeks. I live daily surrounded by 🇰🇷 culture in 🇫🇷 (food, music, language, events, friends etc...). Anyways, thanks again for these beautiful videos of yours. They are really very inspiring. Until the next one, bye for now ☺️

I came to my birth country Korea with less than couple thousand dollars. I bought a home a car have a girl a job after living here for 9 years. I go out and have fun travel and vacation. Something I never really got to do in US. I get free healthcare. Now I’m saving up for retirement. Korea is great for many things but some can be tedious for young Koreans growing up here.

Korea started offering free meals to mid/high school students about 20 years ago and the main argument at the time was whether to introduce free meals to everyone or to only those who are less privileged. I thought the latter was a better and more logical option because, by making some portion of students pay for their meals, every student would enjoy better quality meals overall. The other side of argument was that it would embarrase and hurt the feelings of the sensitive teenagers who can't pay for their lunch. This argument won in the end and every student now get free meals regardless of income level and I now believe that was the right decision to make. It caused huge political debate and the decision had to be made by people's vote
@francoismarc33 ай бұрын
I think that was the right decision as well. Pressure and stress from peers can't be underestimated, especially at younger, impressionable ages. Now, all students can eat well and have the energy to learn without the fear of being bullied or called names. I really like that.

People expect something authentic and different to their own culture when traveling, like lots of westerner idealize curtain image of Japan or Korea. Then they want to move into the country and start to say you need to open up to different people and learn and respect the new comers’ way. So then where does the authenticity go? It will be just same as US or some European countries, called melting pot. Is that what everyone wants at the end?

Hi, Francois!! Another great video!! I have been up to Namsan Tower literally hundreds of times when I was living in Seoul many years ago. As someone who has also lived in the U.S. and is a U.S. citizen, I can understand and relate to everything what you have said in this video about the American Dream. Growing up in the 70s and all the way up to 2008 in the U.S., the American Dream was still alive and well as people could achieve all those wonderful things you mentioned in this video. However, that is no longer the case. The American Dream has become very difficult to achieve mainly due to the high cost of living. You have to make over a hundred thousand dollars a year just to qualify for a mortgage to buy an average home, which is a staggering 400 thousand dollars in Atlanta, Ga, which is where I am from. How can someone out of college make that kind of money? It's not just housing that is expensive. It's pretty much everything. Everything has gone up. I was in the U.S. a few months ago, I couldn't believe a slice of pizza at Sbarro cost over seven dollars. As for racism/hate crime and crimes in general, it's still bad in the U.S. I thought it has gotten better but as you know, America is still a dangerous country for pretty much everyone. With all the guns and mass shootings that are taking place almost every day, it's pretty terrifying. This is the biggest reason why I have been living in Korea since 2008. I have never once felt danger while I was living here when it comes to violent crime except for driving. Not once!! I wish I could say the same about the U.S.!! I don't see myself going back to the U.S. anytime soon. Not with all the toxic political division and polarization, corruption on every level in society, high cost of living, ridiculous high cost of medical care and education, homelessness, gun violence, racism, and much more. Korea is not a perfect country either but I feel relatively safe here and everything seems very organized and efficient with good infrastructure!! The cost of living can be expensive here too but you can tailor your budget around and live affordably, especially with renting and medical care, unlike the U.S.!! People can be unfriendly and rude in Korea too from time to time depending on people and people manipulate, lie, and commit fraud a lot here, especially the educated ones. So, plz be careful!! Also, Koreans are quite depressed, stressed, and angry about a lot of things. Road rage is pretty bad here. They clearly have a lot of personal, and societal pressure, relationship, economic, family, bullying, and other issues, but I deal with it as best I can by trying not to take it personally. Korea is a very hierarchical and structured country based on age, seniority, power, and money so people often get mistreated and bullied a lot if they do not have much power. Korean people are also very judgmental and shallow. Racism in Korea is pretty bad too especially if you are people of color. It is no secret Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world and the lowest birth rates in the world. There are a lot of dark sides in Korea that are hidden behind glitz and glamour on the surface. I don't want to go too deep here but you can see in their face. They are not happy at all, to be honest!! To sum up, I still love the U.S. but it just ain't the same anymore, and even though I intend to live in Korea for now, I may go back to the U.S. if the time and conditions are right. God, I miss the old days. Things were so much better and simpler in the old days. It does not matter where you live as long as the place meets your "needs" and you are happy there if this makes sense. Every country has good and bad!! There is no right or wrong country as far as I am concerned. You can be happy or depressed anywhere. It's totally up to you to make yourself happy and successful and of course, you need some luck as well. Life is what you make of it. Find out what your priorities and wants and just try out many things in life without fearing failure. You have to fail to learn, to grow, and to succeed. Do not let fear of failure from trying different things in life because eventually, that is how you succeed!! Keep learning, keep trying, and never never give up in life! You have to fight for it!! Lastly, Francois, can I ask if you work at a public school or a private language institute now and which do you prefer because I have done both for many years and I personally like private learning centers because they pay a little more with fewer students and they are more motivated to learn! Take care and thank you for making this great insightful video!!!!!

한국인을 잘 알려면 유교를(the Three Bonds and Five Relationships in Confucianism) 연구해 보면 이해가 됩니다.

@@skitakaujou Thank you and I agree with you too on pretty much everything that you have said especially about the societal pressure and expectations in Korea based on Confucian values. Korea is still a very conservative country where people have to act and behave according to what is culturally acceptable and not acceptable. Hence, it creates a lot of stress and anxiety!! That is why people are not happy here I think!!!! I can understand why though because this Confucian culture is deeply rooted in the minds of many here. Korea has five thousand years of rich history with homogenous people living in it. It is hard to escape from this reality. There are always good and bad sides to everything and Confucianism is no exception. Lastly, I think the low birth rate in Korea is probably the most serious problem that Korea faces today. This country will become extinct in the future if things do not change and it has to change right away. I want Korea to be around for many many years to come. Bye~

In my view, Korea is a nation that has dreamed of and achieved the American Dream, and now people from around the world seem to be coming to Korea, dreaming of and seeking their own Korean Dream. Even Americans are coming. The American Dream can certainly be realized here in Korea. Currently, South Korea is only half of its potential, but it's hard to predict what changes might occur with reunification. Even investors like Jim Rogers have expressed a willingness to invest their entire fortune in South Korea. I hope that someday your American Dream will come true in South Korea, and that you return to the United States to enjoy golden days.

I live in the East Coast, and have a son that is about to go to college. I am seriously considering to move to another country before I hit 60. I don't enjoy living in the states anymore. I am financially secure and don't have to work. I'm thinking about South Korea, Malaysia, Peru and Argentina. Any comments/recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hey there! If you have money, there is no better place than Korea. You will find there are aspects of Korean society that far surpass the US, least if all safety. If I were financially secure, I would choose Korea:)
@GHE-bv1pf3 ай бұрын
Unhappy people are going to be unhappy everywhere but if you leave the US to find life that works for you better, you might find that in Korea, or elsewhere. People who are escaping the US because they feel unhappy and don't do anything to better their life, they will probably be unhappy elsewhere, too.

I admit Korea is probably one of nicest place in the world to live, but it can't accommodate all the people who would want to come here if there was no border control. No matter how nice/talented the immigrants are Korea would soon lose its Koreanness if Korea duplicated something like what France did. Some of the best parts of Korea like the safety, cleanliness, civility are fragile qualities that a small number of bad apples could easily upset. It is far easier/quicker to destroy those qualities than to establish them. What the tipping point for how many more foreigners Korea can accept before losing it's best qualities is a question.

Racism in South Korea is bad too. Of course it depends on your race and whether you speak the language. Also the culture is tough. Air quality is poor you need a purifier, you need to bow all the time, Korean nationals have to join the army, alcoholism is on another level, suicide rates are ridiculously high.
